Anyone recall this lively but good-natured discussion from earlier in the year? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3817800-Is-the-chosen-English-rugby-anthem-appropriate-do-you-think?pg=1

What do we all think now given the shift in attitudes to slavery and things associated with slavery? I think the attitude back in February was that it was ok, because it was initially sung in the context of rugby by a black player. BBC reporting that that player's nickname was Chariot which is why he sang it.

AIBU to be interested in whether our views have changed at all?

Prince Harry has waded in.
So much for him retiring from public life...

Lol at Boris. One would find him amusing as a caricature of a blustering buffoon of an Englishman, but when he's actually the leader of your country - it's not quite so funny.

Makes sense that Harry might have an opinion - after all his wife is no doubt a descendent of black african american slaves, so she perhaps has told him what matters to her.

I'm glad for Meghan that she's back on her home turf. She was utterly stifled here.

point of order... many (as in very very many) of the slaves had native American ancestry, too. The 2 communities mixed heavily. Growing up in USA, if my black friends started talking family history or ethnicity they often commented on their native American ancestry. I suppose, if you think about it, they lost their African origins usually, was very suppressed and cultural references lost. They literally had more verbal family history about their indigenous American family origins.

God Save the Queen has a very questionable second verse.

MockersMisguidedByTheScience · 21/06/2020 08:33

Nother point of order: Megan Wales will almost certainly have slave-owner ancestry on her mother's side, as will almost all African-Americans. So maybe they should be reparating themselves?

YeOldeTrout · 21/06/2020 09:23

slave owners on her dad's side, too, probably. I was thinking that. Wikipedia says Thomas Markle had ancestors in New England back to 1600s.

TBF - we can ALL trace ancestors back to 1600s who had views that would be considered dodgy now.

Goady racist nonsense.
