To not be impressed by Shepard's huts in gardens.

The sight of them is now giving me the rage. It feels like every garden in some areas has an elevated shed on wheels stuck in the corner. The early adopters sheds have a tatty bit of colour faded bunting attached.
No, I do not want to pay a premium to sleep in one on holiday. Cramped, ill thought out, not a quirky, cool, one-off experience.
YANBU Shepard's Huts are not impressive, they give me the rage too.
YABU Garden Shepard's Hut are adorable, get out the bunting, I'm envious.

I went looking after reading the thread and think they are a fab way to add a guest bedroom. I would happily camp in one in my garden and offer up my room. Much cheaper than paying for the mortgage on a bigger house.

Onestepup · 08/07/2020 08:51

Just call it a summerhouse or shed or whatever. 'Shepherd's Hut' sounds very pretentious and twee faux rustic (unless you actually are a shepherd, of course).

TheSoapyFrog · 08/07/2020 08:57

I had to Google them, but I like the look of them. If they weren't so expensive I'd probably get one.

bluebadgehelp101 · 08/07/2020 09:41

What is their life expectancy? £20k on a shed on wheels sounds like a very poor investment if it is going to fall apart within 20 years.

But it isn't a shed or a summerhouse - both those have a different shape. This style of "building" is a Shepherd's hut. You wouldn't call an old fashioned caravan a shed or summerhouse. Well, you might but it's still neither, it's a caravan 😂

If you look after them properly, indefinite.

In other words, even if this was true, a better investment than a car.

Not really fussed what people have in their own gardens, but as "luxury holiday let" type things YANBU. Had to wade through pages of them last time I was booking a little holiday. I can't believe what some people charge for a couple of nights in one.

Honeyroar · 08/07/2020 13:55

But lots of people obviously pay it..

It’s not really meant to be like a hotel or b&b/cottage. It’s more in the glamping market. If it’s one of the better huts in a quiet, secluded area with gorgeous countryside around it and if it’s not of the more luxurious versions that have an en suite bathroom, log burner and proper bed I can see the appeal. They’re much more luxurious than glamping pods..

Honeyroar · 08/07/2020 13:56

Sorry if it IS one of the more luxurious versions!

Movinghouseatlast · 08/07/2020 15:53

Mine is much more luxurious than a b and b ( or most) They get fluffy robes, pool towels, fire pit, their own private woodland...

Obviously you have to like that kind of thing, but it is more of an adventure I think.

If you look at listings carefully you can tell which ones are just in a suburban garden as opposed to in someones vast country garden and really are private.

They arent glorified sheds or summerhouses by the way.

Ishouldtryabiteachdayer · 08/07/2020 21:43

I'm more of yurt person Grin Anyway I'd say they are rebranded gypsy traditional caravans. They look cute, I imagine they are damp alas.

They're not rebranded they are/were a traditional thing. Less fancy than the old gypsy caravans.
Movinghouseatlast · 08/07/2020 22:12

Not damp! Ours is insulated.

Honeyroar · 08/07/2020 22:22

Most have little log burners in them, so can’t imagine they’d be damp.

CherryPavlova · 08/07/2020 22:34

No ours isn’t damp or cold. It has a wood burner for colder months and double doors onto a verandah for warmer times.

Onestepup · 08/07/2020 22:41

I think it's the marketing-speak which makes it seem a bit incongruous. The "luxury" ones do look nice, but I can't link "luxury" and accommodation for shepherds somehow. (Not that shepherds don't deserve luxury, of course!) I think if I had one, since I'm not a shepherd I would just call it... a hut Grin

Barney60 · 09/07/2020 15:39

TBH i had to google what these were. Love them, wish could afford one, very expensive. No idea what i would use one for. Why dont you like them, bar wheels which i assume are fake they are surely not much different to a summer house/posh shed, out of curiosity do they enrage you too?

5foot5 · 09/07/2020 15:46

We have returned home where we have trampolines in our gardens.

That sounds way more anti-social than an attractive little shed on wheels. All those annoying children squealing and bouncing up and down and peering over the fence in to neighbours gardens!

It just seems like a really weird thing to get wound up about. Who cares if there are lots of them and they are mostly inauthentic? I wouldn't own one (can't afford to!) but would quite like to stay in one sometime. I looked around one at a Country Fair (£36K!) and though it looked lovely and cosy. My sisters stayed in one for a night and enjoyed it.

ArfArfBarf · 09/07/2020 15:47

Prob don't need planning permission

This.

BringPizza · 09/07/2020 16:10

I've stayed in one as an alternative to lugging and hoisting the tent, it was very basic but it did the trick. I'm not into the whole bunting and chintzy Cath Kidston thing, but I don't like it anywhere else either.

Chilledchablis · 09/07/2020 19:55

My DH suggested we have one in the orchard of our holiday cottage, which we do let out for holidays and I said a resounding NO. For a start it would ruin the privacy for our guests, and us when we get the chance to stay quite infrequently. They are hugely expensive for what they are and I don't fancy spending my holidays in one. It's like posh camping and I won't be doing that anytime soon either!

CherryPavlova · 09/07/2020 22:14

Ours needed planning because we’d put on the lavatory and wet room.
The wheels are genuine; it was pulled from a low loader across to the orchard by a discovery.

Wrenna · 09/07/2020 22:17

You mean Tiny Houses? YABU I love them!
