Im white, never been a massive victim of racism like most white people.. Completely agree with blm (peaceful)

But just wondering if little Britain and other people painting there faces black and taking the piss is the same as black men dressing up as white people taking the piss?

FYI I'm not offended by white chicks..
Just a general question..

Yes it's racist -ynbu
No-ybu

Unintentionally so. Both instances. Ignorance is to blame. Learn from it and move on.

Davincitoad · 14/06/2020 16:59

@RUOKHon how is black people mocking white people not racism when it’s exactly the same thing as many things which are being removed as racist are?

Racism is bad whichever way it goes. Current movement assumes all racism is black vs white which is not always the case.

SpilltheTea · 14/06/2020 17:03

I see it as taking the piss out of a stereotype and I can't get upset about that.

phoenixrosehere · 14/06/2020 17:17

I’m curious on how many people have actually seen the movie vs just hearing about it.

AdultierAdult · 14/06/2020 17:18

Not racist, horrendously sexist.

phoenixrosehere · 14/06/2020 17:21

Also, I’ve never seen the movie aired here in the UK nor much in the States as a movie you stumbled on while flipping channels. The most I’ve seen it brought up was when Terry Crews did Lip Sync Battle and he did the song “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton.

'White chicks' is not racist but sexist.
Racism happens when the dominant culture, ie.white culture in our case, oppresses the minority culture and that domination is built in to that society eg. the police, business etc. This is called ' institutional racism'.
However it IS sexist, because we do not call men equivalent insulting animal names because of their gender. In this case it would be 'cock'. Oh hang on a minute....

Alabamawhirly1 · 14/06/2020 17:35

I don't think either are racist, because they are just dressing up as characters and making fun of personality types. They are not making fun of the characters for their race or belittling their race.

But..

Black people have said that because of the similarities to gollywogs and minstrel shows, they find white people blacking up unacceptable in all circumstances.

So I think its reasonable for blacking up to be banned in future. But I don't agree with old shows being cancelled when they are not being racist. They are being culturally insensitive due to ignorance. So a prefix to the show should be ample.

lemmathelemmin · 14/06/2020 17:36

I think it's very classist.

MrsHarveySpecterV · 14/06/2020 17:38

Neither offend me but if one is racist then surely the other is too.

Davincitoad · 14/06/2020 21:22

If blacking up is wrong then so is whitening up (not a word I know!)

It goes both ways. I can be called white trash but if someone was called black trash it would be hell on. There is a lot of institutionalised racism on both sides. Never more evident than now. Over the years l
Black hubby’s mates have made digs about white whores, white council scum etc etc. It’s exactly the same but not treated the same.

TheVoiceOfReasonableness · 14/06/2020 22:02

I’m very interested by this debate as it makes us challenge everything that we have thought before.

I think most people who are not racist probably think it’s as simple as being “colourblind” and treating everyone the same.

By that reckoning, either it is acceptable for white people to dress up as black AND for black people to dress up as white, or it is not acceptable for ANYONE to dress up as another race.

If it is the case that it’s OK for black people to dress up as white but it isn’t OK for white people to dress up as black because of the history of oppression, then I think many people think this means that there is no equality.

The latter perspective actually requires us not to treat each other equally but to recognise that because of history people can do certain things that others can’t because of their skin.

Should we call this the “post-equality” era?

I can also see that “when I can walk down the street and not be stopped by police because I am black, THEN (and only then) you can feel free to dress up as a Black person in the same way as I can dress up as a white person” might be a valid perspective.

TheVoiceOfReasonableness · 14/06/2020 22:08

Also, is Harry Enfield’s “Parking Pataweyo” racist? Perspectives please (preferably BAME)

SummerDayWinterEvenings · 14/06/2020 22:17

Racism does not mean "oppression by whites" as posted about a few post up. Racism means demeaning, or lesser behaviour, verbal, or in whatever capacity, bullying, pay etc..... simply to anyone because they are a different race to you. Kriss Donald was a 15 year old child (white) murdered in a racial attack in 2004 in..............Glasgow, UK. To exclude white people from being victims of racism is beyond ignorant. Donald was chosen as the victim for the attack because he was white. Despite having no connection to gangs or any previous attacks. He died the most horrific death as a totally innocent child because he was white.

Never heard of him? That's right the BBC only reported it I think twice and the trial and the murder did even hit mainstream uk BBC news. The BBC and other media did not want report on a white child murdered by non white adult males -and they still don't. Disgusting really.

Xenia · 15/06/2020 08:28

Certainly there is a massive market for whitening products, sadly, in places like India. That is obviously cultural appropriation and presumably very wrong to many and also dark skin in my view is much nicer than white - mine is white with freckles - i get so red in the face people seem to think it's fine to point it out, all kind of people - you ave very red in the face from hairdressers before covid and many others and in the sun I don't even get a nice tan. I think it is a huge shame anyone might want to whiten their skin although I can see why they might - just as apparently some Chinese have a horrible operation to make their legs longer as being tall is seen as better (and I suppose in its day crippling foot binding en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_binding in China for the rich was the thing to do - usually women, isn't it - in all cultures who seem to have to endure these things so much more than men - pity we cannot just unite against sexism)

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 15/06/2020 13:48

What about the South London patois based largely on a Jamaican accent adopting by white and Asian youth. Is this now banned? Is Phone Shop the next comedy to be axed?

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 15/06/2020 13:59

Is this cultural appropriation? If yes, lots of white and Asian kids in London need to be booked in for elocution lessons.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 15/06/2020 14:06

It was sexist by today's standards for sure. But then I am very thick skinned and found it funny. Still find it funny. I do like fart jokes and dead babies jokes too though, I am not sure my tastes should be a benchmark for humor...

OfaFrenchmind2 · 15/06/2020 14:12

SummerDayWinterEvenings I just googled this. This is horrific! I would like to ask why his name is not on manifestos against racism, but then that would be a silly question....
