RFU reviewing use of slave song Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Anyone recall this lively but good-natured discussion from earlier in the year? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3817800-Is-the-chosen-English-rugby-anthem-appropriate-do-you-think?pg=1

What do we all think now given the shift in attitudes to slavery and things associated with slavery? I think the attitude back in February was that it was ok, because it was initially sung in the context of rugby by a black player. BBC reporting that that player's nickname was Chariot which is why he sang it.

AIBU to be interested in whether our views have changed at all?

@Stygimoloch

I’ve reported this poster for her gleeful xenophobia.

How disgraceful to label a whole nation ‘thick’ twice. Total CF.

Yep, and ironic that the OP has showed a lack of intelligence multiple times. Those in glass houses.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2020 14:13

I wonder, MrsTP, if OP is thinking of/appropriating the lyrics of another song, Oliver's Army? It's writer had to go back and reassess his baseline thinking on that line.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/06/2020 14:13

We’re probably in the same catergory as Brits!

I can only apologise for the dreadful company you are being forced to keep. Grin

GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:14

Using someone else's song may be subject to debate but appropriating transatlantic slavery to suit your sporting desires is... well I'm not sure there's a word for it.

I call it comparing the genocide and enslaving of the Irish as a similar history to that of black slavery. It took us 800 years to fight against the 'Great' Britain, but we managed it. No small feat for a tiny nation who were taxed into starvation and tortured to death - particularly being next door to them. We were easy prey.

@SimonJT I’m embarrassed for her.

missyB1 · 20/06/2020 14:14

Ffs someone who clearly doesn’t know anything about rugby starts a thread about rugby! No black players are you having a ducking laugh??! Have you looked at the England team?? Do you know who the World Cup holders are?? Did you pay any attention to the players in that World Cup team??
My South African husband is laughing his socks off at this thread! Rugby is his religion, he’s got no reason to love an English rugby anthem (in fact he hates it), but he thinks you should educate yourself about rugby before starting a thread about it.

Truly awful!!

OP will be horrified if she works out I’m brown and British!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2020 14:16

A brown Brit???

Get thee behind me, Simon???.

GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:17

They? You know Simon is referring to himself, right?

He referred to players and coaches.

She won't work that out. I'm not sure she knows there are English speaking countries that aren't white either. I think she believes that USA, Canada, NZ and Australia are it.

GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:20

Finally back on topic.

he thinks you should educate yourself about rugby before starting a thread about it. Perhaps you should tell your laughing OP that I started a thread about a BBC article reporting on the RFU's decision to review the use of a rugby anthem.

@GimmeAy

I've been called a racist, a xenophobe and a GF on numerous occasions.
I’ll add homophobe too.
GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:20

OP will be horrified if she works out I’m brown and British! You'll be surprised to learn that my dd is brown and Irish Wink

OP posts:
GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:24

Ok - I've taken enough off topic personal insults and collective attempts to ridicule me and bully me into submission typical English tactic

@MNHQ can you please review this thread in its entirety - particularly the personal insults and attacks on me? Thank you.

As someone who isn’t a huge xenophobe someones skin is never a surprise.
GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:26

And @MNHQ - if you could actually leave the thread up, and not use your usual tactic of saying it turned into a bunfight, I'd be most appreciative.

OP posts:

As someone who isn’t a huge xenophobe someones skin is never a surprise.

As someone who also isn't a xenophobe - that you felt the need to mention that you're brown is also a surprise. Perhaps you like joining in with the gang? First time they've let you play with them is it?

OP posts:
GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:31

Because of course we needed a man to settle the whole thing. First it was the South African husband, then it was the Brown Man. Give me a fucking break.

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2020 14:32

But there is no bun fight!

The only poster casting nasturtiums is you!!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2020 14:33

No no! First was your cousin, surely!

Oddly enough when someone is blatantly racist and xenophobic it is very important that I inform them of my skin colour, because they usually start treating me very differently. They commonly suggest that I am required to earn my place, just as you just did.

Someone having a view doesn’t make them part of a gang, it does however make you look very childish for suggesting it.

GimmeAy · 20/06/2020 14:33

Keep going.

It was a naughty man who sung the song as well!
CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2020 14:34

Grin oh you naughty brown man, you!

Fancy unleashing logic this late in the thread!!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/06/2020 14:35

I am using that one. I love nasturtiums.
