In covid times is it ok to call a new baby girl Florence ..after Florence nightingale Hope or Vera Lynn. Which do you prefer?

Florence can always be shortened to Flossie 😉

Our children will tell their grandchildren / great grandchildren all about covid19 and they will learn about and it may even be in their GCSE papers. They will learn about Captain Tom, Boris, Joe Wicks and Vera Lynn and clap the NHS every Thursday etc. That's why I thought it would be nice and in years to come & would look good written on the family tree. Reading through the replies I am thinking of going for something different now..... Grace Violet (after NHS rainbow) A boy would have been so much easier..Joe, Tom or Alexander ( Alex) which is Boris' middle name x Thank you for all your replies x

Shit.

I mean, I have engaged on this thread but now even I am calling bullshit that anyone could have this thought process and yet still think themselves a capable parent.

Sittingontheveranda · 21/06/2020 01:35

@PyongyangKipperbang :)

When I read the update or Alexander ( Alex) which is Boris' middle name, I figured the whole post is a joke. Well played though and quite a funny thread.

People sometimes call their child after the place they were conceived, after another family member ..family name, or after the royal children ( charlotte and George very popular now or even after a popstar .If we all liked the same name that would be no good..we all like different names. But we should be kind and not make fun of others if we don't like a name. Be kind ❤️

It’s a nope for Hope. Or ‘Ope as they say around ‘ere because someone stole all the H’s.
Balonz is the best suggestion so far.
Or JK for Just Kidding.

ElizabethMainwaring · 21/06/2020 01:53

Alexander is actually Johnson's first name, and Boris is his middle name.
I presume he chose to go by Boris as it's more 'quirky' and suits his faux eccentric persona.

Slinkymalinky1 · 21/06/2020 02:19

Florence is lovely

Thurmanmurman · 21/06/2020 02:49

They are all awful. Florence is the best of a bad bunch. Vera Lynn is so try hard it's ridiculous

theThreeofWeevils · 21/06/2020 03:26

Hope is nice but can be counterproductive

Ain't that the truth. 'Disappointment Vera' would be a lovely and original name.

AliBear90 · 21/06/2020 04:22

I like Florence, but I am biased as my 1 year old is called Florence

sleepylittlebunnies · 21/06/2020 04:30

Florence Hope

herecomesthsun · 21/06/2020 04:33

What about Mary, for Mary Seacole, another pioneering nurse? It would be less obvious but would be very 2020.

1forAll74 · 21/06/2020 04:42

There is a lot of the Hope name around now. Vera is not such a nice name. I use to know a girl named Florence at school in the 1950's but she always got called FLO. But Florence is a lovely name. if it goes well with your surname.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 21/06/2020 04:43

Florence is best
I know a lovely Vera, but she is in her late 90's - not keen on the name at all - what about just Lynn on its own?

Hope sounds a bit needy.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 21/06/2020 04:50

I got my cat 8 years ago, and very nearly called her Aung San Suu Kyi (she'd just won the by-elections). A few years on, and I am really glad that I didn't, although I suppose if you name child after someone dead, it's less likely to turn out ghastly.
I'd avoid Cecil though.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/06/2020 04:57

NOT Vera! Hope is my preferred choice.

Khadernawazkhan · 21/06/2020 05:21

Vera Lynn - what a beautiful person she was. I'd be honoured to have her name.

GrandTheftWalrus · 21/06/2020 05:29

The hospital in Glasgow is called Louisa Jordan. So what about Louisa?

eggofmantumbi · 21/06/2020 05:47

Imagine even considering naming your child after Boris Johnson!?

whiteroseredrose · 21/06/2020 05:53

Florence is lovely. DD's best friend is Vera, also lovely.

Round here Hope is a hospital.

GinDaddyRedux · 21/06/2020 05:57

If someone wanted to learn about the worst aspects of the sneering aspiring Brit, you'd find it all here in the little digs at the OP.

Tnis is why instead of originality and diversity of names, we have a glut of Isla, Grace, Ava, Ivy, Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Henry, Oliver, Harry, Hugo, etc etc... these are all "nice, normal names" that everyone thinks is really unique and original

Hmm
homeishere · 21/06/2020 06:16

They will study the pandemic but they won’t be learning about Sir Colonel Tom or Joe Wicks. They’ll be learning about how social media corruption by Russia, white supremacy hidden behind populism and gross incompetence of our so called Government led to the worst death rate in Europe and one of the worst in the world (topped only by USA (home of populism) and the far right Brazil. They’ll learn about how this ‘leadership’ then led to the worst Western recession since the 1920s and how a no deal Brexit put the cherry on top.

It’ll be questions like ‘Populism not Covid-19 was the root cause of the Great 2020 Recession. Discuss.’ No room for saccharine remembrances of an old man walking around his garden to fund the public health institution that isn’t a fucking charity in the first place (and I say that as someone who contributed to his effort).

loveautum · 21/06/2020 06:52

My nearly 3 year old is Florence and I never shorten her name she's always Florence to us 💜💛🧡 I get some many lovely comments about her name x

Tlollj · 21/06/2020 07:09

In the extremely unlikely event that this post is real.
Florence is my favourite.
Hope second.
Vera lynn is ridiculous.
