Is anyone else boycotting Tesco's for giving £80,000 to Mermaids?

Just that really... I was shocked, especially given all the news coverage there has been about the issues recently. I would have expected them to give it to an uncontroversial charity at the very least - and ideally one that most of their customers would like to support

Yes, when Starbucks partnered with Mermaids a few months ago, I pointed out some concerns about Mermaid’s approach to safeguarding to some friends who are teachers. They didn’t believe me, and did some research, as they told me later, so they could tell me how I must have misunderstood. They were horrified about what they’d read and came back and agreed with my concerns.

I think a lot of people are thinking more about this, and that's why the NHS have changed their wording around puberty blockers. Because there are potential legal repercussions for some in future.

vile, disgusting, misogynistic abuse from trans rights activists

You see - right here you're being transphobic. But you can't see that can you?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 12:55

I'm being transphobic for judging the comments of people who tell a woman to die in a variety of creative and sexually violent ways as "vile, disgusting and misogynistic"?

No you're right, I don't see it. Please educate me.

Shall I link to some? Start here:

I await that education too Eresh

StuffThem · 06/07/2020 12:56

Thanks for letting us know. I was about to try to switch to tesco but I'll stick with my current supermarket deliveries for now then.

GimmeAy · 06/07/2020 12:57

Is there evidence that transwomen have posed a massive risk worthy of debate?

They're male.

Well, says it all really doesn't it.

PotholeParadise · 06/07/2020 12:58

@GreytExpectations

Funny that nobody has been able to address my valid points about it being the parents who alow their children to transition. Seems people want to blame an organisation for bad parenting. Very bizarre
I replied to you with a very long post on that exact subject.

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that if your response to hearing of child abuse or neglect is simply to handwave it away instead of looking to see
A) who should have intervened and
B) why it didn't happen and
C) what can be changed to stop it happening again,

you are in the wrong century because we no longer think children are their parents property.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 12:58

No it doesn't say it all, quite literally. Here's the rest of my comment:

You need to produce the evidence why they would be any different to the rest of the male sex class. Not us. Learn how the scientific method works. You're the one making the claim which departs from accepted knowledge.

Impatiens · 06/07/2020 12:59

So you agree that it can sometimes be a 'bad' decision? And that Mermaids are enabling the 'bad' decision of those parents?

GimmeAy · 06/07/2020 12:59

They're not actually male. I believe under current law they're female.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 13:00

You believe wrong. People with a GRC in most ways are considered as the opposite sex, that is a small proportion of trans people. However there are exemptions in both the GRA and EA.

Also not seeing that as transphobic Why do you consider the calling out of threats of sexual violence by self proclaimed "trans activists" as transphobic?
PotholeParadise · 06/07/2020 13:01

P.S. I'm on less than 5% battery, so hurry up with explaining why you are presumably okay with parents being allowed to marry off their adolescent children, parents being allowed to get their children tattooed and parents being allowed to perform FGM on their children.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 13:01

And they haven't actually changed their biological sex, because that isn't possible for Homo sapiens.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/07/2020 13:02

The GRA is a legal fiction.

GimmeAy · 06/07/2020 13:02

Can you not see why people view MN as being a hotbed of transphobia? Really? You can't see it at all? You're going against all legislation currently being discussed. You're misgendering people, you're generalising transwomen as being male and thus a threat. You're not doing yourselves any favours. TRA's have had to fight and fight for rights. Rights not to be judged, mis-treated, discriminated against etc. Yet you all massively hate them as one singular group it seems.

Never said I was OK with that. I'd love to know who you jumped to that ridiculous conclusion, please point out where I said any of that was OK? And please do hurry.
GimmeAy · 06/07/2020 13:03

Because it's about gender.

RednaxelasLunch · 06/07/2020 13:04

The CEO of Mermaids has repeatedly stated that playing with "girls' toys" is how she knew her pre pubescent son was transgender. She has given a slideshow of a "gender spectrum" with GI Joe at one end and Barbie at the other.

We should be working to dismantle gender stereotypes, not reinforce them and medically intervene to "correct" children's bodies.

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 13:04

As an aside, I think it's downright hilarious how many people on here think boycotting will make a damn difference. Tesco won't miss your custom and it won't be noticed. All you are doing is virtue signalling and making things inconvenient for yourself.

Not on topic.

Topic. Mermaids. Topic whether their support helps children explore their feelings in a healthy manner or indoctrinates them.

Ninkanink · 06/07/2020 13:04

Hearsay is not examples. When people ask for examples they mean actual concrete examples, not just you saying that you’ve seen it. It also needs to be accurate, and not a blatant lie.

It would be interesting if we could go back through FWR and figure out the ratio of deleted posts to those left standing. If only every single comment were able to be archived, too, so that we could refer to the actual words said in each, it would be straightforward to demonstrate quite conclusively that a) -phobia/hate is vanishingly rare as most deleted posts do not contain either of those things, they simply breech guidelines and quite often on a technicality only, and b) sometimes people do get justifiably frustrated and angry at the injustice and say ill-advised things that are too combative or become too personal but again, that doesn’t actually mean they are hateful or -phobic, it means they are angry and got too combative or personal about it, and finally c) that deleted posts in total constitutes a tiny proportion of the whole.

But I’ve done it again...sorry. Just want to remind everyone that this thread is about Mermaids and the more people look into them and their practices the better.

2BthatUnnoticed · 06/07/2020 13:05

I’d trust Mermaids with my child about as much as the Catholic Church (that is, not at all). YANBU for boycotting.
