To not be impressed by Shepard's huts in gardens.

The sight of them is now giving me the rage. It feels like every garden in some areas has an elevated shed on wheels stuck in the corner. The early adopters sheds have a tatty bit of colour faded bunting attached.
No, I do not want to pay a premium to sleep in one on holiday. Cramped, ill thought out, not a quirky, cool, one-off experience.
YANBU Shepard's Huts are not impressive, they give me the rage too.
YABU Garden Shepard's Hut are adorable, get out the bunting, I'm envious.

I have no strong feelings about shepherd huts. I do, however, have a helpful suggestion about remembering how to spell them. ShepHERDS are so called because they HERD sheep.

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2020 22:56

Oh, and just to be clear, the shepherd does not sleep in it because he has his own perfectly nice 3-bed house much nearer the lambing pens.

Honeyroar · 06/07/2020 22:56

They had some on display at Badminton horse trials w couple of years ago. They were absolutely gorgeous and had an en suite bathroom with large shower too. I’d have a couple to let out like a shot if we could afford it. (we have acres of land and open countryside views).

Beachcomber74 · 06/07/2020 23:34

Ours has been a life saver in lockdown DH & DS have worked in there & it’s given us more room in our tiny house. We absolutely love it & got it delivered flat packed which saved cost wise. Can’t believe it offends you?!

PickAChew · 07/07/2020 00:33

@SunshineSuper

I'm going to give up on the spelling, I'm so mildly annoyed I just can't concentrate and between the multiple autocorrect options can no longer find the right answer.

Dp's parents are in Dorchester, honestly the gardens are full of them. Didn't see any sheep.

Autocorrect isn't infallible because it takes your own persistent misspellings as gospel.
KisstheTeapot14 · 07/07/2020 17:27

If it smells of sheep and has a real shepherd in it, I'm saying YABU.

If it smells of bull*shit and has David Cameron in it, I'm voting YANBU.

Hope that resolves things for you OP.

Pipandmum · 07/07/2020 17:41

I love them! Mind you, I don't know anyone who has one, but they look great.

simiisme · 07/07/2020 18:13

I think that they look lovely and cosy. It would be quite a romantic break for two to stay in one and better than a tent.
I do agree that they are expensive to buy and rent for what they are.
Surprised that so many people haven't heard of them, but Google is our friend.

FelicisNox · 07/07/2020 18:18

Christ no.... I need running water and a proper bed, not this gypsy/shepherd's water closet crap and that goes triple for camping.

Hotel or nothing.

EvilPea · 07/07/2020 18:19

I know someone who has one that is used .... as a shepherds hut for lambing.

MacBlank · 07/07/2020 18:25

YABU

no one is forcing you to stay in a glorified shednon wheels.

So why all the fuss.

I hate for very personal reasons sprouts, but I don't write a fecking post asking if I'm being unreasonable, never wanting to see a fucking sprout at Christmas again.

Get a life

OP- I am so glad that you have enjoyed your time in Dorset so much that you feel the need to come home and moan about shepherds huts.

  1. Dorset is an agricultural area and has a rich history of sheep farming.

  2. Shepherds huts are non longer used as accommodation for shepherds and sadly many shepherd's huts were just being left to rot in fields. Its fab to see them being restored and used.

  3. I am rolling my eyes at the irony of a holiday maker complaining about how others holiday.

Rachand23 · 07/07/2020 18:34

Just Upmarket camping - no thanks! Share your views OP

rachmultiplemum · 07/07/2020 18:40

Just noticed you stayed near Dorchester... there are not that many shepherds huts here... also did you walk around with your eyes shut? This area is full of sheep farms.. mine included

sanityisamyth · 07/07/2020 19:09

[quote nauticant]Some prices:

There's one of those at my local NT place which is used as a coffee shop. It's fab!

YABU. The father of a friend of mine makes shepherd's huts. They're beautiful.

derxa · 07/07/2020 19:24

I'm with you OP. I'm a sheep farmer and can't be doing with such wankery. Our shepherdess goes hill lambing and takes her caravan stocked up with pot noodles. In my 'garden I have a lamb feeder and a make shift rat trap (the rat runs up a ramp and then falls into a barrell.)

Leflic · 07/07/2020 19:31

Twatty. Popular because camper vans are now just for old people.

Also yurts, great for Mongolians ( although I’m sure some would trade for a bricks and mortar job) but expensive way to be claustrophobic otherwise,

Ahardyfool · 07/07/2020 19:31

YABU

We have one (now dismantled ready to be refurbished) which we bought on the cheap when DD came back to live with us after she’d moved to her dads to see what it was like living with him and then returned after she developed anorexia. Due to the circumstances, and urgency (we did not have a decent room for her to stay in while very ill and this was a little project for her as she designed the interior as part of her recovery) we actually crowdfunded about 20% of the purchase price. We were really desperate at the time and lovely, lovely friends of ours chipped in as well as my mother. DD is now recovered and made use of the hut as her sanctuary. She even did a mood board of the interior which she then used at art college interviews so that was another special added bonus of it all.

So, for us, they are beautiful in so many ways and I will always love them. They have history and they are so cosy to stay in. We stayed once as a family holiday in the Lake District in a ‘Herdy Hut’ away from mobile reception and just cooked and walked and made hot chocolate And marshmallows at bedtime on the wood burner. Special family times.

Todaywewilldobetter · 07/07/2020 19:34

I don't think I'd given them any thought at all until I read this!

YoTeQuieroInfinito · 07/07/2020 19:38

I just don't understand this thing of calling things other people like but you don't "twatty" and "wanky".

Toomuchtrouble4me · 07/07/2020 19:41

Never heard of them. Why do these things bother you if they are in another persons garden?

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/07/2020 19:43

Improved if David Cameron isn't inside.

Irre247 · 07/07/2020 19:47

Stayed in a lovely one in the Peak District in a village called Eyam. Absolutely loved it. Perfect for a 2 night stay, much nicer than a b&b where you can hear the neighbours shagging Confused. Lovely to have no tv, just books and each other for company.

Does that make me a wanker? Who cares Grin

Serin · 07/07/2020 19:47

Shepherd's huts are so 2015 though.

These days it's all about the massive "Man cave". With outdoor TV, full bar facilities and DJ decks. Grin
