DH and food hygiene

Making lunch and chopping salad. Needed to open a packet of chicken thighs so I stabbed through the plastic film as there was no tab. Put chicken in roasting pan, washed hands. Went back to making salad. DH outraged and convinced I’ll kill us all because I used the salad knife to open the chicken packet. I think he’s overreacting.

I would have either washed the knife or grabbed a clean one!

Sorry .... with your husband on this OP.

goodwinter · 26/06/2020 15:41

Raw chicken and cooked/cooled rice are the only two food hygiene things I'm paranoid about. Never mess with them!

Blahblooblah · 26/06/2020 15:43

I'd just add though that I would go over the knife with a kitchen or tea towel though don't think I'd be bothered to wash it thoroughly, I would if it touched the chicken

ComeBy · 26/06/2020 17:15

Blakbloobla: equally unhygienic.

purplecorkheart · 26/06/2020 17:23

I would have washed my hands and the knife. Also would not have opened the chicken anyway near where I was preparing the chicken.

whatisforteamum · 26/06/2020 17:33

I am a chef.This is.cross.contamination.A surefire way to pass on salmonella or.camplobacter.😥

CharityDingle · 26/06/2020 17:42

@untiedstates

Yes I am definitely showing him.

I decided to do a reverse because so often on MN people assume that men are crap in the kitchen, generally have poor hygiene and are incapable of anything domestic. Plus DH thinks MN is a vipers’ nest so wouldn’t have taken it seriously.

So will he take it seriously now because you presented it as a reverse?
randomchap · 26/06/2020 17:55

I'm not buying it as a reverse, OP's discovered that her food hygiene standards are low and is now trying to pass it onto her husband.

Apple1029 · 26/06/2020 17:58

You're one of those people who cook with the meat without giving it a rinse arent you op. I'm with your dh on this.

That's most people in the U.K surely? Rinsing meat here isn't advised, especially chicken as it spreads the bacteria around the surrounding surfaces.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 26/06/2020 18:01

I would definitely have have washed the knife though.

You shouldn't rinse meat ever.

There was a very long thread about exactly that a while ago!

For such a snidey holier than thou post maybe you should Rtft for a start? It's not op who did this!

Plus you aren't supposed to wash meat as you are just splashing droplets of potentially infected water everywhere! Maybe read up on current hygiene advice too?

Starbuggy · 26/06/2020 20:48

You shouldn’t rinse meat especially chicken, it just spreads the bacteria. Cooking it properly is all that’s needed.

If you’re going to have a dig, at least get your facts right Apple!

Starbuggy · 26/06/2020 20:50

OP either YABU for having shit hygiene and then realising everyone disagreed so changing your story or YABU for posting a reverse, no one likes a reverse thread, just grow up and post without playing games.

@Apple1029 You're one of those people who isn't up to date on food hygiene aren't you Apple?
