In covid times is it ok to call a new baby girl Florence ..after Florence nightingale Hope or Vera Lynn. Which do you prefer?

OP posts:
DamnYankee · 20/06/2020 23:46

Of course it's ok. Covid or not!
However, "Aunt Flo..."
Vera...just no.
Hope. We need more Hope(s) in this world. And Faith(s). And Mercy (ies).
"Claire" means light, as does "Clara" and both are the names of famous (US) nurses
Congratulations and good luck!

augustusglupe · 20/06/2020 23:48

Why Vera Lynn? I love Joan Collins but I wouldn’t have called DD Joan in a million years. Pick a name suited to your little girl.
Hope, I just think of Hawp from Corrie

Jenasaurus · 20/06/2020 23:49

you could always call her Rainbow

Sunnydays123456 · 20/06/2020 23:51

Vera ! Are you serious?!!

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 20/06/2020 23:51

Florence Nightingale had quite racist tendencies. As dd3 announced in class having researched her with dd1. Dd2's middle name is Hope because her twin died shortly after birth of a heart problem (the twin who died had Patience as her middle name - she stayed alive throughout my pregnancy to make sure her sister survived.

ddl1 · 20/06/2020 23:52

'A) kids are shits and can turn the most vanilla of names into something mean
B) has never happened to my DD Hope in all the years she has been on this earth.'

I had friends to whom it did happen (it was their surname that was Hope) so may be biased. I also had a lot of trouble at one point with teasing for my middle name - not one of those mentioned here - so perhaps tend to think of such things. You are right that children can twist any name.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 20/06/2020 23:53

I love Florence and think Hope is pretty too.

Suzie6789 · 20/06/2020 23:53

Not Vera.
Florence, is the best of the three. I’d shorten to Flora or Florrie.

saraclara · 20/06/2020 23:54

You realise you're birthing a child and not a monument to lockdown?

Exactly. Why on earth would you saddle your innocent child with a name that ties her into a pandemic where tens of thousands of people died?

What on earth are you thinking? That's a terrible thing to do to a child.
Just choose a name that you like FFS and stop being so attention seeking at such a cost to your child.
Vera Lynn? Jesus. Seriously.

IagoWithABlackberry · 20/06/2020 23:59

Lynn (no Vera) is a nice name.
Florence always sounds a bit twee to me but it's as good a name as any.
Hope, similarly, not to my taste but fine.

But, as PP said, don't base your child's name off a global pandemic.

BeNiceToYourSister · 20/06/2020 23:59

Florence for the love of god!

ddl1 · 21/06/2020 00:00

None of these names tie you to a pandemic; it's hardly as though the child was going to be called Corona Covid!

You could also call her Elizabeth - the name of two of the first women doctors in history, Elizabeth Blackwell and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.

Normanisan1sland · 21/06/2020 00:01

Florence

BackforGood · 21/06/2020 00:01

What @saraclara said ^

Also this :
Are you serious about calling a child Vera Lynn OP?

Every time she walked out of a room, she’d have people singing, “We’ll meet again..., "

What a life.

I mean, I don't like the name Vera, but I do understand it is an old fashioned name and these things go in cycles, and it does fit in with a generation of Stanleys and Ivys etc. Same as Florence really - though that did have a bit of a revival when Davind Cameron called his dd that.

But seriously, you can't all your child Vera Lynn. It would be very unfair.

I don't like the 'Faith / Hope / Charity' names. But then I don't generally like any names that are the names of other things - from River to Mercedes, Tulip to Tequila

CuppaZa · 21/06/2020 00:02

Florence. Hope has been done to death, and less said about the name Vera the better

feelingverylazytoday · 21/06/2020 00:03

Are you having a giraffe, OP?
Can't believe this is a serious question.

Ludoole · 21/06/2020 00:08

Out of those names id choose Hope.

Jenasaurus · 21/06/2020 00:12

you could always call her something like Naomi Hannah Serena (then her initials spell out NHS)

borntohula · 21/06/2020 00:14

@feelingverylazytoday

Are you having a giraffe, OP? Can't believe this is a serious question.
I initially read this thinking 'are these common giraffe names?' Confused
GlummyMcGlummerson · 21/06/2020 00:14

Vera Lynn 😂

None of the above OP. Go with Balonz

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/06/2020 00:19

Hope has been done to death

Has it? We know no other Hopes but then she is an older teenager and everyone commented at the time on what an unusual name it was, maybe she is older than the current crop.

xmummy2princesx · 21/06/2020 00:20

Too many common people called Hope

That’s an awful thing to say!

Beautiful3 · 21/06/2020 00:21

Florence is really common where I live. I would go for hope

indie92 · 21/06/2020 00:22

Hope is ok , Vera is awful and Florence is quite classy

ViciousJackdaw · 21/06/2020 00:22

How about these:
Pandemica
Covidia
Borice
Dominique
Anduashia
