To ask if you are photogenic?

I’ve had to wade into the world of selfies as I’m using dating apps and most of my ‘natural’ pics are years old.

I am confident about how I look. I do get chatted up in bars and I think I look okay in person - but I need to take a stupid amount of selfies to get one ‘decent’ one. And most of the photos my ex had taken of me looked stupid too. I struggle getting the right post and it never looks quite right.

I’m almost tempted to post a pic (obv. incredibly outing) but even if I get critique I’m not sure I can do much better! So maybe I’m just not destined to be photogenic.

Are you? Are you better looking, worse, or pretty much the same in photos?

I’m not photogenic naturally but it can be somewhat learnt, camera slightly higher than eye height, tilted slightly towards you tends to be most flattering, if the camera is lower than you’d like then look at the bottom of the phone so your head is angled there and raise your eyes up keeping your head still, lift your chin out slightly if you have double chin. Pp tip of turning your head to your best side and looking at the camera slightly sideways is good. If your face is not symmetrical when you smile, wonky smile, one eye crinkles more etc then straight on is going to highlight that.
I do a closed mouth smile, tongue just behind my teeth, if you have a wonky smile it can help to close your jaw so your bottom teeth are touching the top. Get the eye smiling look by lifting your lower eyelids slightly, it’s hard to explain.
Body posing is more flattering slightly side on, but either way, arms away from the body such as hands on hips, elbows angled slightly behind you, or just make sure you’re standing up straight, no one looks good slouching, heart forward, shoulders back, one leg forward, preferably knee bent slightly. If sitting, legs crossed at the knee or ankle or else to the side, think how Kate and Meghan, anything to break up the shape.

And don’t be afraid of using editing apps to blur away fine lines under eyes, remove a spot that wouldn’t usually be there anyway, Facetune has a ‘detail’ feature that you can use to make your eyes stand out more and a ‘highlight’ to add a little more glow, only do things slightly to enhance though, you don’t want to look totally different.

I’ve been told I’m very attractive but I did NOT take a good selfie until I taught myself a little.

Hairwizard · 30/06/2020 14:17

Fuck no! Fking hate having my picture taken. Uurgh.

undercoveraessedai · 30/06/2020 22:12

@ArriettyJones aw I'm glad! And thanks for feedbacj! Grin

Dogwalks2 · 30/06/2020 22:18

I’m the opposite people always comment about how photogenic I am but I’m rarely told I’m attractive (except by my husband) in real life. We are never happy.

CiCiFreakingBabcock · 30/06/2020 22:51

Hell no!! Me in real life and me in photos are two very different stories, apparently. I don't know what it is but as soon as a camera or phone is pointed my way, my brain tells my face to do all these really weird, ugly things. I have got a couple of okay photos - our wedding photos were great, actually, so I don't know what happened there but so glad it did Grin

(doesn't care about being roasted)

I'm attractive in RL. And take beyond hideous photos. Which is frequently confirmed by meeting, say, a friend of a friend, who will have an inkling who I am because they've seen pics on social media via the mutual friend, and I hear "oh, you're really pretty, you don't look like your photos, you wouldn't think it was the same person".

Additionally, I had a friend tell me to buy a new phone after seeing a picture of myself I'd uploaded because "you must have a really bad phone, because you look so terrible in all your pictures, I'm sorry but you should know".

I've tried everything. Lighting. Airbrush apps. Makeup. Angles.

I look like something out of Fraggle Rock every time.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 30/06/2020 23:14

Not in the least photogenic.

There are almost no photographs of me, not even for graduations or our wedding.

Grin This made me laugh.

I look awful, pig faced and grumpy. I'm much nicer looking in real life but still only get up to pretty in a good light.

I have very photogenic children though. Lucky buggers.

TheChestnutCafe · 01/07/2020 08:37

I'm not photogenic in the slightest.
My passport photo is horrendous. When we were travelling back from Morocco a few years ago the guard at passport control asked me 'Why so angry?' after looking at my passport.
Thank goodness I can change it soon!

FenellaMaxwell · 01/07/2020 08:44

I do photograph really well but conversely don’t look great in real life. I think it helps I have a very symmetrical face?

QueenCT · 01/07/2020 09:25

Only in selfies or pro pics (I do some modelling)
Candid stuff I look awful, and I look worse in RL than on camera

zingally · 01/07/2020 09:28

Nope! Not in the slightest, unfortunately!!

I maybe come across 1 picture in 100 where I think "Oh, I look nice there!" Then it remains my social media profile picture for 5 years!

Oh god, my driving licence photo is the WORST!

For some reason, I felt compelled to get a new photo the day after I broke my arm in an exercise class. I hadn't been able to shower, my hair was a greasy, stringy mess, and it's just a diabolical situation!! I'm still got another 3 or 4 years on it, unfortunately!!
