To ask if you are photogenic?

I’ve had to wade into the world of selfies as I’m using dating apps and most of my ‘natural’ pics are years old.

I am confident about how I look. I do get chatted up in bars and I think I look okay in person - but I need to take a stupid amount of selfies to get one ‘decent’ one. And most of the photos my ex had taken of me looked stupid too. I struggle getting the right post and it never looks quite right.

I’m almost tempted to post a pic (obv. incredibly outing) but even if I get critique I’m not sure I can do much better! So maybe I’m just not destined to be photogenic.

Are you? Are you better looking, worse, or pretty much the same in photos?

My best photos are ones taken unexpectedly or candidly. When I pose I look like a buck toothed horse!!

Not remotely. Just had a big birthday and had about a million photos taken. I like one of them and that's because I took it.

No! I look bloody terrible on a photo, think I am reasonably attractive in real life but this does not translate into a shot. I recently had a headshot done for work, the photographer was a magician! Only photo in 40 years I have ever liked of myself. However I had to say to my husband that if I ever went missing do not use that picture. Police would be looking for someone else entirely.

Only at a certain angle. Head on, not so much, but my left side is my best side.

I can’t do the fish gap type selfies they all do now. I just look gormless.

I look hideous in photos. I hate almost every photo of me that's ever been taken. Somehow, I always look like something out of the Bash Street Kids. In real life, I'm told I'm attractive. I have a very photogenic friend - she has a very symmetrical face. I think that really helps. That, and the cheekbones!

I think I look far nicer in real life but I don’t ever spend much time looking in a mirror, the reality probably is that I’m a hideous looking creature just like photos show
On the plus side, I suppose I have the inner confidence that I look and therefore feel great which is more important!

There are some fantastic pictures of me where I look really good. Then there are the more common ones where I look horrendous, and I suspect those are closer to the truth much of the time. Generally the good pictures are a bit more posed, I don’t look great natural or when caught ‘in motion’. Sadly most of my wedding photos are of the natural/ reportage style as I couldn’t be arsed doing much posing on the day. They’re beautiful pictures in themselves and do a good job of capturing how happy I was, but I look like shite in the vast majority of them. Oh well!

With selfies I find taking them from above helps. There’s a tip as well that if you look away from the camera then look back just before the photo is taken it looks more natural- I don’t know how true that is.

OP you probably have a quality in the flesh that the camera can't capture, so your photo does not do you justice.

I even looked crap in my wedding photos!

I'm not photogenic, but have some lovely photos taken of me when I'm talking to someone and not paying attention to the camera. When I've had to do video pieces for work I don't look bad as I'm talking and expressive so not as self conscious.
Ds otoh is incredibly photogenic. He isn't self conscious at all and likes to pose. Always has looked good in photos, and still does at 14

Gosh this happened to me too when I got my photo taken for my work profile. The bloke doing it was gorgeous and he gave me such a lovely smile that I just had to smile back at him!

If I get a good angle I’m better looking in photos (plus I’m fat but my face doesn’t show it, so selfies are my friend).

I’m probably a 6/7 in real life but could pass for a 7.5 in a good photo.

DP thinks he’s very handsome (a 10!) but he thinks he looks like Shrek in photos . He definitely doesn’t look his best in most photos Still doesn’t stop him sending me the odd selfie when he thinks he looks good

I look horrible in photos. Every time I see a photo of myself that someone has taken I ask do I really look like that?
Their confusion makes me feel 100% worse.

Weirdly I am, apparently. People often comment how good I look it photos. I must be really ugly in RL!

All photographs of me are either Deer in Headlights, 1960s knitting pattern or Most Wanted poster.

I am so ugly in photos that I havnt even got a pic of me with my new grandchild. I just look old,saggy and my eyes disappear!! I definitely look so much better when I look in the mirror.

I get told I’m attractive IRL but I have an expressive and very non-symmetrical face so in photos I look fucking appalling! I’ve told DH he’d better not leave me as if I ever had to rely on an OLD profile I wouldn’t stand a chance!

There are ways of posing which help! I do chin down and out, then look up at camera! Then smile with your mouth and your eyes, as they used to say on America's Next Top Model! Can make a huge difference!

No. Veeery rarely the stars of angles, lighting and make up align and I might look semi decent. I'm dreading my wedding for this very reason!

I have practiced and have a technique. Always have the camera higher than your face so that you smile up at its bit. Stick your chin out a bit and make your neck long. Do a wide smile, no being self conscious about teeth. I tilt my face a fraction to the side. Practice in the mirror. Practice taking lots of shots so you get exactly the right angle. I also have practiced different body positions so I don’t look too fat. I am photogenic now but I wasn’t before I practiced getting it right. You can learn to be.
