Yes we can book hair appointments, nail appointments and banish the roots in a matter of weeks. We can shop today!! We are counting down the days to hotels, restaurants and bars opening. We are breaking out.

We have turned a corner in England people!!

The lockdown is ending at long last - so what are you doing today?

What I don't understand is how the UK is to achieve Patrick Vallance's stated goal of 60% population "herd immunity" (stated on March 13th) with mandatory masks on public transport? Perhaps the proposed end of social distancing in a couple of weeks time will speed things up, but still, it seems somewhat at odds with overall government strategy.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/06/2020 11:23

Nothing irresponsible about it. The shops are opening. We are allowed to shop in them. There is social distancing in place. There is absolutely no grounds to criticise someone for doing things we are allowed to do.

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 11:24

But the death rate has reduced significantly @Cam77, which would point to the mass testing is showing more cases because more people are being tested. In the early days of testing it could've been 5000 positives a day based on the death rate, but we didn't know because we didn't test.

I still think we are making good progress.

vanillandhoney · 15/06/2020 11:25

@Cam77

The Tories past and current preference for herd immunity is apparent in their every action. Mass opening of shops when 1500 new cases recorded yesterday? (and probably more like 5,000+ actually infected). Okay then. The UK has now had 87 days of 1000+ new daily cases. That certainly is "world beating" Mr Johnson.
1,500 cases out of a population of nearly 68 million. That's not even 0.5% of the population infected at this point. Even if you go by the number of 5000, that's STILL not even 0.5% of the population.

And the vast, vast majority of cases are in care homes now. The level of community infection is so miniscule as to almost be irrelevant to most people. Of course it's sad that people die from it, but people die from flu too and we don't go into lockdown every winter to save them.

Spudlet · 15/06/2020 11:25

I'm going to the woods for a run and I'm not going to leap into the nettles if I see people, nor expect anyone else to. Exciting times!

I'm not going to the shops immediately because I don't need anything. But my local fabric shop will be getting a visit soon as I'm going to make some new curtains, as will a DIY shop for paint. Can't wait to get it done. It's going to look lovely.

thenightsky · 15/06/2020 11:25

DH desperately needs some man sandals. He is having to wear trainers in this hot weather, which is doing his feet no good, plus it looks a bit daft with cropped trousers. Can't buy on-line because he has 'funny feet'. We might go out one afternoon this week.

LaurieMarlow · 15/06/2020 11:26

You’d swear the OP was heading off to lick the shops shelves given some of the reactions on here.

EmbarrassingMama · 15/06/2020 11:27

@understandmenow but all essentials can be bought online? I have managed to sort a new wardrobe and two pairs of shoes for my toddler during lockdown without standing in a queue to satisfy a need to touch a load of stuff I’m not going to buy or to support our capitalist culture. It’s not about money either - you can easily do all this cheaply without queuing to get into Primark.

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 11:27

Can I come @BarkandCheese? I also started a positive thread some weeks ago!

vanillandhoney · 15/06/2020 11:29

You mean we're not supposed to do that? Grin
Cookies2523 · 15/06/2020 11:30

You are from a deluded planet obviously! Get your head out of the sand!

SeekingAHug · 15/06/2020 11:31

I can't work out if OP is being 100% serious or not Grin

I am wfh today and I won't be visiting the shops anytime soon. Not because I'm scared of the virus but I actually find it hard to cope with the directions on the floors of shops! Am I the only one?! It makes me so bloody anxious. I have yet to set foot in a shop where the directions are super clear and make perfect sense! Hopefully the non essential shops will be clearer.

I'm dying to go round and try clothes on and touch everything though.

Have a lovely day OP! Our local zoo isn't opening until July sadly but will definitely be up there supporting them!

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 11:32

@EmbarrassingMama because YOU shop online and are prepared to put your toddler up n shoes that are not measured, doesn't mean everyone is.

And touch loads of things you don't want? People are aware of the virus, they know the importance of not doing that, most will adhere to it.

Calling people's purchases "tat" and not needed is so judgemental.

Don't go out, more space for people that want to shop instore but don't call people's purchases "tat". A pair of good fitting shoes for a toddler is not tat!

Frazzled2207 · 15/06/2020 11:32

Homeschooling and hopefully taking kids for a walk later. Can’t work in lockdown. So same as usual for me.
Isn’t actually anything I want that I can’t get in Sainsbury’s though I hope to support local businesses soon and am very much looking forward to going to the hairdressers.

BarkandCheese · 15/06/2020 11:33

@understandmenow Please do. We’re not alway happy, there’s a good bit of ranting and crying into gin, but we’re always there for a bit of support.

LaurieMarlow · 15/06/2020 11:34

If you buy it online, does that mean it’s not ‘tat’?

How so?

Please enlighten me, as I’d hate to be a purchaser of ‘tat’. 😱

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 11:35

@BarkandCheese I love gin! I'll see you there!

GabsAlot · 15/06/2020 11:35

Probably more irresponsible to leave them at home Grin
AntsInPenzance · 15/06/2020 11:37

Queuing for an hour just to get into Primark where you can't even try the the cheap tat on is not my idea of fun.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 15/06/2020 11:39

Staying at home and avoiding the crowds. I hate queuing at the best of times so the thought of queueing to buy anything but essentials is very unappealing.

There is nothing I really want or need so I'm going to sit in my garden in the sun with a book and a glass of my home made rhubarb cordial and let the shopaholics get their fix

understandmenow · 15/06/2020 11:39

@AntsInPenzance primark is not compulsory, you can go to other shops. However, do remember that primark is what some people's budget, they can't afford to shop elsewhere. #bekind
