That are famous in the UK are from Irish descent?

I'm watching Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury and it just struck me there are quite a few;

Ed Sheeran
Any & Dec
Dreamt O'Leary
Peter Kay
Jimmy Carr
Piers Morgan

Why have so many made success?
all English but all from Irish descent and I'm sure there are more but that's just off the top of my head.

Not to mention Sir Bob and Graham Norton, both of whom were born in Ireland and so are genuinely Irish rather than being of Irish descent.
The Irish are talented.

WorraLiberty · 29/06/2020 00:45

You've managed to name 6 people whose family are Irish and you think that's 'strange'? Hmm

Seriously?

ShinyFootball · 29/06/2020 00:45

Not really?

Loads of people from Ireland came over here. I'm in North London and most of the people I went to school with were Italian or Irish descent or Jewish.

I don't really get your point. That's what 5 or 6 people?

English / British acts are hardly in short supply.

Smallsteps88 · 29/06/2020 00:48

You’ve named 7 people.

Do you know how many famous people there are in the U.K.?

WorraLiberty · 29/06/2020 00:48

Over 6 million people in the UK have at least one Irish grandparent so no it's not strange to be able to name a tiny handful of famous people, especially considering singing and dancing is a big part of Irish culture.

Smallsteps88 · 29/06/2020 00:50

I mean ireland is almost right beside GB geographically and has a pretty extensive shared history so it stands to reason there might be 7 or 8 Irish people in England who become famous. Grin

WorraLiberty · 29/06/2020 00:51

Smallsteps88 agreed.

Next the OP will be shocked at how many famous black rappers there are in the UK...

No I don't find it strange in the least when about one in three of us has an Irish parent or grandparent. In fact really there should be more. ....but you are probably just noticing the ones with obvious Irish names.

BankofNook · 29/06/2020 01:55

It's all a conspiracy OP to distract the masses so that they'll never get their hands on our Lucky Charms.

Damnloginpopup · 29/06/2020 02:17

You missed Johnny Rotten. Its like a plague of locusts I tell ya. Coming here, taking our fame... Hmm

CreditCrackers · 29/06/2020 09:18

Over 10% of the English population have Irish heritage. You've found, on this thread, about ten celebrities so far who are English with Irish heritage. Unless you think there are only 100 English celebrities then you're a crazy person for thinking this is strange.

forallthetea · 29/06/2020 10:31

I'll be honest and say I wasn't aware there are so many Irish in England.

But what I should have said is most notable

I named the most notable
Male artist
Tv presenters
Comedian
Broadcaster

All of these from Irish descendants not Scottish or welsh that's the bit I find more strange I suppose.

OP posts:
user1471517900 · 29/06/2020 10:33

It is a fair point. I've never heard of Billy Connelly, Lewis Capaldi, Kirsty Wark or anyone Scottish in fact.

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 10:36

What an odd thing to notice many irish people moved to mainland Eng to escape famine and then work so you are going to have descendants.Hmm

Ylfa · 29/06/2020 10:37

😂 this thread

Jockjockjock · 29/06/2020 10:38

We get around... famine and diaspora and all that...

Ylfa · 29/06/2020 10:38

it’s tickled me quite hard

imagine if welsh people could also achieve celebrity success

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 10:40

There was also Irish migration in the 50s .

x2boys · 29/06/2020 10:42

Lots of people have Irish relatives,my Dad,s Irish he and his parents and siblings moved to England inthe 1950,s I had an Irish maiden name ,I don't identify as Irish though ,I have been to Ireland once in my 46years.

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 10:43

Nobody finds Welsh people interesting in the same way do they. I will start...
Anthony Hopkins
Tom Jones
Griff Rhys Jones
Sophie Rhys Jones
Catherine Zeta Jones...
There...five off the top my head without even thinking too hard....

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 10:44

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 10:47

They are welsh welsh though not English welsh Wink @Destroyedpeople

Toilenstripes · 29/06/2020 10:47

Welsh

Dylan Thomas
Anthony Hopkins
Richard Burton
Katherine Jenkins
Shirley Bassey
TE Lawrence
Tom Jones
Bertrand Russell
Roald Dahl

Shall I go on? 😆

thepeopleversuswork · 29/06/2020 10:48

Where to start:

First off Piers Morgan is of Welsh, not Irish descent.
Secondly last time I looked it was Dermot O'Leary.

Also as someone else has pointed out a huge number of British people are of Irish descent, I believe Irish people make up the largest single group of immigrants into the UK by proportion of population. So no, not really remotely surprising. And not really sure what the point of this post is, unless its immigrant bingo...
