Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 11:08

Im white, never been a massive victim of racism like most white people.. Completely agree with blm (peaceful)

But just wondering if little Britain and other people painting there faces black and taking the piss is the same as black men dressing up as white people taking the piss?

FYI I'm not offended by white chicks..
Just a general question..

Yes it's racist -ynbu
No-ybu

White Chicks is hilarious. Little Britain was also funny. I don’t think either are racist.

theonlywayisapple · 14/06/2020 11:19

Yes, of course it is.

bitofafunnyquestion · 14/06/2020 11:20

erm... I would suggest probably sexist more than racist (it's YEARS since I watched it and don't remember the end or fine details so I may be missing the point of the film). If I remember correctly it is playing to the Paris Hilton valley girl stereotype.

I suppose the point is whether anyone dressing up as another race is unacceptable in principle... probably 'yes' is a good place to start for now. But there certainly isn't the history of oppression, mockery and derision behind it that white comedians blacking up would carry- black and white minstrels etc.

I seem to remember the Wayans brothers playing up to a few black stereotypes in it too- black people are all great dancers etc.

Not to derail but an interesting one for me is in a lesser known UK comedy, How Not to Live Your Life. A black and a white man dress up for a party as 70s TV duo (one black, one white, really famous but can't think of their names, a starsky and hutch type pair) but with the races swapped (and skin colour changed accordingly). The joke is that they go to pretty questionable extremes to avoid the expectation that the white one would dress up as the white cop and vice versa.

bitofafunnyquestion · 14/06/2020 11:22

Sorry, rambling answer, in principle, yes I would say so. It is working to a derisive stereotype of certain white women even if not as harmful as a blackface equivalent given the historical/ social context.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 14/06/2020 11:23

I don't see either as racist. I just see impressionism. However, if LB is being classed by people as racist then yes White Chicks is too.

I will say though, when I saw David Walliams and Matt Lucas on Comic Relief or CIN recently I did cringe a few times. It hasn't aged well in the realms of political correctness

HelloMissus · 14/06/2020 11:24

No but it’s fucking sexist.

TheStoic · 14/06/2020 11:26

Racism is about superiority and domination. In what way do you think White Chicks would be racist?

bitofafunnyquestion · 14/06/2020 11:32

TheStoic surely if it is suggesting that those being parodied/ dressed up as are inferior, using that definition. Which I think the film is. The portrayal is that they are pretty vacuous.

PinkiOcelot · 14/06/2020 11:32

I don’t think either are particularly racist. However, it works both ways and if LB is being removed then WC should too. Reeks of hypocrisy.

TheStoic · 14/06/2020 11:35

TheStoic surely if it is suggesting that those being parodied/ dressed up as are inferior

Women, yes. It’s misogynistic. Racist, not so much.

Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 11:35

Definitely agree it's sexist..

And I agree @sparepantsandtoothbrush little Britain has definitely had its day and cringy!

@TheStoic was little Britain them things? I don't 100% understand all that's racist.. If dressing as a black person is racist does that mean a black person dressing as a white person is too?
I'm not offended by it.. Just wondering how others see it..

RUOKHon · 14/06/2020 11:37

White people oppressed black people for centuries. Black people taking the piss out of white people is not racist.

White Chicks is, however, misogynistic and sexist.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 14/06/2020 11:37

I'm mixed race and find both White Chicks and Little Britain funny but I guess I'm not allowed to anymore. Its a strange feeling actually. My white ancestry is clashing with my black side and I feel confused.

bitofafunnyquestion · 14/06/2020 11:44

Fully agree with you on the mysogyny, thestoic it doesn't look to have ages well at all.

madcatladyforever · 14/06/2020 11:46

No white face isn't rascist, it doesn't have the centuries of oppression behind it that blackface does.

SionnachRua · 14/06/2020 11:47

No. The power dynamic at play is very different. Black people haven't oppressed white people for centuries.

Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 11:48

@RUOKHon but do you think little Britain is racist? And white people dressing up as black people is racist?

OP posts:
Edwardette · 14/06/2020 11:50

Neither are racist.

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 11:53

No. White people haven't faced centuries of oppression the way black people have.

It is hugely sexist though.

NailsNeedDoing · 14/06/2020 11:56

I think both things are racist. I don’t see how they can’t be tbh. Taking stereotypes of another race that isn’t your own and mocking them is nasty behaviour whatever the colour of your skin.

While I agree that when it comes from black people towards white people it isn’t backed by the years of oppression, it’s still divisiveness based on skin colour which will always be a horrible thing and will always be racist. We can’t hope to get rid of one form of racism while saying another form of racism is ok. All of the division based on skin colour needs to go.

Little Britain has always been awful and even when it was popular I could never understand what people thought was funny about it. It’s like toilet humour for the supremely unintelligent.

SB1189 · 14/06/2020 12:02

Hi op, you must remember that racism doesn’t mean prejudice against someone based on their race anymore, it means racial oppression by whites - and you are guilty of it by virtue of your ancestory and skin colour. You therefore don’t get an opinion anymore. Now sit down and shut up.

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 12:02

It can be nasty without being racist.

SB1189 · 14/06/2020 12:02

PS- am I being serious? Not really..... but this type of opinion is pretty mainstream right now, especially on social media.

kazzer2867 · 14/06/2020 12:02

Racism is about superiority and domination. In what way do you think White Chicks would be racist?

^^This.

I would agree that it is sexist.
