AIBU?

To expect missing salary to be paid immediately?

Mistake made withy salary last month resulting in me being underpaid by a couple of hundred pounds. Raised issue immediately and it's taken 2 weeks to get a response saying sorry we made a mistake but you'll get it in your next salary payment.

I won't run out or be short but AIBU to expect to be paid the money that is owed immediately rather than have to wait a month?
@Hingeandbracket how else would you do it? (Genuine question). A re-run is expensive, Isn’t an advance normal?
I don't know your setup - but I assume from what you say about a re-run being expensive that your organisation has outsourced payroll?
Most payroll systems will allow you to do additional runs for one or more workers really easily - but if your organisation outsourced the whole process and signed up to a deal making off cycle/supplementary runs expensive then they signed up to a really bad deal.
Any major Payroll system designed and delivered in the last 20 years can do an extra run and calculate the tax and NI all day long.

Our payroll team won’t make a manual payment unless you’re in dire financial straits because they have no way of taking off tax/NI/pension etc

They're having you on. They can do a post-run adjustment, unless they're using a crap payroll system. Even if they are running a crap system, they should still be able to calculate it manually and pay the difference between the two net figures.

Exactly - plenty of organisations do this all the time.
You have a crap outsourcing deal or a crap payroll system.

Hey when did I say I agreed with them? Yes we do have a crap payroll system and yes they probably were stupidly cheap compared to other payroll companies. We used to have a supplementary payrun about a week after payday to correct issues but now the only way you go on the supplementary payrun is if you haven’t been paid at all. I think it’s a load of shit and have said so many times before but the powers that be don’t see fit to consult with those of us who actually are involved in fixing pay issues - they just see cost savings.

You didn't - and no-one accused you of it.

Atleast you're chasing it... I'm pretty sure DH was underpaid this month and he isn't even going to check Angry

I'm amazed how many people never check their pay.

A few years ago, a colleague asked me to check her payslip, because she thought they may have deducted too much for a period of unpaid sick leave.

They hadn't, but I did spot she was on a BR code, because of a very brief spell of self-employment before she joined us. I got her to ring HMRC, who issued the correct code within a few days, and she got a huge tax refund - a few thousand.

She was delighted, and bought me a big bouquet. Grin

I'm a contractor and my pay were messed up last week as I'd taken a days holiday. Holiday still gets payed at same rate etc but processed slightly differently. I wasn't paid it. I complained politely on Thu and the rest of the payment was in my account on Fri. It can be done, you just need to be firm. They are trying to bundle it in with next payroll, rather than take on board the cost of correcting it sooner.

When I worked at the nhs they were notorious for doing this, always refused to do out of cycle salary adjustments. They should if you ask though.

YANBU they can make a manual payment if they want to

It is a fallacy that’s it’s hard to make a manual payment.

I always offer whoever has been affected the choice of an immediate approximate net payment, or a correct one the following month. I explain the tax implications and let them decide.

This is EASY. Anyone who says otherwise is obstructive.

@LakieLady

My DH has been on BR for around 5 years when we met. He’d not had a P45 and instead of getting him to complete a P46 and putting him on W1-M1 they put him on BR. I made him complete the reclaim forms there and then.

He was convinced I was wrong.

Until £6k arrived in the post a few weeks later.

Processing payroll is an absolute nightmare for me at the moment - part furlough / part working, on furlough but took holidays on full pay, on furlough for bank holidays that need to be topped up to full pay, some people not eligible for furlough but on reduced hours and pay etc etc. Main problem is the correct details aren't getting through to me via management and as I had to work from home for most of the time since March I was relying on bloomin emails.
If the mistake is small (missing one day bank holidays top up for example) I have asked if they can wait until next pay day but if it is over £50 or is causing financial issues for the employee I roll back and re-run a corrected payroll.
I would cut them a bit of slack for making a mistake at the moment though but yes ask for it to be corrected before next month if you need it x

I think it is a bit of a farce that I've not even been asked whether I needed it sooner in all honesty.

I've had to replace a large appliance this month, am doing some renovations to my property and was told that I will receive it with July's salary payment with no regard for personal circumstances. It is only me so it's not like there are two salaries coming in.

Of course it can be hard to make a manual payment

Working out the amount to pay may be fairly easy (taking off a rough amount for tax and ni)

But getting an actual payment made is usually a well controlled process, involving 2 approvers for example and maybe only done at certain times.
Very few people will have access to the bank account,

If its taken you below minimum wage for the time worked they could be breaking the law. Acas may be able to advise further.
