To ask if you are photogenic?

I’ve had to wade into the world of selfies as I’m using dating apps and most of my ‘natural’ pics are years old.

I am confident about how I look. I do get chatted up in bars and I think I look okay in person - but I need to take a stupid amount of selfies to get one ‘decent’ one. And most of the photos my ex had taken of me looked stupid too. I struggle getting the right post and it never looks quite right.

I’m almost tempted to post a pic (obv. incredibly outing) but even if I get critique I’m not sure I can do much better! So maybe I’m just not destined to be photogenic.

Are you? Are you better looking, worse, or pretty much the same in photos?

God no, I'm butt ugly and this comes across in all photos.

I say of myself.....Beauty is only the flick of a light switch away!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2020 09:13

No I am so unphotogenic. Even in my wedding photos. I actually don't think I'm too bad in real life, but in photos I look like... remember the old advert for sun cream that said 'if you could see what the sun does to your skin...' and then showed a weird, enhanced UV type picture showing all these patches and blotches?

That's me.

I think it's because I rarely wear makeup, natural doesn't photo well maybe?

PhotoFinder · 30/06/2020 09:55

I don’t wear much makeup either actually, and although my skin is clear I seem to be able to photo every imperfection perfectly Sad

I literally look like a foot in photos lol. I'm average looking, not amazing. Genuinely look gross in most picture, unless I take the self and like you it takes me a very long time to look right. Maybe we aee ourselves different to the way everyone else does.

WhereamI88 · 30/06/2020 10:05

I find the people who are "unphotogenic" are the ones who don't have the patience to pose for the photo i.e. by the time i reached for my phone they're already moving/talking while the other 90% are standing still and posing. So the photo catches them at a weird angle or only half smiling etc. Practice a little bit, find your best angle and have patience. Or decide that life's too short and you don't give a shit

Beachcomber74 · 30/06/2020 10:16

Actors trick: Look forward, turn head to left & eyes out to front whilst keeping head to left . Have never had a bad photo with this technique.

Blobby10 · 30/06/2020 10:32

I only look good in photos taken by professionals so have very few good ones of me. First were wedding photos and I guess I was happy that day so looked OK on the posed photos. Second professional photo was beginning of last year when I'd just started to recover from divorce and wanted some nice pics with kids - those pictures are amazing but again taken by a professional in a studio with decent lighting and just having fun! I look crap in selfies and candid photos as my eyes disappear when I smile or I end up gurning.

OhIWouldDrive260Miles · 30/06/2020 10:34

I used to be when I was younger and had more angles. Not any more!

Isthisnothing · 30/06/2020 10:36

Yes I'm very photogenic. I know because people always exclaim in surprise when they look at them.

It's not as wonderful as it sounds - I'm less good-looking in real life.

I never take selfies so I can't comment on how to pose for them.

Its an interesting topic imo. I have another friend who is very photogenic, I would see the beautiful photo being taken and she looks completely different IRL. Then I have friends the other way and I see photos that do not do them justice; I often wonder do they not realise how beautiful they are.

PhotoFinder · 30/06/2020 10:39

To the person who suggested photo feeler - I actually have tried that recently. I tried my most recent 'nice' pic and have a top 5% score for attractiveness, but I don't get how that scoring works as it actually breaks down into a '5%' 'Somewhat', 65% 'Yes' vote and 30% 'Very'. So it seems a bit arbitrary to me - or I don't understand the algorithm.

I also noticed when I was rating that only other women were coming up so I assume I'm also only be rated by women and not men too.

No I am definitely not photogenic! On the rare occasion I take a selfie I can look semi-decent with careful posing but snapshots taken with my daughter for example make me look hideous, with no top lip, awful chicken neck and something very odd going on with my eyebrows, like a fake surprised face. I hate all my wedding photos.

I used to have a friend whom I lost touch with over the years after I moved away who was extremely pretty in real life, a total natural beauty, but was very unphotogenic. Not being bitchy, she used to say the same thing herself.

Soozikinzii · 30/06/2020 10:50

You probably don't realise how much work young girls put into a good selfie these days . I work with slot of that age group. Ages practicing best angle best pose . Professional make up and treatments, Filters .Its a really big thing because of online dating and social media .

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 30/06/2020 10:56

I am average looking at best, so don't expect photos to be amazing. However, I have a big nose, and mobile phone cameras totally exaggerate this. My nose goes from Barbra Streisand/Princess Diana big to Cyrano de Bergerac in selfies.

brightbluegentian · 30/06/2020 10:59

Its to do with the way cameras flatten the picture apparently. Some faces improve some do not. I would say both DH and I are about average when it comes to looks but in a photo he always looks lovely and I look like a squashed currant!

AlphaDalpha · 30/06/2020 10:59

I once got told that I either take a very good or a very bad photo. There is no middle ground with my face.

I got scouted when I was younger but, despite guidance, I just could not pose so didn't get very far!

brightbluegentian · 30/06/2020 11:02

I tried putting my photo through one of those filter apps and I looked very good if I used the ‘female’ filter!

TheVanguardSix · 30/06/2020 11:03

God no.
When I die, there will be no never-before-seen selfies of yours truly here.

Ironically, I was a well-known model in the 90s. Look at me now, bitches. Grin

MistyGreenAndBlue · 30/06/2020 11:04

Selfies usually mean the camera is too close and you get distortion.
Invest in a selfie tripod. Not the sticks as they can be seen in the pic and you still need your arm out.
Tripod means you can angle the camera phone at a distance and the pics look like someone else took them.
Not perfect but loads better. I love mine.

birdwatching · 30/06/2020 11:06

I am not sure if I am not photogenic or if I image I look better than I actually do (hence the Shock when I look at pics of myself).

wishywashywoowoo70 · 30/06/2020 11:12

@Shitonthebloodything

I look deeply unattractive on camera. Don’t think I’m that ugly in real life but maybe I’m just deluded.
Exactly me Grin
StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 30/06/2020 11:36

I think i have a total of about 4 snaps i quite like of me, the rest... just no! I dress up nice, do my makeup look in a mirror and think im looking good, look at photos after the event and think, what! Where did themake up go why do i look such a state 😁

Tunnocks34 · 30/06/2020 11:53

No. Without sounding conceited, I am actually pretty good looking in real life - this doesn’t translate well to photo however. Thank god I met my husband before I needed to resort to tinder!

PhotoFinder · 30/06/2020 11:55

@MistyGreenAndBlue Thanks for the tip! I've just ordered one to arrive tomorrow. Now I'm going to be the weirdo going off for walks in the woods to take 'natural' photos Grin

You're welcome. Have fun. 😊

ultrababy · 30/06/2020 13:18

I always look like a back end of a spoon in photos. Plus my teeth look horrendous which I don't notice in real life.
