To not be impressed by Shepard's huts in gardens.

The sight of them is now giving me the rage. It feels like every garden in some areas has an elevated shed on wheels stuck in the corner. The early adopters sheds have a tatty bit of colour faded bunting attached.
No, I do not want to pay a premium to sleep in one on holiday. Cramped, ill thought out, not a quirky, cool, one-off experience.
YANBU Shepard's Huts are not impressive, they give me the rage too.
YABU Garden Shepard's Hut are adorable, get out the bunting, I'm envious.

Why would I “have the rage” about something that has zero impact on me?

Bluntness100 · 06/07/2020 17:03

It’s interesting you mention price, F&b paint etc, are you sure this isn’t about something as simple as envy op, that you can’t afford them and they can. Even if if you had a spare fifteen grand you’d not use it for that?

LolaSmiles · 06/07/2020 17:12

The more I read your updates, the less I think it's an issue of jealousy (and I really do hate the suggestion that if anyone criticises or dislikes something expensive they must be jealous).

It sounds to me OP that you dislike the attitude and actions of people splashing cash to try and present a 'ooh look at us we're so quirky' image. YABU for it to give you the rage though.

You're right about the caravan park snobbery though. It reminds me of middle class/affluent parents who spend lots of money having their children dressed in mismatched Boden/Kite/Duns/Frugi clothing but then look down their noses at the working class children who don't look polished because everyone is meant to notice that the middle class children have the 'making memories' look, whilst obviously the poorer children must just be poor.
Or the people who spend a fortune buying endless expensive eco items (eg branded water bottles, new steel or bamboo lunch boxes etc) instead of using the containers they already have which would be the genuinely more sustainable thing to do.

popsydoodle4444 · 06/07/2020 17:13

My friends have a beautiful vintage bow top caravan that was gifted to them in their garden.

I'm very envious as it's absolutely stunning and cosy inside

D0veDay8390 · 06/07/2020 17:14

Stayed in one in Dorset a couple of years ago in the summer
Slept well
Saw shooting stars
A weekend to remember

However, it would not have been so much fun in the rain !

"An elderflower cordial business" Grin

Can I have your thoughts on treehouses OP? Please?

SunshineSuper · 06/07/2020 19:16

I approve of site specific treehouses Boireannachlaidir Grin we have a big platform 2m up to catch the last bit of afternoon sun.

I did have a little rant about the 'treehouse' at the Chelsea Flower Show - £200,000, had underfloor heating along with a slide. No trees necessary!!! It felt a little bit Versailles.

I am hust having one built, it will be rented out for holidays. Nobody can see it as it is in a little wood at the bottom of our garden.

We had to get planning permission and we only got it because ir cant be seen.

I hope that people will love staying in it! It is small obviiusly, but will have underfloor heating, a woodburning stove and a hot tub. I think people like them ss it is a way of getting back to nature.

SunshineSuper · 06/07/2020 19:27

I'm sure it will be lovely Movinghouseatlast, ignore me. I've been on my best behaviour with my rather snobby in-laws and fancied a rant about something of no consequence.
Out of interest how long do you think it will take to start making a profit?

Rhubardandcustard · 06/07/2020 19:35

I love them. Stayed in a lovely one in Devon. Would love to be able to afford one in my garden - but don’t really have the money or space.

DateLoaf · 06/07/2020 19:35

are these not just static caravans?

Alsohuman · 06/07/2020 19:40

Yeah because nature’s renowned for its wood burning stoves, underfloor heating and hot tubs. 🙄

orangesandapplesandpearsohmy · 06/07/2020 19:51

I LOVE them on a campsite as an alternative to being in a tent, so much less hassle, comfy and warm.
I could give a monkeys about people wanting to put them i gardens.

Kirschcherry · 06/07/2020 19:58

Well, I have one in my field next to my house. My DH bought the chassis and built the rest himself. I think it’s pretty and as a family we have really enjoyed it so I think yabu.

Kirschcherry · 06/07/2020 20:04

Ps. We use it when the sheep are lambing if that helps...

CherryPavlova · 06/07/2020 20:06

We have one. I wouldn’t go on holiday in one as it would be far too small. Ours is a renovated one, so not ‘arty’ or bohemian.
It’s an office space with WiFi, in the orchard where my husband can escape to work without stopping me from working by asking endless questions when I want to focus.

It has a sofabed, so we can put someone there if it’s a houseful but only to sleep. There is a lavatory and shower extension on the side, so comfortable but basic. Fine for a single person for a night or the children fancying a romantic camp out. Not fine for longer term use or strangers holidays.

LovingLen · 06/07/2020 20:08

Do they have toilets and showers in them like touring caravans because they look a similar size or do they have their own plumbing and waste like on a static caravan site

CherryPavlova · 06/07/2020 20:23

We had a separate lavatory and wet room built on at the side. It’s tiny, only about 12x12 but big enough to shower. It’s got its own drainage and water supply but is basically a square shed on stilts.
Movinghouseatlast · 06/07/2020 21:33

@Alsohuman I knew someone would say that. Most people don't really want to get back to nature as in no toilet or heating, but they do want to spend time in a field, looking at the stars and listening to owls.

Movinghouseatlast · 06/07/2020 21:33

We have a proper toilet and shower in the hut.

Movinghouseatlast · 06/07/2020 21:35

@SunshineSuper it will take about 16 months to be in profit.

As long as we dont lock down again that is...

BabyLlamaZen · 06/07/2020 21:38

How on earth can this annoy you op?

Hydrate · 06/07/2020 22:43

Very handy especially during the pandemic, for sheltering people who need a safe place to live.

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2020 22:46

Well, mine is adorable. But no one gets to sleep in it. Garden office/art studio/craft room. It was cheaper than getting a normal garden office built and looks so much nicer.

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2020 22:50

Also,

  1. I've had it 8 years,
  2. It did not cost £18k. It was half that,
  3. It was not about making any statement. House is a tiny 1-bed barn conversion, with no chance of getting permission to extend. I needed more room. This was the best option.
  4. I don't care whether you're impressed or not. I didn't get it to impress you or anyone else.
