DH and food hygiene

Making lunch and chopping salad. Needed to open a packet of chicken thighs so I stabbed through the plastic film as there was no tab. Put chicken in roasting pan, washed hands. Went back to making salad. DH outraged and convinced I’ll kill us all because I used the salad knife to open the chicken packet. I think he’s overreacting.

I couldn't live with someone who prepared food like that. But I can't even eat reheated rice. Maybe do some research on food hygiene OP?

Rosebel · 26/06/2020 11:25

You'll be fine. I do this sometimes, haven't died yet. Of course if your husband is so worried tell him to do the lunch.

Hoggleludo · 26/06/2020 11:27

I would of washed the knife. My mother had food poisoning from raw chicken. She and the rest of the guests were actually hospitalised. They were incredibly poorly for nearly 2 weeks

Raw chicken you've got to be careful with.

Shoxfordian · 26/06/2020 11:27

Yeah probably best to have used another knife
Let us know if that salmonella works out for you

FinallyRelief · 26/06/2020 11:27

Raw chicken juice on a knife dangerous. Chicken juice in general very dangerous.

When my nephew was very small c 4 weeks he had bad vomiting and diarhoea and got taken into hospital - the hospital checked his stool - he had campylobacter and salmonella - they said it must have come from poor hygiene in the house. My brother in law said it was very close to them calling social services on them as a result.

fuckoffImcounting · 26/06/2020 11:28

I am the most laid back in the kitchen hygiene department, but even I don't fool with raw chicken. Wash the damn knife or you will see a lot more of that chicken than you want to.

Starbuggy · 26/06/2020 11:28

YABU to keep using the knife to chop salad after using it to open a pack of raw meat. You washed your hands so why on earth wouldn’t you wash the knife as well? That’s gross

pinkyredrose · 26/06/2020 11:28

I'm with you DH

BluntAndToThePoint80 · 26/06/2020 11:29

You’ll probably be fine if it’s a one off, but after my DH had salmonella after eating out I’m now very wary of chicken as I do not want to get it after seeing him hospitalised with it. I wouldn’t risk it regularly.

pinkyredrose · 26/06/2020 11:29

With your! Dh. I meant to say

idontgetpaidenoughforthis · 26/06/2020 11:29

Speaking as someone who did something very similar and subsequently had the most horrific food poisoning, I'm with your husband!

amusedbush · 26/06/2020 11:31

I’m very lax when it comes to best before dates and I will happily reheat rice but I’d never open raw chicken then chop salad without washing the knife in very hot soapy water.

I’m with your DH here.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 26/06/2020 11:32

I'd probably have rinsed the blade - especially since it's no effort if I was touching the chicken and therefore washing my hands anyhow

But if I'd been careful, and just done the plastic, definitely not touched the chicken or anything else in the packet, and I was having a long day, I wouldn't freak out over not doing it either.

eurochick · 26/06/2020 11:37

Salmonella salad - yummy!

I'm with your husband. Raw chicken is not one to be lax abut.

blackcat86 · 26/06/2020 11:38

Using the salad knife to open the chicken packet - fine. Using the knife used to open the chicken packet to cut more salad (without washing it up first) - yuck, no, that's a major cross contamination risk.

Mineteena · 26/06/2020 11:40

There are things you can be lax about. This is not one of them. Sorry, I’m with your dh

EmpressSuiko · 26/06/2020 11:40

You washed your hands but not the blade?
Personally I would have washed the knife, it might not have touched the chicken directly but it’s better to be safe.

Coffeecak3 · 26/06/2020 11:41

If you didn’t wash the knife I’m with your dh. You were washing your hands, why not wash the knife?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/06/2020 11:43

Please tell me you didn't keep using the same knife to make the salad?

FizzyPink · 26/06/2020 11:45

Oh wow, im always opening packets of meat with knives and then putting them straight back in the drawer.
Maybe I need to be more careful after reading this thread Blush

endofthelinefinally · 26/06/2020 11:45

I agree with your DH.
I am very careful with knives and chopping boards, especially if raw chicken is involved.
I had salmonella poisoning once and was hospitalised.

TheFlis12345 · 26/06/2020 11:46

I am very cavalier about food hygiene, but even I would not use a knife near raw chicken then for something that was going to remain uncooked without washing it in between.

Toothsil · 26/06/2020 11:48

I'm with your husband on this one.

AngusThermopyle · 26/06/2020 11:49

If you used the same knife on salad after opening the chicken packet without washing it first then YADBU. That's salmonella heaven, I'm with your DH here.

giantangryrooster · 26/06/2020 11:49

Your dh is in the right.
