Is anyone else boycotting Tesco's for giving £80,000 to Mermaids?

Just that really... I was shocked, especially given all the news coverage there has been about the issues recently. I would have expected them to give it to an uncontroversial charity at the very least - and ideally one that most of their customers would like to support

Posters only want to discuss with those that agree with them

Aye, truth!
Got a "piss off if you're not here to discuss our type of feminism" last night - I mean it's always been blatantly obvious nobody wanted a discussion, but that's the most outright one lol, talk about making crystal clear

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 09:45

So still no actual examples of the alleged transphobic comments. And those shouting this the most have an amazing ability to write long posts telling us how transphobic we are but aren't able to show the receipts. Unless of course discussing safeguarding is transphobic? In that case, yes, I guess I am hmm

You've just missed the point entirely that it's pointless to post examples of transphobia because whenever I or others have done posters will just deny that it's transphobic, even though I've used examples that have been deleted because if transphobia. Maybe if you actually understand the point we are trying to make then you wouldn't constantly be asking for proof.

pinkglove75318 · 06/07/2020 09:47

I had never heard of mermaids before this thread, just had a relatively quick google search.

I REALLY cannot see why there is such anger? it seems to be a charity dedicated to helping children. but then again i would absolutely support a persons trans choice. it seems I am in the minority on this site

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 09:47

greyt

If I honestly believed that the whole of mumsnet was transphobic I wouldn’t be here

There are obviously (as I’ve said before) transphobic posters in the same way there are homophobic, racist etc, one board had to be hidden because of all the disabalist comments

My point was more that there are many people on here have a variety of views on the issues legally, medically etc

Its not as simple as mumsnet is transphobic or FWR is transphobic...posters have so many opinions

Tootletum · 06/07/2020 09:48

I would never support mermaids as I dislike the whole idea of the rigid gender stereotypes they seem to teach. I don't shop at Tesco's anyway.

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 09:48

I'm still waiting for all these mermaids haters to provide proof, with actual statistics of all these children who have been forced to transition...

I’m not going to try to change your very deluded and misguided mind.

But since you’re so keen on discussion, why don’t you participate in some actual discussion here? Perhaps you could start by setting out a coherent argument as to where all this -phobia is.

Tootletum · 06/07/2020 09:51

@pinkglove75318 I'd have agreed with you until I saw screenshots of what they are saying in their presentations. They equate gender roles with biological sex and think the two must be aligned in every respect. So instead of saying "you're a boy and you like unicorns and dresses, that's fine", it's "oh you may really be a girl and need referring to GIDS".

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 09:51

..posters have so many opinions

Funny that. You certainly aren't allowed to voice your opinion on a trans thread if it's different to the majority. I've been told numerous times to piss off and been called anti woman and not a "real feminist" because I disagreed with the majority.

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 09:53

You are very funny. You and others know damn well you can't have a discussion on trans threads on Mumsnet if your opinion doesn't agree with the majority. I've tried as have several others and you just get piled on, shut down, your words get twisted and then you are told to fuck off after being insulted.

Winesalot · 06/07/2020 09:53

I think you have been on the FWB enough to realize that ‘no debate’ has completely supported the lack of robust studies and statistics to be released on many issues. Including studies into how many detransitioners there are and why they desisted.

That’s a shame pink as I’ve posted quite a bit about Mermaids just over the last 2 pages. Maybe have a look and see what you think.

There are other transgender person supportive organisations available.

Oh I must have missed that. Could you state those examples again, please? Let’s dissect. And let’s also remember that you cannot extrapolate from one individual’s opinion, comment or statement to claiming that it alone reflects the position of a huge number of women, nor of a whole site, nor of a whole topic within a site.

Are you new to Mumsnet PinkGlove? I think this may be your first post.

I'm interested to hear how placing children on a medical/surgical pathway based on regressive and sexist stereotypes is helpful. Can you please explain?

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 09:57

What is the majority view though?

Ive certainly seen posts that I suppose could be termed middle of the road...

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 09:58

Feel free not to answer greyt

I can see you are busy and actually its gonna be difficult to say what the majority feel...without a poll

ItsLateHumpty · 06/07/2020 09:58

Hey GreytExpectations - did you see the examples I posted re ...proof that kids are being told they are trans if they like the opposite gendered stuff @ 08:12?

I didn’t mean to spam - I realise it’s quite long, just wondered if you’d read it, and if it helped?

I think it’s vital we support all transgendered people, but for children I want to be really sure that we’re not starting to medicate or offer surgery based on liking ‘spiderman’.

That scares me.

12boo · 06/07/2020 09:59

That's just one story
The problem as I (and I think most ppl) see it is that the entire method of assessment and underpinning "theory" is deeply flawed, which is extremely worrying when making decisions about treatment and referral pathways

GreytExpectations · 06/07/2020 10:01

12boo that link is just a journalist article using emotive language and one person's experience to make a point. It does not mention any proven statistics nor does it explain where mermaids charity forced children to transition.

If children are being allowed to have untested and risky drugs to transition then that's completly the parents fault for not intervening and doing their own research first. You can't blame charities for bad parenting.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 06/07/2020 10:01

Grey I'm well aware of the point your trying to prove. And you can't. I don't believe any poster here including yourself has even tried to talk about the concerns those like me have.

Happy to start from scratch though. HandsOff raised a good starting point -

I'm interested to hear how placing children on a medical/surgical pathway based on regressive and sexist stereotypes is helpful. Can you please explain?

I’m not going to read back through the whole thread. I’ve missed the comment(s) you refer to and I asked you to repeat. If you don’t want to that’s your prerogative. Like I said, I’m not going to try to change anyone’s deluded, misguided mind. But since you seem to be hell bent on making this about hate and -phobia rather than what it actually is, which no one could argue is hateful - wanting to protect children and young people and support them in healthy ways that foster greater wellbeing - I was willing to consider your points.

If you’re not willing to engage with me directly then I’m done engaging with you.

Why are people still pretending they can't understand?
I've just had the point made SPECTACULARLY why it's absolutely pointless to point out comments on another thread when asked.
Calling a trans woman on a thread a "Gloating manipulative male" is apparently not calling them a man, I said male! Try again!"
It's just.... no words lol
