Why are womens pyjama shorts so short?

I hate it! I want to be able to have a nice bath at the weekend, get into my pjs and curl up on the sofa with a book. Only I cant as every pair of pyjama shorts I can find are so bloody short that when I curl my legs, EVERYTHING is on display, also I feel I'm constantly having to rearrange them or rescue them from getting wedgied.
I'm fed up of having to put different bottoms on or drape a blanket/cardi over my legs to save my teen ds' blushes.
I've tried going up a size but that makes it worse as they are then really baggy.
3/4 length are just not the same, I want shorts.

Mens shorts are longer... I'm currently browsing online and am considering buying some, but I'd like some nice pretty/funky patterned ones. Does anyone else have this issue? Can anyone point me in the direction of some decent length womens PJ shorts..... or some nice patterned mens ones?

Come on manufacturers/designers, is it too much to ask for some womens PJ shorts that are of a decent enough length that I can relax in the evenings without showing my teenage boys what I had for breakfast, and that don't try to cut me in half when I turn over in bed!

I agree - I buy three quarter, but would also like shorts. I’m 5”0 so have a similar problem in winter. There are petite trousers but very few pjs - my legs don’t get longer at night! Next usually have a couple of pairs but not others.

Whatkatyforgottodo · 28/06/2020 08:51

Oh my god I’m not alone! I’ve been looking at this pair from M&S www.marksandspencer.com/2-pack-pure-cotton-pyjama-shorts/p/clp60440905?color=AQUAMIX
but it would be great if there was a whole range to chose from that are made for women’s hips and waists... I can see a gap in the market. Wish I knew how to start my own business...!

Kpo58 · 28/06/2020 09:01

Even shorts for baby girls are like hot pants. It's like they are trying to train females to be whores from a young age. Angry

TBF, some of the shorts for toddler boys have also been like hot pants this year too. I can't help but wonder if those who lust after children have ended up in children's clothes design. Envy (not envy)

TokyoSushi · 28/06/2020 09:03

Totally, totally agree, just make them a decent length!!!

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 09:04

I know even little girls pants are cut to be sexual if you are not careful.
Once my then 8 year old dd came back from a weekend with dad quite mortified cos his wife had bought her a pack of pants where the gusset was cut really narrow almost like a thong. She hated them and they got binned......and the poor girl had to listen about how I didn't dress her and her brother 'properly'....Angry

SockYarn · 28/06/2020 09:05

Totally agree! I avoid short pyjamas for that reason, just not comfortable. I have a great pair which I got in sainsburys a few years ago, they were sold as cropped leg but the leg is knee length. Matching t-shirt. I also have a pair of knee-length leggings/shorts which are great for sleeping in during warmer weather.

zingally · 28/06/2020 09:09

Oh, I know right?!?

It drives me (and my 65 year old mum!) bonkers! My mum solved the situation by buying full length pj bottoms, cutting them off at the length she wanted, then re-hemming them on the sewing machine.

I buy mens pj bottoms!! But they're really drab, and just seem to come in shades of blue or grey.

When will manufacturers realise we want them longer than our bum cheeks?!

Whatkatyforgottodo · 28/06/2020 09:12

I’ve now clicked on all the links and agree that other than the links to men’s shirts, they all still look a bit too short! I want ones that are about 2 inches above my knee and stretchy! Ooh and with pockets! Now off to google how to start your own business...

WinWinnieTheWay · 28/06/2020 09:13

I wear my husbands bit baggy boxers. I don't look too stylish but my woes they are comfy!

Auridon4life · 28/06/2020 09:30

I get Chinese dressing gowns off Amazon or Debenhams do some very nice chemises and dressing gowns. I buy like size twenty and just wrap it around myself.

CherryValanc · 28/06/2020 09:38

To have shorts, made for females, below the mid-thigh is my dream!!

Lostatsea10 · 28/06/2020 09:40

It’s appalling that still, women’s clothes are designed for men! And also that you have had to ask such a question and had many helpful ways around a very simple request- pjs that aren’t skimpy and un comfortable! Because apparently, just making clothes/pjs that aren’t indecent and uncomfortable is too difficult!

My suggestion- dependent on how tall you are- could you buy from the ‘tall’ range in Next for example as they’re cut longer. I’m 5ft so petite in everything even then they’re still too bloody long but when buying pjs if I buy from the normal range they’re longer so avoids the problem

rowrowrowyaboat · 28/06/2020 09:47

Thank you for this post, i also have the same problem, some great suggestions/links that il be taking a look at Smile

NoddingTulip · 28/06/2020 09:49

I think mens is the way forward for now. Ds1 lent me a pair of his last night to see what I thought..... I woke up this morning having had a wedgie free night!

