DH and food hygiene

Making lunch and chopping salad. Needed to open a packet of chicken thighs so I stabbed through the plastic film as there was no tab. Put chicken in roasting pan, washed hands. Went back to making salad. DH outraged and convinced I’ll kill us all because I used the salad knife to open the chicken packet. I think he’s overreacting.

I wouldn't have gone back to using the knife on salad veg. Sorry, I'm with your DH.

Calic0 · 26/06/2020 11:09

Yeah, I do as well if I’m honest (think he’s overreacting) but the number of threads I’ve read on here that prove that my general approach to food hygiene is fairly relaxed means that I think I’ll be in a minority Smile

LadyGrey66 · 26/06/2020 11:10

Agree with your husband on this.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/06/2020 11:10

I am pretty chilled and eat things others run away from, but I would give the knife a wash

I would have washed the knife blade before continuing to chop the salad. And I think I am fairly relaxed when it comes to food hygiene.

Torvi · 26/06/2020 11:11

I also would wash the blade

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 26/06/2020 11:12

I would have rinsed the knife before using it again. Especially on something that wasn’t going to be cooked afterwards. With raw chicken you can’t be too careful.

Nottherealslimshady · 26/06/2020 11:12

That's really bad. Its raw chicken, I thought everybody knew not to contaminate things with raw chicken.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/06/2020 11:12

If you then went back to use the knife on the salad, then yes I’m with your DH, that’s not good food hygiene. I’d be pissed off if my DP did that.

If it’s just “the salad knife” and you’d finished chopping salad and used it for meat or any other purpose then put it in the dishwasher YANBU.

cakeandchampagne · 26/06/2020 11:13

You needed to wash it (or get another one) after you used the salad knife on the raw chicken.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/06/2020 11:13

And if you managed to wash your hands it wouldn’t have taken any longer to wash the knife at the same time.

Outnumbered99 · 26/06/2020 11:13

I would also wash the blade if my husband had been watching if I was alone in the kitchen I can't confirm either way because I am a bit minging

Braipea · 26/06/2020 11:14

I'm pretty lax about food rules, but I'd always give a quick clean a knife after its come in contact with raw chicken or raw chicken juices.

Raw chicken juice on salad veg you’re also going to eat raw? Absolutely not. You’ve created a salmonella cocktail.

Tlollj · 26/06/2020 11:15

Yeah I would have washed the knife too. Or waited until I’d finished the salad.

Drivingdownthe101 · 26/06/2020 11:15

I’m very lax about food hygiene usually, but I wouldn’t do this. Raw chicken juice on a knife that you chop salad with?

Seeingadistance · 26/06/2020 11:16

You should have washed the knife. Why didn’t you?

AriettyHomily · 26/06/2020 11:17

Urgh I would have washed the knife.

Sexnotgender · 26/06/2020 11:18

You should have washed the knife. That’s pretty gross.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 26/06/2020 11:20

Wow. Obvious chicken contamination but also think where that packet has been - it’s also dirty from the outside. So I would wash the knife with a detergent (not just rinse) after contact with outside packaging.

stella47 · 26/06/2020 11:20

Well, have you all died? We need to know.

LadyPenelope68 · 26/06/2020 11:21

That’s gross, there will be chicken juices on the inside of the pack where the knife tip has been. You’ll be lucky if you don’t all come down with salmonella

DeathMetalMum · 26/06/2020 11:21

I'm also lax with food hygiene, don't often wash fruit/veg etc. But I'd definitely wash or use a new knife after opening any meat packaging.
