That are famous in the UK are from Irish descent?

I'm watching Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury and it just struck me there are quite a few;

Ed Sheeran
Any & Dec
Dreamt O'Leary
Peter Kay
Jimmy Carr
Piers Morgan

Why have so many made success?
all English but all from Irish descent and I'm sure there are more but that's just off the top of my head.

OP posts:
SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 29/06/2020 10:49

imagine if welsh people could also achieve celebrity success

Yeah but the Welsh are famously bad singers, so that’s probably why I can’t name a single Welsh performer of note. None at all. Nope.

Smallsteps88 · 29/06/2020 10:49

Kelly Jones
Alex Jones.

Jones is starting to look as if it’s spelt wrong Grin

Anoisagusaris · 29/06/2020 10:51

Why are people mentioning Welsh and Scottish people who live in the U.K.? The OP is talking about people of Irish descent who live in the U.K.?

Do you actually understand that the Republic of Ireland is not part of the U.K.? (The Republic bit should give it away).

Anoisagusaris · 29/06/2020 10:52

And Graham Norton and Bob Gelfof are Irish living in Britain. They moved there in adulthood.

Smallsteps88 · 29/06/2020 10:54

Do you actually understand that the Republic of Ireland is not part of the U.K.?

No one mentioned the Republic of Ireland.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 29/06/2020 10:55

Because the OP brought up a perceived lack of Scottish and Welsh celebrities: All of these from Irish descendants not Scottish or welsh that's the bit I find more strange I suppose
EmperorCovidula · 29/06/2020 10:55

I only know who two people on that list are and they’re not the first to come to mind when thinking of their professions. I’m sure there are far more we’ll known Irish/Irish descent people in the U.K. what with it literally touching the U.K. and all.

DGRossetti · 29/06/2020 10:56

Quite a few "Brits" born in India too.

Joanna Lumley and Cliff Richard immediately spring to mind.

gopuff · 29/06/2020 11:03

I was always struck by the amount of famous singers from Wales & the amount of Welsh celebrities with Jones in their name.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/06/2020 11:04

Oh dear OP this one hasn't hit the spot you were aiming for Grin

pictish · 29/06/2020 11:11

This thread is funny.
OP don’t be daft.

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 11:11

It's because Welsh surnames were just patronymics. So Jones 'of John' ...Davies''''of David'.....Parry..ap Harri..(son of harry) Pritchard..ap Richard ( son of Richard )......
See its not just the Irish that are intreating.
And in answer to whoever asked..thanks I am quite aware of the sovereignty of the Republic.

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 11:12

*interesting

Quarantimespringclean · 29/06/2020 11:14

I think the OP is getting a hard time here. Considering what a small country Ireland is (the entire population of Ireland, North and South is smaller than the population of London) I am often surprised how many famous and successful people come from there. And impressed.

When I was growing up in London in the 70s I got a lot of stick about being from an Irish background. My Irish mother changed her accent and spoke like the Queen to avoid the negativity attached to being Irish. Nowadays being Irish is seen as a positive thing and that’s a change I’m very happy with.

My mum still speaks like the Queen though. Unless she’s with her sisters or her cousin. Then the original accent comes back.

Kalifa · 29/06/2020 11:15

Why is it so strange? England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are in each other’s pockets, moving over borders for the natives is no big deal and all of them speak the same language so obviously anyone who has a special talent, ambition or something to offer will move to London to make it. They all congregate in London because this is where their job is.
But do you see Irish people making it big in France or Germany? I guess not.

Zaphodsotherhead · 29/06/2020 11:15

My children are 1/4 Irish, on their dad's side.

Does that mean they are destined to be MORE FAMOUS THAN ME??

Because I'm not having that...

gopuff · 29/06/2020 11:17

thanks @destroyed. I'm Irish & has no idea the celebs in the OP apart from Dermot were Irish.

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 11:17

The op is getting off quite easily considering .

FFSFFSFFS · 29/06/2020 11:20

Anyone broken it to the OP yet that part of the UK actually is Irish?

overnightangel · 29/06/2020 11:21

You've managed to name 6 people whose family are Irish and you think that's 'strange'? hmm

😂😂

thepeopleversuswork · 29/06/2020 11:22

Quarantimespringclean

That's a fair and interesting point, well made.

But an entirely different one from the point which the OP was making, which was, well... daft.

I don’t want to mean to the OP, it’s just funny. I think it’s like when you get a new car and you suddenly notice that same brand everywhere you go - something must have primed you recently to start seeing the Irish in various famous entertainers?

tillytoodles1 · 29/06/2020 11:29

I'm from Liverpool, there's loads of famous people from here, and that's just a city, not a country.

Cramitmaam · 29/06/2020 11:30

England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have been mixing for a very long time. I think you'd be really hard pressed to find someone in one of those countries who didn't have heritage from at least one of the others, if not all.
