To not be impressed by Shepard's huts in gardens.

The sight of them is now giving me the rage. It feels like every garden in some areas has an elevated shed on wheels stuck in the corner. The early adopters sheds have a tatty bit of colour faded bunting attached.
No, I do not want to pay a premium to sleep in one on holiday. Cramped, ill thought out, not a quirky, cool, one-off experience.
YANBU Shepard's Huts are not impressive, they give me the rage too.
YABU Garden Shepard's Hut are adorable, get out the bunting, I'm envious.

I've never seen them in private gardens but agree that the cost to stay overnight in one (and other associated camping / glamping pod type things) is eyewatering when you consider it's basically a glorified shed that you still have to trek across a field to use a shared bathroom.

RoseMartha · 06/07/2020 13:20

I think they are quirky and lovely. I have never seen one in a garden though only as a short break option.

However the gardens near me are cramped by the time they have a small shed, a medium trampoline and a washing line, so perhaps i dont live in the right area to see them in peoples gardens.

Being someone who shortly will not have a garden at all, I would love to stay in one.

Have done so in the past and we had a great time.

3cats · 06/07/2020 13:21

I don't get your problem, OP? Where does the person who tends your sheep sleep if you don't have a shepherd's hut?

Madcats · 06/07/2020 13:22

DD(13) loves them, possibly because she never had a Wendy house. We're off to stay in a brand new one on a farm in the middle of nowhere for a couple of nights next week. We'd thought about renting somewhere on the coast, as we are desperate for a swim, but all those news articles about the hoards cramped on beaches and leaving their rubbish everywhere put us off.

After having camped far too many times in the pouring rain and cold, a shepherds hut (or a safari tent plumbed in and a woodburner) this is my middle-aged compromise.

Yes there do seem to be a lot of yurts and things in suburban gardens on Airbnb, next to the owners' patio, I'll give you that.

1forAll74 · 06/07/2020 13:25

It's a new trend, and aptly named, as many people will follow anything new,and are sheep like.

BlindAssassin1 · 06/07/2020 13:26

Shabby chic shed, yes?

I wouldn't want to stay in one and looks too drafty for an office.

They cost the same as a decent house deposit! TBF though it's all trampolines and washing lines around here too, maybe not the target market.

TrickyKid · 06/07/2020 13:29

Wasn't aware this was a thing. I haven't seen them in gardens. Just Googled, they look ok but wouldn't but one myself.

TooDamnSarky · 06/07/2020 13:30

Never share a shepherds hut with someone who snores.

Worst 3 nights sleep of my life - the bed was right up near the ceiling so the sound echoed straight back down to me with nowhere to escape. Truly hideous.

LadyPrigsbottom · 06/07/2020 13:33

They definitely don't make me ragey, but I wouldn't put one in my garden and I definitely wouldn't pay what some people charge to sleep in one for a holiday. I do think they look cute, but if I'm going to pay a lot of money for a holiday, my policy is that, (unless it is for sightseeing and we won't be spending any time at all in accommodation, other than sleeping), if the accommodation isn't as nice as my house, I'm not going! And something without running water(?), a loo inside and floor to walk across wouldn't be for me. I also hate camping, (although I'm a fairly experienced camper, former Scout leader yada yada).

CeibaTree · 06/07/2020 13:33

I don't really understand your annoyance - are you just annoyed by them in general or annoyed by people hiring them out as holiday rentals?

Mamette · 06/07/2020 13:36

Just googled, they look cute but when did we start calling them shepherds’ huts?

lakeswimmer · 06/07/2020 13:38

If you don't want to stay in one then don't. Presumably some people do which is why they're offered as holiday accommodation...Some people may actually use them for shepherding. I've seen both uses in my area.

as someone was saying upthread, David Cameron has two....

....brain cells which occasionally manage to collide without communicating with each other.

TheAirbender · 06/07/2020 13:38

Is this the same as a Garden Room? We’re putting one in our garden for home-working, presume many more people will be doing the same soon in future. That’ll really bug you OP.

ChickenDrumstick · 06/07/2020 13:39

They’re lovely and they aren’t a new trend, they’ve been around for ages.

Don’t get why it bothered you, if you don’t like them, just don’t have one!

yetanothernamechange22 · 06/07/2020 13:39

"The rage" is a phrase I only ever see on Mumsnet, and usually over the most ridiculous things, like here.

randomer · 06/07/2020 13:39

I have a couple next to the Orangery and to the left of the paddock.

LittlePearl · 06/07/2020 13:39

We're hoping to get one and I'm so excited.

We wanted a garden room but you can get Shepherd Hut self build kits which will save a lot of money and give us somewhere to sleep when all our family gather.

Looks like you don't need planning permission either (though we're currently just checking this) which makes life easier.

I hope to use it as a little snug / retreat / cosy space to read, think and write. I think they're lovely, though I wouldn't pay a lot to stay in one for a holiday.

Blueuggboots · 06/07/2020 13:40

I think the DP means people who use them as a space to rent out on platforms like Airbnb not using them in their private garden? That's how I read it anyway.

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 13:40

I dont understand why they make you angry. Nobody is making you own one or live in one and how does it affect you in any way if other people want to own them or go on holiday in them?

I think they're cute and if i didnt have kids i probably would like to stay in one. A bit more interesting than a caravan.

SonjaMorgan · 06/07/2020 13:40

I want one with a lock so I can hide from DH and DC at the bottom of the garden. They are just fashionable sheds or summerhouses.

NotShiny · 06/07/2020 13:40

I absolutely adore them. Wish I had one.

dellacucina · 06/07/2020 13:40

If I had a garden, I would absolutely get one. Bloody tiny English houses with no storage.
