Is anyone else boycotting Tesco's for giving £80,000 to Mermaids?

Just that really... I was shocked, especially given all the news coverage there has been about the issues recently. I would have expected them to give it to an uncontroversial charity at the very least - and ideally one that most of their customers would like to support

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 05/07/2020 21:16

Yes, I am.

Mermaids needs a whole lot of sunlight cast on it.

malloo · 05/07/2020 21:17

I too thought Memaids sounded good, supporting trans kids who must find growing up really difficult. But that was before I found out what agenda they were actually pushing and I'm very very worried by it. Don't live near a Tesco but would boycott it if I did. I recommend www.transgendertrend.com/ for a clear and evidence based look at the facts to anyone who like me thinks that transgender people need support and protection and not to have their lives and futures damaged by groups like Mermaids.

PotholeParadise · 05/07/2020 21:17

A long time ago, I remember someone who identified as non-binary telling me that another trans* identifying person had told them that they couldn't be non-binary and must really be on the masculine side of things. Why? Because my friend enjoyed driving powerful cars.

feetfreckles · 05/07/2020 21:20

You keep saying you could quote a transphobic post, yet you haven't

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 05/07/2020 21:20

Tbh I already dislike Tesco for a number of reasons so can just add this to the pile!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/07/2020 21:23

Yes
If I ever visit the UK again, I won't buy anything from Tesco

MouthBreathingRage · 05/07/2020 21:23

Yes, I am, and yes I could.

Could you, or can you just point out the things you happen to disagree with? There's a lot of shouting 'transphobic!!' from people just not liking what others have said, and their usual response is to say 'well I could tell you what horrible, offensive thing you said but you'd just disagree (or actually make a factual point which is also v bad)'.

whiteroseredrose · 05/07/2020 21:26

I would. But I don't shop there

fruitbrewhaha · 05/07/2020 21:26

So this is copied from Mermaids site, it's the toolkit delivered in training at school.

"The trans pupil or student may benefit from social rules or scripts around what is socially acceptable and what is not e.g. what it is OK or not OK to say or do in different contexts. It may be that some of these rules or expectations are different for different genders socially, and some things that had to be taught to the young person originally e.g. the unwritten rules of using public toilets, may need to be taught again to help the pupil learn to socialise in their affirmed (rather than assigned) gender."

What a load of sexist crap. Which also contradicts the whole ideology. Sophie would rather be Jake, because she feels more a boy than a girl, so now we have to teach her "how to be a boy", so don't worry if the other boys take the piss out of you, it's normal, it's banter. But surely Jake know this, because he's always been a boy. If being a boy is so innate why do you need to be told?

Noo. Im gender critical but some shit is starting to wear bloody thin.

-Those using the GC tag to try and excuse outright bigotry and hatred of trans people,

-Those who think right wing bellends who hate trans people purely because they hate any difference and radical feminists are some sort of kindred spirits ('radical feminists' dramatically posting their joining of the tory party, the party of Christopher 'upskirt' Chope and Phillip Davies who have spent a decade attacking women economically on twitter),

-The posting of preloaded stuff like this, just so people can have a pile on to any dissenter,

-the insane paranoia,

-thinking these sorts of empty gestures will do anything.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/07/2020 21:27

"there's no point as people won't see it even if it's pointed out?

Maybe because some consider it "transphobic" to say that a transwoman cannot ever be a woman
Biological fact though

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/07/2020 21:27

Transgender children need support based on medical science not on ideology. Puberty blockers are not a neutral option as the NHS now recognised. Mermaids were advocating puberty blockers for children potentially causing irreversible consequences. Puberty blockers are a safeguarding/ malpractice timebomb.

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains

FFS it's like talking to tar. I'm out.

Not heard of that expression lol, I know what you mean though and everything that's been said is true.
It's not that no-one wants a debate, or a discussion, it's with the brick walled minds they're just incapable of one and people have come to the conclusion it's just not worth the time or mental energy with some of the posters, they're best off shouting and moaning to themselves.
The post where the keeping silent feels like being complacent, I hear that and I feel the same.
Which is why I can never keep my trap shut either lol

Well no, not really.

The PP who made the tar comment asked if anyone had been to a mermaids meeting. I said I hadn't but here were some transcripts of a mermaids training session for schools - with the obvious implication that these have influenced my opinion of mermaids.

Perhaps we'd all do better if we could find a common language. I'm willing to give that a go -

'HAVE YOU READ THESE TRANSCRIPTS, dear?'

fruit my head hurts having read that, surely the rules are 'lock the door, flush the loo, wash your hands'

The only other 'rules' I can think of are stereotypes 'brush your hair, do your make-up'

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/07/2020 21:33

There is a judicial review pending on how GIDS has managed some cases.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 05/07/2020 21:33

@Chewy85

I didn’t know what Mermaids was, but from googling all I can see is that they provide educational and emotional support for children with gender issues? How is that so bad?

I think if we look to boycott all companies who support charities we disagree with or are not ethical we wouldn’t shop anywhere! It’ll not make any difference to them but massively inconvenience you if you rely on them

Because it's a very sexist and homophobic organisation.
ListeningQuietly · 05/07/2020 21:34

@user1471565182
Not sure which thread you have been reading
but this one does not reflect your comments.

Those who are transgender need and should get support
but Mermaids are not the right people to give it

Skyliner001 · 05/07/2020 21:34

No

Onlyaprawn · 05/07/2020 21:36

Yes, I have. Won't be shopping at Tesco's again.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 05/07/2020 21:36

Maybe because some consider it "transphobic" to say that a transwoman cannot ever be a woman

You won't see anything else, just because some people say that trans women can never be biological women?
Well, that's rational.
You're right, in they can't be biologically women. That's true, that's just basic science/biology but there's a line, that people cross that goes into outright hate.

Noo. Im gender critical but some shit is starting to wear bloody thin

GloriousTechnicolour · 05/07/2020 21:38

Yes I'll be avoiding. Already boycotting Starbucks for supporting Mermaids. I have massive concerns about the way they operate and the kind of 'support' they offer children.

EthelMayFergus · 05/07/2020 21:40

Yes, I won't shop with them again now and I'm annoyed that I've inadvertently supported Mermaids with my recent spending with them.
