Back story
Inexperienced driver, not massively confident, but getting there.
Journey to work is horrible. Inner city. Dodgy aggressive drivers.
There are a few routes that i can take but I take the shortest and most familiar. There is one part I hate.
Anyhow, I always stay in the left hand lane but at this one part there are sometimes parked cars so I move to right hand lane. This was the case today. I indicated and moved over.
Next thing I heard police sirens behind me. I thought shit.
Did I do a dodgy manoeuvre? I didnt see the police prior to this btw.
They then moved into the left lane next to me. The officer driving, mouthed at me " are you fucking stupid?".
Well I feel fucking stupid. Now im thinking was he trying to get past and i Didnt let him out and didn't pay attention as i was too busy trying to keep safe on that dodgy road.

This doesn't really sound worth worrying about, it's a minor thing, no one was hurt and you learn from mistakes. Even experienced drivers will make the occasional mistake, only takes a second to check your blindspot but easy to forget if you are concentrating on the manoeuvre when not expecting to have to go around parked cars.

It sounds like the police car may have been in your blind spot, yeah they shouldn't have sworn, but its bloody scary when someone pulls in front of you (I'm a blue light driver).

My husband had a similar accident, he was driving a police car, someone flashed to let him out and another car though they were being flashed at and drove straight into the police car (they didnt notice the lights and sirens either)

Anyway what I'm saying is these things happen, don't beat yourself up over it, put it down to experience.

Thanks nap
And goose you are dead right. Next time I will approach that road in the right lane till I'm past the parked cars.
However, I did that a couple of weeks ago when it was quiet and there were no parked cars that particular day!!
Usually they are though to be fair, so I will make sure I'm in the right lane ext time.

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but wonder if you've thought about using P plates until you've become a little more confident.

You might find that other drivers give you a bit more leeway and the benefit of the doubt.

Reading your post, I'd guess you did either 1 of 2 things:

1: By moving to the right hand lane to get round the parked cars, you pulled out too close to the car behind you, and almost clipped them. Things in mirrors can often be closer than they seem. And perhaps you didn't give enough warning of your intentions. Did you indicate before pulling out? The police put their sirens on to inform you of your near miss.

2: It is entirely possible the police were "on a job", and you didn't notice the lights/sirens until they were on top of you. Sometimes they just appear out of nowhere!! They assumed that all the surrounding drivers were aware of their presence, but you weren't, and pulled out in front of them. When the done thing when encountering sirens and lights is to stay in the lane you are in, getting as close to the edge of the pavement as you can. Even if that means you have to come to a dead halt.

In essence, OP. However I look at it, it seems like you had a lapse in concentration, which the police noticed. They gave you a rather rough and ready telling off in the moment, and then moved on with their day. These things happen. Don't worry about it. Just, "mirrors mirrors mirrors, and then more mirrors."

zingally number 1 possible but I definitely indicated. I can't think what car was directly behind me(wasn't the police car!) But the lane I moved to j went in front of a red car

Number 2 more likely

Thanks.

I will say, I have found that where many cars are taller now, it's possible to miss the lights on a police car if there is another car between you. They are meant to be seen far away, yes, but no one has x-ray vision. I din't find this as much as a problem when I was learning to drive.