I've looked at the links on here and most of the womens are still a little too short. I do like the mens m&s turtle ones in the 2 pack someone linked and have just ordered them (ds1 is going to have the grey ones) I've also ordered the debenhams mens check ones and some womens 3/4 and will re hem them to the lenght I'd like.
I like the lenght of the uniqlo ones but they look quite baggy so will have the same flashing issue as I have now.
In an ideal world I'd like some womens shorts that are just above the knee but similar cut to 3/4 ones so they are not really baggy. That way I can relax in comfort and safe in the knowledge I'm covering what's needed, just as DH and DS' are able to do in their pjs. I'm no prude, but I'd like the choice as to whether I want my bits on display or not, when I'm sat in the lounge relaxing or playing a board game with DCs in the evening is not the time to have my neather region on display.

I am looking for some soft, draw string "about the house " shorts too. Leggings are too hot and the short shorts make me stick to the leather sofa Grin
I like the look of the ones linked from New Look but you can't see how long they are

Tanfastic · 28/06/2020 09:59

I've got a few short pyjama sets which fit me properly but I have to wear a dressing gown with them otherwise they reveal everything if I'm sitting on the sofa and I'm forever pulling them down as I feel like they are going up my crack.

When I wear them in bed they twist round and end up right up the crack of my arse (and I'll say this again they do fit me).

Totally pisses me off. I'd love to find longer ones but everywhere I've been does the tiny ones Confused

Ginfordinner · 28/06/2020 10:00

This thread is really, really bizarre.

It isn’t NickyNacky DD wears shorts pyjamas and is struggling to find some shorts that are actually shorts rather than what looks like extremely short French knickers. When she goes back to her shared house, which is mixed sex she wants to feel comfortable walking around in her pyjama shorts.

Or look for slightly longer ones, there are millions on the market.

The point is that as a part of a shorts pyjama set there aren’t. That is why the OP started this thread. Most of us don’t want our bum cheeks hanging out of sleep shorts, even if you do. Why do you find that so difficult to understand?

I don’t know why you have posted on this thread. Your comments aren’t very helpful Hmm

@NoddingTulip thank you for starting this thread. DD needs some shorts for sleeping in so I am off to follow up some of the links posted on here.

Tanfastic · 28/06/2020 10:03

All these people saying there's loads out there. Why have I not seen any? Everywhere I look they are the tiny ones. Even Sainsbury's has about seven sets in last week every single one very short. I don't want to traipse round every shop or wear men's to be honest

VeggieSausageRoll · 28/06/2020 10:10

I buy separates tops and wear them with cycle shorts or leggings or DH's hipster boxer shorts which drives him crazy and not in a good way

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 28/06/2020 10:11

I just got these from M&S and they are great, not too tight and no arse hanging out.www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-striped-pyjama-set/p/clp60435666?color=GREYMIX
I like them so much I've ordered them in this colour too www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-floral-print-pyjama-set/p/clp60435664?color=JADEMIX.

eaglejulesk · 28/06/2020 10:18

That's why I gave up years ago and now wear nightdresses in summer!

romola · 28/06/2020 10:20

The lack of decent comfy PJ shorts that don't flash is ridiculous. Why can't women have pockets and long length too?
I've learned to sew and I can finally live the dream, my shorts are just above the knee, plenty of room for everything to be safely contained without losing the blood supply to my legs and I can have as many pockets as I want. On the other hand, DH can just pop into any shop and buy something just as comfy (in blue or grey) with a fraction of the effort.
Where can I sign up for the practical clothes for women revolution? I'll bring extra pockets.

Wellyouknowbest · 28/06/2020 10:41

I had this issue a few weeks ago, buying pyjama shorts for 8yo daughter, she only likes to wear shorts for bed, occasionally a crop top/vest. So I ordered her a boys pair, lovely, to the knee in age 9-10 as she's a bit tall, ordered a girls pair in 11-12 as they looked a bit smaller., they are literally a pair of pants! Little hot pant things, can't even get the words out to how mad it made me, so we will stick to boys shorts for night and day for now. I've seen mens lounge pants /shorts online they look comfy.

Hope link works

Appuskidu · 28/06/2020 10:53

I have some from Boden that are nice and not teeny tiny

intelmum · 28/06/2020 10:58

Mine are short to allow my lockdown leg hairs exposure.
If the hairs were trapped underneath anything the cloth might tear on the sharp stubble.
