Is anyone else boycotting Tesco's for giving £80,000 to Mermaids?

Just that really... I was shocked, especially given all the news coverage there has been about the issues recently. I would have expected them to give it to an uncontroversial charity at the very least - and ideally one that most of their customers would like to support

  1. Most charities are "controversial" in some way or another. The RSPCA, for example. Anything to do with LGBT+, racial or political issues. Anything that works abroad is criticised for not helping people in the UK. Larger charities spend too much on staffing and advertising... There's always a reason to criticise.
  2. I'd think the majority of their customers do support Mermaids - I think you're probably in the minority.
  3. £80,000 is absolutely nothing. Tesco had an operating profit last year of £2.15 billion. That's the same as someone earning £21,500 per year giving away 80p.

I am.

I think she’s almost certainly in the majority. Most people I know think Mermaids is abhorrent and not a charity to be supported

GimmeAy · 05/07/2020 18:11

I wish ye would so that I could get a delivery slot.

Mystraightenersarebroken · 05/07/2020 18:13

Yes.

I have emailed the CEO and applied for an alternative credit card this afternoon.

44PumpLane · 05/07/2020 18:14

For those of us who don't know what the charity Mermaids is, could anyone give me a sentence or two to explain please?

I appreciate I could Google but I assume I'd mostly get the press release "what we do" on first look.

ConstanceSalinger · 05/07/2020 18:14

Definitely. I'm going to miss their vegan selection but (shrug).

ConstanceSalinger · 05/07/2020 18:15

@44PumpLane their first sentences will probably tell you all you need to know

MistyGreenAndBlue · 05/07/2020 18:17

Yes. They won't be getting another penny from me.

No loss really tbh.

TheGreatWave · 05/07/2020 18:18

I won't be, not because I don't think Mermaids are questionable to say the least, but because I can't stop buying everywhere and everything based on one aspect of the business.

I don't shop at Amazon as that has many reasons to not do so.

Sn0tnose · 05/07/2020 18:19

I’d think that the majority of their customers either have no idea who mermaids are or they think that it’s just a lovely group who are simply providing emotional support to children and their parents.

Sn0tnose · 05/07/2020 18:21

Just to be very clear, I am not a person who thinks that Mermaids is a lovely group who are simply providing emotional support.

I absolutely do not support Mermaids, and am very disappointed that Tesco are helping fund them, but I won't be boycotting them. Not only are they the best set up for socially distanced supermarket shopping, and right now that has to be my priority, but they are also within walking distance from home and as I'm also avoiding public transport that is important too.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 05/07/2020 18:23

I await my deletion lol

MistyGreenAndBlue · 05/07/2020 18:25

Amazon is the hardest boycott for me. I'm housebound. But they can get to fuck too

CluelessBaker · 05/07/2020 18:25

I don’t shop at Tesco but I do support Mermaids, so maybe I’ll switch loyalties to make up for one of the boycotters.

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2020 18:26

Virtually every business which exists has a reason why people might boycott it.

Amazon/Tesco/nestle/any clothes shop who import from other countries (which is most of them tbh,)

Anyone who boycotts a business does so for their own reasons, not because it will make any difference, because it really won’t.

So if people want to boycott Tesco then crack on. But Tesco’s aren’t going to care, because so few people actually will that it won’t make any difference to them.

Yet another thread feeding into the negative press that all mumsnetters are anti trans when the reality is it's a vocal minority.

BackforGood · 05/07/2020 18:28

Thank you Misty

It is annoying when people start threads about things with the assumption everyone knows what they are talking about, and someone puts their head above the parapet to ask, but no-one will then answer.
If you know, it can't take much longer to give an answer than to typr - go and google it. Of course, by giving the information on the thread, it then helps everyone who is wondering having to separately go and google it.

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2020 18:29

It’s all virtue signalling really.

TheGreatWave · 05/07/2020 18:31

Tesco? Or those saying they will boycott them? Or even both?
