To expect missing salary to be paid immediately?

Mistake made withy salary last month resulting in me being underpaid by a couple of hundred pounds. Raised issue immediately and it's taken 2 weeks to get a response saying sorry we made a mistake but you'll get it in your next salary payment.

I won't run out or be short but AIBU to expect to be paid the money that is owed immediately rather than have to wait a month?

YANBU! My work totally screwed my pay when on maternity leave. I should have received around £2k and I got about £300. Quick phone call and bank transfer about 2 days later.

YANBU. I expect they'll be able to do a manual payment at a small cost to them. I'd push for this as it was their mistake.

Dp's work did this to us a couple of years ago. They paid him £50 a week for 6 weeks in a row it was awful and took him going to the union and the overall manager to get it sorted. They still refused to immediately bank transfer it and we had to wait for it to go in on a normal payday.

Honestly in the grand scheme of things I would let this go.

Millions of people are losing their jobs at the moment. Big picture, this is really really small fry.

If it would cause you issues with paying your bills I can understand you making a big deal out of it, but as it won't, why does it really matter?

It depends, running the payroll is really complicated at the moment with furlough, really high sickness, running it all from home on a laptop and millions of requests from staff. There are bound to be delays.

When this happens at my workplace Finance/Payroll always try to do this and suggest it going in the next pay. We've all learnt to be pretty blunt and say no, we've done the work and you need to pay it asap.

Probably a bit easier for us as they are based in a different city so it's not like we're gonna have awkward run ins with them

If you don’t need the money then it seems like a weird thing to get stroppy about. You’ve already waited 2 weeks, just wait 2 more.

If you needed the money urgently then that’s a different story and you should have been chasing regularly from the moment you saw the amount, you’d have probably got it by now.

Yanbu op. Happened to me recently. Paid incorrectly on the Friday, I think I had the top up on the Tuesday. They were great.

Making sure people are paid correctly should be right every single month and immediately rectified if messed up!

Mine made a mistake when I first started -it was corrected in 24 hours. Of course, complain and say your mortgage and bills are paid -why wouldn't you?

An old workplace once didn’t pay me at all, I immediately followed up with them at 8am as soon as they were in the office and was told that I’d have to wait 3-5 working days.
I had bills going out the next day and couldn’t afford to wait so I made a major complaint to my manager who got someone to go to the bank and make an immediate payment to my account.
Just be firm and say you want the money you’re owed.

Damn right, I expect a chaps payment if any underpayment! I check everything like that religiously.

Is it NHS? I've been underpaid a few times and I've always had to wait until the next pay day to get the extra money.

i think if you are not paid, then yes you should get an advance asap.

but missing off a pay rise? that can be backdated and all paid next month

they don;t generally re-run payroll for mistakes, just give an advance and sort it in next months payslip (to work out tax and ni correctly)

It’s a difficult time for everyone. Payrolls are under huge pressure with additinal requirements and either trying to do huge files at home on a laptop or people coming in but then staff shortages due to shielding. CHAPS process to pay you immediately is manual so I can see why they would avoid if they can. I’d cooperate if you can afford it

I've been the payroll manager and these mistakes do cause a headache if we have to adjust and make an extra payment (often it's due to information not being recorded in the system correctly by department heads). I would always ask if the next payroll date is acceptable, and if it isn't then do a next day payment. It's definitely not the employee's fault that they weren't paid the right amount.

In theory it should be immediate but depending on how they make payments, it make take longer for them to get it put through the accountants and approved than it would take to get it as part of your next pay package.

I had this problem. It messed up my tax, pension and NI for months. Work 'forgot' to pay me for a days work. They transferred it to me 2 days later. Then my next wage they had added the extra in and taken it back out as a 'loan' and then did the same for the following 3 months. So because I was earning more I paid more tax, NI and pension 🙄🙄

It would be difficult for most payroll companies to pay this outside of the usual pay run. Of course, if it left you short, I'd expect the company to "sub" you and reclaim it when they make the actual salary payment but it would be very unusual for large employer to correct the actual pay before the next payday and you've said you don't need the advance.

A mistake was made that doesn't impact you in any material way and will be corrected in due course. Have you never made a mistake?

Tell them you’ll suffer severe financial hardship if you have to wait until next payday and request an immediate back transfer.
Should hit your account in 3 working days.
We do this all the time, even when it’s the employee’s fault.

I'd think regardless of the payroll system being used, a one off bank transfer can and should be made in these circumstances. I know payroll is more complex at the moment, but incorrect pay is incorrect pay and is the company's responsibility to resolve. You definitely need to ask for clarity on whether this will impact on tax (and knock on effect to any benefits you may receive).
