In covid times is it ok to call a new baby girl Florence ..after Florence nightingale Hope or Vera Lynn. Which do you prefer?

Vera Lynn is slang for skins, i.e rizla.
It’s also slang for gin.

Will your child be happy to live it’s life knowing it was named because of a worldwide pandemic that killed thousands of people?
Just a thought. Florence is the best of the three just about.

I think names are very personal and associated to people you know, as PP poster who associates Vera with Vera Duckworth, I knew a Verity at School, who wasnt a very nice person so wouldnt choose that name, but I adored my grandma so love the names Amy and Florence. My Dsis called her DD Chloe and was told by our DM that she had an old maiden aunt called Chloe so she found it an odd name for a little baby, but now the name has become her and the old maiden aunt image has been replaced.

Happenchance · 20/06/2020 23:20

Rona-Iris (hyphen optional)

Serin · 20/06/2020 23:22

Too many common people called Hope

You sound like Katie Hopkins. Hmm

DuineArBith · 20/06/2020 23:23

I don't think I would ever name a child out of a wish to be nice to the NHS. No-one is going to know that is the reason as time passes, and I would rather just go for my favourite name.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 20/06/2020 23:26

No, just no.

Notnownotneverever · 20/06/2020 23:26

Vera Lynn is not a very nice name for a child. Hope is nice. Florence is a good name but shortened to Flo just makes me think of Aunt Flo and periods.

Pumperthepumper · 20/06/2020 23:26

@947EliseChalotte

Thank you for you thoughts ❤️ I do like Florence as apparently she trained nurses so we have a fabulous NHS . I thought it would be nice as our NHS has helped so many in covid times. Xx
😂😂😂😂😂😂

I have known two couples who tried for many years to conceive and who both called their long-awaited child Hope.

FairfaxAikman · 20/06/2020 23:29

Florence is lovely but overused, Hope is ok.

I like Vera but would drop the Lynn. I think of Vera Britten.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/06/2020 23:32

I would choose Hope but then thats because I named my DD Hope. She was so named because she was the baby that made it after 6 miscarriages in a row.

TatianaBis · 20/06/2020 23:33

Florence - meh, Vera Lynn - lovely lady but hell no, prefer Honor to Hope.

MrsMcCarthysfamousScones · 20/06/2020 23:34

We have a Florence in our family. She goes by her middle name as she dislikes it so much. I think Florence and the machine increased its popularity quite a bit.

Vera Lynn gives a girl a lot to live up to (and an awful lot of singing she will have to endure)

Hope was very popular quite recently.

CountreeGurl · 20/06/2020 23:35

Vera Lyn and Hope are terrible names. Florence is nice

Ellisandra · 20/06/2020 23:36

Change your own name if you want to honour the NHS! Don’t dump that on a child.

Florence of three if you must though - really common so no-one will ask her about Covid!

Vera Lynn is just AWFUL!

ConcernedAuntie · 20/06/2020 23:38

I absolutely hate the name Florence. It is my middle name. Once other pupils at school found out I was called Florrie for the rest of my time there. Argh!

copperoliver · 20/06/2020 23:38

Florence that was my nan's name he was so kind, loving and gentle. X

Musicforsmorks · 20/06/2020 23:40

I’m not enamoured of the uk’s repressed past, so neither ref does it for me

But my grandmother was called Florence, so it’ll be Flo and florrie or flozz 😁

Musicforsmorks · 20/06/2020 23:41

Magic roundabout too 😂

ddl1 · 20/06/2020 23:42

I like Florence best. 'Hope' is nice but could easily be nicknamed 'Hopeless' by mean kids. 'Vera' sounds very old-fashioned now but could very well one of the next names to come back into fashion as Amelia and Lily (and indeed Florence slightly earlier) have already done; so it's a risk you might or might not decide to take -she could turn out to be a trendsetter!. But not, I think, Vera Lynn - that could make her sound as though she was born in the 1940s. Lynn on its own would be OK.

whywhywhy6 · 20/06/2020 23:43

Florence.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/06/2020 23:45

'Hope' is nice but could easily be nicknamed 'Hopeless' by mean kids.

A) kids are shits and can turn the most vanilla of names into something mean
B) has never happened to my DD Hope in all the years she has been on this earth.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2020 23:46

Another vote for Corona, lovely name. Or how about Pan? (short for pandemic)
