If, like me, you see the lack of education provision for months and the devastating effect on the UK economy and people's livelihoods as marginally more important than a bunch of millionaires kicking a ball about you can come here to lament the lack of fucks around these parts. Football widows welcome.

Yeah I probably wouldn't have replied to you then @PhilSwagielka GrinGrin

Yeah, I'm guessing he's not too popular in the red half of Sheffield! Grin I have to admit though, it is nice to have more northern teams in the PL and Wilder is doing a great job. And it looks like we've got Leeds coming up next season as well.

It must be so weird for the players playing in empty stadiums though. Do the staff have to wear masks? I've seen photos of Duncan Ferguson wearing one in training.

Macncheeseballs · 20/06/2020 21:28

All family life does not generally stop for cooking shows. Sports fans are generally pretty self centred in their love of the game/activity.

annabel85 · 20/06/2020 21:30

I wish they had shut it off for good. Far more trouble than its worth, let the men find another hobby.

Ginfordinner · 20/06/2020 21:30

It does when The GBBO is on @Macncheeseballs Grin

Another one losing sight of the fact that there are plenty of female football fans.

I must have missed all those women causing mayhem in London last week under the umbrella of 'football lads'.

Women can like football but they don't break the law because of it.

If that's what you meant perhaps that's what you should have said. In any case their are also plenty of male football fans who are not anti social thugs, and plenty of anti social thugs who are not so called football fans.
ilovesooty · 20/06/2020 22:07

there

JimmyGrimble · 20/06/2020 22:59

Well @annabel I’ve been watching Man City for 30 years and have never been in or caused a fight. What a ridiculous statement!

SueEllenMishke · 20/06/2020 23:38

@annabel my husband and his friends have been following Manchester city for over 40 years. Two of them have PhDs and all of them are in very senior jobs. They've never caused or been involved in football related violence.
Stop being a judgemental dick.

HonneyBea · 21/06/2020 00:06

@annabel85 I started going to football at a young age with my grandparents and my mum. I'm in my late 40's now and have a season ticket with my mum and DD's. What a ridiculous statement to make.

It's the judgement and snobbery people object to....if you don't like something that's fine but to brand someone immature and violent just because they like football does tend to get people's backs up.
And understandably so.

JimmyGrimble · 21/06/2020 00:26

Weary I agree it’s horses for courses but not that everyone who goes to football is a thug. Surely that’s an unreasonable leap? Sorry to be a buzzkill for you. I and many many women enjoy football. Sorry but it’s true.

ilovesooty · 21/06/2020 01:20

@JimmyGrimble

Same here.

Nobody said that. Just that it's more trouble than it's worth.
SoupDragon · 21/06/2020 07:48

Oh here we go...OP puts on a jokey thread about football and we have all the buzzkill posters ‘lots of women like it’-‘it brings pleasure to my DH’ - ‘it’s good for the economy’ etc etc

It also brought out the not-joking judgemental posters calling football fans violent thugs etc.

SueEllenMishke · 21/06/2020 08:48

You said male football fans break the law and cause 'mayhem' Annabelle The judgement was there for all to see.

bwfcchick88 · 21/06/2020 09:28

As my team have sadly slumped to League 2, I'm not really mega interested in the Premier League/Championship being back- I'm only bothered about us. Husband & some family members are Liverpool fans so will be pleased for them when they (eventually) win the league.

annabel85 · 21/06/2020 09:53

@SueEllenMishke

I was referring to the disgraceful scenes in London last week under the guise of 'football lads'.

I never said every football fan was a thug but there's still a very sinister hooligan element attached to the sport that gives this country a bad name.

SueEllenMishke · 21/06/2020 10:30

Not any more. In the UK football events are so heavily policed and the penalities so high that there is very little violence. Clubs are working hard to make it a family friendly game again.
My DH takes our 5 year old son all over the country watching football. He wouldn't do that if he didn't think it was safe.

I assume you are talking about the 'football lads alliance'? They're a far right extremist group who really have very little to do with football other than having 'football' in its name.
Are you that narrow minded that you think that small group of extremists represent all male football fans?

Interesting that men can name players and goals scored decades ago but won't remember or be interested in the names of their child's teachers at school.

SueEllenMishke · 21/06/2020 10:44

The football fans I know are the biggest family men going. Just because you like football doesn't automatically make you an awful human being....they exist in all walk of life.

The most selfish men I know are cyclists and golfers - those hobbies take them away from family life for full days and weekends. But I don't automatically assume every cyclist and golfer is a selfish twat.

clary · 21/06/2020 11:37

I don't know how many of you have teenaged sons, but this morning DH was chatting away to DS2 - this is an unusual event! Not cos DH hates him but cos 17yo lads are not that chatty, well mine isn't.

Anyway. They were talking about the football. And no, their team isn't even playing as we have won promotion yay! But that's part if why I am glad footy is back. For some families it may be gaming, or climbing, or cycling, or eating chips, according to the McCains ad. For us, partly at least, it's football.
