That are famous in the UK are from Irish descent?

I'm watching Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury and it just struck me there are quite a few;

Ed Sheeran
Any & Dec
Dreamt O'Leary
Peter Kay
Jimmy Carr
Piers Morgan

Why have so many made success?
all English but all from Irish descent and I'm sure there are more but that's just off the top of my head.

@Mrsjayy

They are welsh welsh though not English welsh Wink *@Destroyedpeople*
@mrsjayy Ok, I'll ask. What does English welsh mean? Also what's a welsh welsh person while we're on the subject
Mrsjayy · 29/06/2020 11:38

The op was on about English people with irish descendants the list a pp had was of actual Welsh people @Institutekartie

MissMarks · 29/06/2020 11:40

Ant and Dec have strong Irish roots too- there was a really interesting programme on earlier in the year about it.
I don’t think it is strange- it is well known that the Irish are often very talented in relation to music and the arts. Big families and lots of putting on shows and just having a ‘don’t give a toss what people think’ attitude.

TempestHayes · 29/06/2020 11:42

Anyone reminded of that woman from Big Brother a few years back? Helen?

"How much chicken is in chick peas?"
"I love blinking."
"Why are all the famous people Irish?"

ghostmous3 · 29/06/2020 11:42

Pretty much everyone I know has irish ancestry.
My first ex. His grandmother was irish
My next ex ancestors on one side came over in the potato famine, they are travellers.
My dp great grandmother was irish

My own great grandmother was irish.

Very common

eggandonion · 29/06/2020 11:50

I'm Irish but my grandfather was Welsh. So if I was famous I'd be of Welsh descent too.
If you are in Ireland on Friday nights from September to May we have a truly fabulous chat show called the Late Late Show. Most of the guests are from the canteen but there is usually an English or American person with Irish cousins who get a mention!

viques · 29/06/2020 11:50

Trish, Richard, Judith, Tim, Sean, Con, Sorcha, Mikey.

Friends. All of Irish descent. Not one of them notable or famous. I feel cheated.

ConferencePear · 29/06/2020 11:54

I remember Graham Norton doing "Who do you think you Are" and being rather embarrassed to discover he had English ancestors.
Me, I'm from a long line of stick-in-the-muds.{smile}

ravenmum · 29/06/2020 11:58

But do you see Irish people making it big in France or Germany? I guess not.
I can think of nine in Germany.

EmpressSuiko · 29/06/2020 12:06

Surely most people in England have Irish or Scottish heritage? 🤔

Kalifa · 29/06/2020 12:10

ravenmum
and who are they?

Anoisagusaris · 29/06/2020 12:13

Germany didn’t colonise Ireland though, and isn’t its immediate neighbour which has (now, not in the past though) a shared language. Easy to see that there are more people of Irish descent in Britain than in Germany.

ravenmum · 29/06/2020 12:14

A ginormous family that is probably totally unheard of in the UK :)

BillywigSting · 29/06/2020 12:16

Well we're a talented bunch and Ireland's biggest export is people dontcha know 😉

JaneJeffer · 29/06/2020 12:33

First off Piers Morgan is of Welsh, not Irish descent.
Thank fuck for that.

mumwon · 29/06/2020 12:41

if I go back far enough (like over a thousand years Grin)
I expect most people would have Viking ancestors
or 2 thousand & those blessed Romans!
Seriously I did modules on the Irish Diaspora - it was very interesting where people went & the work they did (fisherman from Waterford for instance) the potato famine & depression

gopuff · 29/06/2020 12:47

@JaneJeffer phew! 🤣

FirstClassFlightHome · 29/06/2020 12:49

Don’t forget the Nolan Sisters.

gopuff · 29/06/2020 12:50

My parents came to London for opportunity just like some of their distant relatives went to the US.

AuldAlliance · 29/06/2020 13:05

@Mrsjayy

The op was on about English people with irish descendants the list a pp had was of actual Welsh people @Institutekartie
No, the OP wasn't on about English people with Irish descendants. That's a whole other issue...
ConferencePear · 29/06/2020 13:20

Germany didn’t colonise Ireland
Germany didn't exist until 1871.

DontStandSoClose · 29/06/2020 13:29

😂😂 but you could list people who are from Wales or Scotland who are also equally successful, Tom Jones? Stereophonics? etc etc... There are talented people everywhere! Lots of people in England can be traced back to Ireland my husband's surname and my surname are both Irish names, nothing unique or notable. There was a point in history many Irish migrated here I think it was during the potato famine so many people have Irish descendants.

Callipygion · 29/06/2020 13:35

Ah now then, if you’re not Irish you’re wishing you’re Irish. 😊

amusedtodeath1 · 29/06/2020 13:42

I'm half Irish and have achieved absolutely nothing noteworthy, sadly. Hmm So many people have Irish decent, it's probably rarer not to have some Irish blood somewhere than to.

Russiandolleyes · 29/06/2020 13:46
  • I named the most notable Male artist Tv presenters Comedian Broadcaster*

Except you really didn't. Sorry OP, but I think this thread is a bit of a brain fart Grin
