My neighbour has clients coming in and out all day

I've not said anything at all to her she's been working from the start of lockdown, clients in and out all day. She's a hairdresser yesterday I was popping out to the shops two clients turn up and one has the kid with them. She's putting all her work up on her social media I just think it's shocking.

Aibu to think this is just taking the piss?

So she’s flouting all the rules, including not paying taxes (which is why she doesn’t qualify for furlough) but everyone seems to think that’s ok and of course she gets free use of the NHS if she gets COVID. This is why 45,000 people are dead and Britain is doing SO badly. Health and safety would close her down. She can’t be insured, taxed, anything.

gotothecooler · 02/07/2020 11:01

I didn't realise I had to put all the information in the first post

Majority of people who drip feed is because they were not getting the froth they wanted in the first place

Yep. And then they pull this one if it STILL isn't going their way.....

I have asked for this thread to be taken down as a lot of the information I have put here is possibly outing unless she has told lots of other people.

notahinchersorry · 02/07/2020 11:06

I don't need anything to go my way it's not a debate I'm allowed to feel how I want to about it.

I'm sure if you all lived next door to her and had her on social media throughout this whole lockdown you would feel the same way.

OH just said to take it down because I've put a lot of personal information on here.

@QuizzlyBear

If you can prove that the money is for taxes, they don't count it when doing UC. Martin Lewis did something about this a few weeks ago

CatBatCat · 02/07/2020 11:13

I don't need anything to go my way it's not a debate

It is a debate if you ask AIBU

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/07/2020 11:15

And if everything thinks like this.......

I didn't say the problem and abuses should be ignored. I said they need to be addressed by those responsible. Did you deliberately miss that because it didn't suit your agenda or did your brain just grind to a halt with the mental effort of reading a whole three sentences?

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/07/2020 11:16

Sure he did.
@Newkitchen123 I'm also self employed and since I set my business up at the end of last year, I'm eligible for £0.

My DH is self employed and earned just over £50k last year, so he's eligible for £0.

We put aside money for outstanding taxes so have 'savings'. This means we're also not eligible for UC.

Trust me, it's easy to fall through the cracks of the government's 'assistance'. We're living off tax money 'savings' which means that unless things turn around bloody quick, our home will be repossessed by October and we'll be in trouble with HMRC when we can't pay our taxes. It's not straightforward.
@QuizzlyBear when I applied for UC money set aside for tax etc was ignored as 'savings'. Talk to them again.

Alexandernevermind · 02/07/2020 11:27

She's probably by the back door with plenty of fresh air, PPE and lots of disinfectant. It's fine, no riskier than the supermarket. We had outdoor haircuts earlier in the week. If was the first bit of money our hairdresser had earned since lockdown and we were very careful and safe.

PollyPelargonium52 · 02/07/2020 11:35

I would have reported her weeks ago.

Soontobe60 · 02/07/2020 11:39

@Brefugee

if it worries you so much take all that righteous indignation and dob her in.

Otherwise just keep your beak out.

Jeez, you’re a piece aren’t you? You do know we’re in the middle of a pandemic where over 50 thousand people have died don’t you? This is being made worse by people being selfish and now complying with lockdown. And people like you thinking it’s absolutely fine to do so?
AlfrescoWee · 02/07/2020 11:40

I don't blame people for doing this. As an example my friends (a couple) are self employed and employed.

Obviously their outgoings which are not extravagant are based on 2 incomes. Hardly unusual.

The self employed half investigated all the government help options but because of circumstances would only qualify for £500/ month and would then not be able to continue the business (which has massively slowed). UC because of minimal savings, set aside for a project before lockdown, would not pay out.

The employed half is being paid and working but again they are on far less income than usual. Life is tough for them and this can hardly be unusual.

Personally if it's a choice between homelessness or potentially catching CV (which isn't always fatal or serious) I know which risk I'd rather face and I don't blame others for coming to that conclusion.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/07/2020 11:43

It's estimated that between 1 and 3 million of the 5 million self employed people are not entitled to anything under the scheme, and that's not because they've under declared their income or cheated on their taxes.

But because they're relatively newly self employed, some of their income in the qualifying years was from other sources, earn over £50k, which doesn't necessarily make them rich, eg successful self employed tradesperson who works long hours to provide for their family.

But it does sound like this woman is taking the piss, to the extent that it sounds rather unbelieveable. Illegal hairdressing, benefit fraud and tax evasion, all boasted to the neighbours about. Really?

And the people who are having these haircuts are blameless are they? If people weren't willing to have their hair cut, she wouldn't have any clients, would she?

namechange30000 · 02/07/2020 11:46

My neighbours had to go on UC as she lost her job at the start of lockdown. She's doing a similar role to your neighbour at home to keep a roof over her head and feed her children.

It's none of my business what she's up to. I would never report her. She's doing what she has to do or she will lose her house.

sixthtimelucky · 02/07/2020 11:48

I don't blame anyone for trying to keep afloat when they have no other options, even throughout lockdown.

However I do judge anyone for not wearing PPE and for having rules such as no kids/extra people coming round (and please don't say that the visiting mother with child had no childcare - a haircut is not a necessity!).

And I judge people for saying things like 'my friend is not worried about herself or her kids getting the virus, she's more worried about lack on income', it's not about them, it's about potentially spreading it to vulnerable people which we have known for three months.

Imgladimnotyourchild · 02/07/2020 11:55

its nothing to do with you

Yellowbutterfly1 · 02/07/2020 11:59

If it meant keeping my home and feeding my family I would probably do the same and I think most others would too.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 02/07/2020 12:03

Where would you “report” her to? People on Mumsnet seem to think you can report anything to some kind of higher authority.

catspyjamas123 · 02/07/2020 12:29

Health and safely executive? People are/were being paid by the government to stay home and follow the rules not have a holiday! Yes, the clients are to blame too. We’ll never be rid of the virus with this attitude and that will be pretty damaging too. Remember the 45-50,000 dead are with a lockdown. Otherwise it would be 500,000. Do people even NEED a haircut? Can’t it wait?

@notahinchersorry

She was telling me at the start of lockdown she's claiming benefits as a single parent now so she can't be that desperate her OH has a good job as well.

Not in Leicester 30 miles away.

Nice addition.

Surprise surprise.

You obviously dislike this person, have some kind of issue with then for you to be sticking your nose right in and knowing very intimate details about her.
Why have her in social media if it annoys you so much? Why would anyone have anyone on social media that bothers them so much to warrant a MN thread?

I'd suggest you block her, ignore her and let her crack on. If she causes infections, on her head be it. You posting bollocks on MN won't stop her or her clients.
