Is anyone else boycotting Tesco's for giving £80,000 to Mermaids?

Just that really... I was shocked, especially given all the news coverage there has been about the issues recently. I would have expected them to give it to an uncontroversial charity at the very least - and ideally one that most of their customers would like to support

No.

OldSpeclkledHen · 05/07/2020 21:42

I've boycotted Tesco ever since the self service check out needed Tesco operator authorisation for a packet of fucking crisps.
I left them on the checkout and walked out.
Never stepped foot inside since. That was 3years ago.
I was maybe hangry and hormonal 🙈

salsa899 · 05/07/2020 21:42

I have massive safeguarding concerns over the modus operandi of Mermaids and anyone with an ounce of child safeguarding knowledge would share the same concerns.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/07/2020 21:42

@EthelMayFergus

Yes, I won't shop with them again now and I'm annoyed that I've inadvertently supported Mermaids with my recent spending with them.
Same here.
MouthBreathingRage · 05/07/2020 21:43

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains, either give examples of 'outright hate' here, or give it a rest. You can't have a solid debate if you just 'decide' people are being transphobic or offensive without calling out this behaviour. Again, it reads as if you either do not have examples or you simply do not like what some have said, which isn't hate speech in itself. Of course, you are welcome to prove to the contrary.

Thanks for the heads up on what Tesco have been up to, as I was considering putting in an online order. I tend to order online with Ocado or Morrison’s and in store at Sainsbury’s, but was feeling like a change and had an online basket ready to check out with Tesco. I won’t bother now, plenty of other supermarkets that don’t support dubious groups like Mermaids.

TibetanTerrier · 05/07/2020 21:45

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

Well, I won't be
Tesco were one of the first supermarkets to really get on board with No Animal Testing of their own household and Toiletries range .

If you care about animals, DO NOT shop at Tesco. You obviously didn't know about the horrific cruelty they tried to justify and excuse in Asia. I have not shopped with them since and never will again.

FamilyOfAliens · 05/07/2020 21:47

You're right, in they can't be biologically women. That's true, that's just basic science/biology but there's a line, that people cross that goes into outright hate.

Where are you seeing this line? On this thread? Whatever you’re seeing, others can’t see it - you need to show it to people so it doesn’t look like you’re making it up.

rwoollsey · 05/07/2020 21:47

Jesus this really doesn't help prevent the whole MN being anti trans label.

Anyone who has an issue with a childrens charity needs to get a grip. This is disgusting and so are those who aren't using Tesco for supporting this charity

MouthBreathingRage · 05/07/2020 21:49

@rwoollsey have you actually read why people have issues with this charity, or did you just hear 'trans' and instantly assume that anyone who is against this particular group must be 'transphobic'? Honestly, sometimes I wonder what's happened to most people's ability to engage some critical thinking.

so anyone can set up a children's charity and no one should investigate what it's about? As soon as a charity gets its charity number, it's guaranteed to be a good Organisation?

I would laugh if I wasn't afeared you really think that way

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 05/07/2020 21:51

Whatever you’re seeing, others can’t see it

So how come User can see it as well then and gave examples, and I quoted?
Or is that another post that people are pretending they can't see or don't understand?

MrsGrindah · 05/07/2020 21:52

I’m disgusting for not using Tesco’s? Slight exaggeration there.Unless you are Mrs Tesco?

MorganKitten · 05/07/2020 21:52

Not at all, I’d rather children and families have support and don’t see a problem with any of the following...

Reduces isolation and loneliness for gender-variant and transgender children, young people and their families.

Provides families and young people with the tools they need to negotiate education and health services.

Helps young people to cope better with mental and emotional distress, and equips their parents with what they need to offer individual support.

Improves the self-esteem and social skills of children and young people.

Improves awareness, understanding and practices of teachers, GP’s, CAMHS, Social Services and other professionals.

NotTerfNorCis · 05/07/2020 21:53

It's not just a kids' charity though is it? It's an organisation that encourages children towards hormone treatment and surgery, and also spreads ideas in schools about how people's 'gender identity' might not match their body.

feetfreckles · 05/07/2020 21:53

And promotes hormones and surgery as the solution
And encourages children to have conversations with adults without their parents knowledge

Nothing to see here

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 05/07/2020 21:54

Yes. Yes, that's what the poster said was disgusting

Flippin eck.

feetfreckles · 05/07/2020 21:54

Oh please lemonades, I have totally missed the examples you age quoted, help me out

gingerbeer2016 · 05/07/2020 21:55

Didn't know they were had done this.

I agree it's a drop in the ocean compared to their profit margins and they probably could afford to give more but it seems churlish to quibble on that.

As a cis lesbian I really appreciate this gesture, thank god another generation hopefully won't be put through what a lot of us went through under section 28.

I am quite cynical about rainbow capitalism but I appreciate then taking a stand like this. I remember being a gay kid in the 90s and our teachers were scared even to support us when we were bullied or abused by our parents. Thank God that most of society recognises that lgbtq youth as a whole need access to support.

Mammatino · 05/07/2020 21:57

I’m really worried I genuinely can’t see any hate speech on this thread. I feel like it’s 1997 and I’m looking in the window of Athena at the magic eye poster, pretending I can see the picture. I couldn’t then and I can’t now. I see concern for children, concern for trans people and worry that they are going to be hurt and exploited for a hidden agenda. I don’t see how that’s hate or bigotry.

It's only on the previous page, not a million miles away?
Here.
Again.
Users post. Who can clearly see it too.
But then "it's not true we can't see it when it's pointed out under our noses" - erm, clearly not the case.
As I said already.

Noo. Im gender critical but some shit is starting to wear bloody thin
Those using the GC tag to try and excuse outright bigotry and hatred of trans people
Those who think right wing bellends who hate trans people purely because they hate any difference and radical feminists are some sort of kindred spirits
The posting of preloaded stuff like this, just so people can have a pile on to any dissenter
the insane paranoia

feetfreckles · 05/07/2020 21:59

I want trans youth to have support, that isn't the question

The question is that as a trans identifying person I think the support they give is horrific, and a form of conversion therapy. If you don't match, let's change you

No one needs changing just because their identity doesn't match their sex. There is NOTHING wrong with me or with people like me

The support we need is to be able to live as ourselves without discrimination, we don't need to be moulded to fit other people's ideas
