To not be impressed by Shepard's huts in gardens.

The sight of them is now giving me the rage. It feels like every garden in some areas has an elevated shed on wheels stuck in the corner. The early adopters sheds have a tatty bit of colour faded bunting attached.
No, I do not want to pay a premium to sleep in one on holiday. Cramped, ill thought out, not a quirky, cool, one-off experience.
YANBU Shepard's Huts are not impressive, they give me the rage too.
YABU Garden Shepard's Hut are adorable, get out the bunting, I'm envious.

@yetanothernamechange22

"The rage" is a phrase I only ever see on Mumsnet, and usually over the most ridiculous things, like here.
I think this might be to do with when posters went to school. I only say this, because this phrase was used a lot when I was at school in the late nineties / early noughties. It was usually only used for things which people wouldn't fell genuine rage over, as a wee joke.
Loveinatimeofcovid · 06/07/2020 13:41

They’re quite passé.

Beatrixpotterspencil · 06/07/2020 13:41

for those who don't know what these huts are - by now you should have come to the conclusion that literally ANYTHING that once smacked of serfdom and peasantry is considered to die for with the upper middle classes.

its just a rustic chaaaarm thing, darling.

SunshineSuper · 06/07/2020 13:42

Well IABU to have spelt it wrong - Sheperd's huts give me the rage.

Just got back from visiting in laws in Dorset. They are surrounded by them. One looked very spidery and the shine had come off the paintwork.
Another neighbour has one up on Air BNB for an absolute fortune per night. The photos are very clever and disguise the adjacent oil tank and A road!

Friend of a friend bought one, it was moved into position like a dog with worms, with the wheels rubbing on the chassis, one of their kids promptly fell off the steps and had to go to hospital.

All the time, I feel they are no longer a niche, cute oddity they have become bloated, over priced and so far away from ever seeing a sheep to have become the shed equivalent of stone cladding on a Victorian brick terrace.

The first time I saw one was in the early 90s, and it is actually a genuine old one that a farmer was going to chuck out and had been rescued and restored by the guy whose garden it was in.

He did it initially just because he fancied it as a project, but his children loved playing in it, it became a den when they were teens and by the time his youngest left home they had grandchildren, so they hung on to it.

I was very taken by it, and have loved them ever since, but I'm a bit pissed off that they've been "adopted" by the Cath Kidston and Lacanche cooker brigade.

I'd rather have a proper gipsy bowtop though. And a horse to pull it!

Beatrixpotterspencil · 06/07/2020 13:43

....or lower middles, just any old husbands money, I WANT A HUT, then later I can reject it for being coveted by people 'beneath' me.

DearTeddyRobinson · 06/07/2020 13:44
  1. It's 'shepherd'
  2. It's not obligatory to stay in one
  3. Different people like different things. Personally I'd prefer a decent hotel! But others love these different, faux-quirky 'experiences'.

ThanosSavedMe · 06/07/2020 13:45

Then don’t get one. Why should anyone else having one bother you?

Beatrixpotterspencil · 06/07/2020 13:46

sorry guys but on a serious note I always wonder why neighbours bought into the same shitty trends like this, rustled up words like 'charming' 'rustic' etc to let rest of neighbourhood know they're in danger of FOMO.

Llamazoom · 06/07/2020 13:47

I like them, a friends husband earns a fortune making them.

TeaAndBrie · 06/07/2020 13:47

We stayed in one via air bnb in someone's garden. It was more of a log cabin and their garden was huge so it didn't feel like we were too close.

Sparklesocks · 06/07/2020 13:47

I don’t really have strong feelings about them either way, I hadn’t realised they were so divisive!

Sunbird24 · 06/07/2020 13:47

I stayed in one in Norfolk for a really hot BH weekend a couple of years ago, it was new and really well set up, and had its own little mini shepherd’s hut right next to it with a lovely clean modern shower, toilet etc in, no sharing required! It was a fab solo getaway, really relaxing. Think it was about £50 a night and the owners left me eggs from their hens, biscuits, milk, tea & coffee etc. I’d definitely go there again

jessstan2 · 06/07/2020 13:49

I've never seen one in my life, I'll google now.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/07/2020 13:49

@Pelleas

I haven't heard of them. How are they different from garden sheds?
They have wheels.
LovingLen · 06/07/2020 13:50

I thought they were just summer houses not something you rent out or holiday in.

jessstan2 · 06/07/2020 13:53

Shepherds huts:

They look alright to me for the back garden if there is room, no different to a prefabricated building which many people have and these huts can be moved more easily.

I didn't realise they were a 'thing' but can imagine youngsters would like making a little 'house' in one.

The only time I think they would really look out of place would be in a tiny back yard.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 06/07/2020 13:53

giving me the rage

Really?

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that you would use this phrasing after your constant misspelling of shepherd.

PickAChew · 06/07/2020 13:55

Never heard of them. Your neighbours are obviously very different from mine.

SunshineSuper · 06/07/2020 13:56

Apologies for the spelling and the rogue apostrophe, I work with a Shepard who has a lovely garden with a shed firmly on the ground.

BackforGood · 06/07/2020 13:56

I haven't voted in your poll, as neither applies, but YABVU to be so worked up about what other people spend their money on.

I'd have thought with more people working from home, then some kind of home office / garden room / studio is going to be helpful to a lot of families - or as a play room if a room inside has been commandeered by the home worker. It people want to choose to spend their money on one that looks in a particular style, I genuinely can't see why it would bother anyone else Confused

AlpineBell · 06/07/2020 13:59

It looks like a trendy caravan. I like caravans a lot so would probably like them

SunshineSuper · 06/07/2020 13:59

How does one express mild incomprehension at other people's lifestyle decisions. What is the 2020 term for ' gives me the rage' .

OP posts:
LolaSmiles · 06/07/2020 14:00

I've only ever seen them at glamping type businesses.
They'd make a nice little studio/office/summer house in the garden though.

My neighbours must be very different to yours though as I've never seen one in a domestic garden.
