Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 11:08

Im white, never been a massive victim of racism like most white people.. Completely agree with blm (peaceful)

But just wondering if little Britain and other people painting there faces black and taking the piss is the same as black men dressing up as white people taking the piss?

FYI I'm not offended by white chicks..
Just a general question..

Yes it's racist -ynbu
No-ybu

No. It's just a shit film.

RUOKHon · 14/06/2020 12:29

I totally agree. But applying those criteria, I don’t understand why it’s acceptable to have a drag programme on prime time tv

You’re right. There are lots and lots of parallels with this and drag and trans issues. I have a problem with drag for the same reasons. No man ever wants to drag up as middle-aged Bev, who’s a carer for her elderly father, was raped as a teenager and whose husband has been knocking her around for years.

OuzoWoozo · 14/06/2020 12:30

My understanding of blackface is that there was a deliberate casting of white actors over black actors who were then made up as black people, because of the racist views held by the industry. They did not want to employ black actors and deliberately blocked them from the industry. White actors were favoured over other ethnic groups.

In white chicks and some other shows, there isn't that element of discrimination. It is impressionism. You can find it funny or not but that doesn't necessarily make it horribly offensive in the same way.

So no, White Chicks isn't racist. It chatacatured a stereo type, but that doesn't amount yo the same thing in this case.

RUOKHon · 14/06/2020 12:33

And also, I hate these sort of false equivalence threads. “White people in blackface is racist, therefore black people in whiteface must be racist.’ It’s a logical fallacy.

It’s like when people say a woman hitting a man is as bad as a man hitting a woman, but failing to take into account the fact that the man has been emotionally and financially abusing the woman for years, and weighs almost twice as much as her.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 14/06/2020 12:36

White chicks is definitely "punching down".

Some Like it Hot was different in that though Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon portrayed stereotypes (Josephine was reserved and serious and Daphne was giggly and vivacious), they weren't taking a dig at these types of women. White Chicks pokes fun at vacuous, shallow and materialistic white girls. We're laughing at them, not with them.

jobhunter7 · 14/06/2020 13:10

With the portrayal of Craig David on Bo Selects, he may be mixed race but he is also British. I don’t think he was mocking Craig’s ethnicity.

Persiaclementine · 14/06/2020 13:20

@Yupimahelecopter

Ummm.. Its very interesting. So sum people say its only racist for white people to dress up as black before because of the past situations (not down playing it, completely awful /unforgiving, but trying to keep it short) but because white people haven't gone through it isn't racist the other way round? I am still not personally offended by white chicks or any similar films/programs.. But Both crap and in poor taste anyway.
White people have been slaves though, search barbary slave trade
Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 13:26

@Persiaclementine sorry I'm not trying to down play any race/colour struggles... Its so difficult to try and understand it from people's points of view without asking a stupid question or saying something and offending someone else.

I was just trying to sum up and wrap my head around what many other posters had said... Hope that makes sense.

OuzoWoozo · 14/06/2020 13:27

Oh and additionally to my PP, those white actors cast to those roles would then often play the character negatively, mocking the culture and race they were portraying.

That is the fundamental issue here. Exclusion, mockery and superiority. White Chicks cannot compare to any of that.

ItsSummer · 14/06/2020 13:28

Neither are racist, but if one is, then the other is.

Xenia · 14/06/2020 13:31

chick can be a sexist word. I don't really go in for banning words but if someone used it that tells us a lot about that kind of person. We are not little chickens we are adult human females. I don't regard it as racist however. You can have black or white hens.

NotNowPlzz · 14/06/2020 13:35

White Chicks is deliberately racist to white, black and Latinx people in parody form. The intent is not racist, it is to mock racist people and stereotypes. It's a very clever film and meant to be ridiculous.

Pinkyyy · 14/06/2020 13:38

If blackface is racist then so is whiteface. There's no such thing as unequal equality.

Yupimahelecopter · 14/06/2020 13:39

@ouzowoozo would you class little Britain the same as white chicks then? Or is that racist in your eyes?

I'm sorry I'm aware I sound very dumb in all my post, im just trying to get peoples point of views and not bloody offend anyone. I haven't even voted cause I'm unsure how I feel myself about it.

I don’t agree with the weird view that “black people cant be racist” or that white people can’t be victims of racism. Clearly the majority and most powerful group are in the best position, however, in any given situation black people can be racist (as can other racial groups) and white people can be victims of racism. For example the racially motivated kidnapping and horrific murder of Chris Donald in Glasgow- a white 15 year old randomly attacked and murdered on the basis of the colour of his skin.

The legal definition of racism is clear that it can be directed from and to any racial group and that’s quite correct in my opinion.

Needaripeavocado · 14/06/2020 13:44

nope i dont think so personally, it is just hilarious, we need to be careful we dont drive out comedy all together lol got to laugh in this crazy depressing world we live in

CayrolBaaaskin · 14/06/2020 13:48

I have an acquaintance who is mixed race south Asian and used to make racist comments about black women. I used to tell him not to say such things in my company and he would laugh and say he couldn’t be racist “because he was brown”. That’s obviously not true.

I’m not dismissing racism towards any group but it does exist to and from everyone.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/06/2020 13:53

Completely agree with blm

Do you actually understand what BLM want?

PippaHugo · 14/06/2020 13:54

Just like Fawlty Towers, White Chicks parodies rather than extols racism.

John Cleese talked of tackling racism into ways, either by “attacking it directly” or “to have someone who is picking a figure of fun speak up on behalf of that behaviour…

Of course there are people very stupid people who said, ‘Thank God someone is saying these things at last.’ We laughed at these people too.

.… BBC decisions are made by persons who main concern is not losing their jobs. That is why they are so cowardly and gutless and contemptible.”

Laughing at racists, be it through White Chicks and Fawlty Towers, is not racism. Anyone who thinks so is indeed "a very stupid person”.

That said, White Chicks is certainly sexist.

RUOKHon · 14/06/2020 14:24

Do you understand what equitable means?

Norabird · 14/06/2020 15:11

You have to understand the historical context. Blackface was used to belittle, demean and suppress black people. There just isn't that historical context the other way around. Not that I ever watched White Chicks. It looked like a terrible movie!

www.history.com/news/blackface-history-racism-origins

phoenixrosehere · 14/06/2020 16:04

No.

White Chicks is about two FBI agents who happen to be black posing as the two white heiresses they are protecting to stop them from getting kidnapped.

How many white characters donning blackface are doing so in a plot to help or save black people?

Also, is there a stereotype that all white women are rich, shallow, and unintelligent? What stereotype about white people is being portrayed in the movie?

DeeCeeCherry · 14/06/2020 16:05

I'm mixed race and find both White Chicks and Little Britain funny but I guess I'm not allowed to anymore. Its a strange feeling actually. My white ancestry is clashing with my black side and I feel confused

Yeah I bet.

I'm black and I whilst I find the racist stereotyping of Little Britain completely offensive and unfunny, I still abhor their ageist sketches of old white women pissing everywhere they go. I don't 'not' see it because they're white. My ancestry doesn't clash with me being a woman since I'll always be a woman. One that will get old too.

CrazyTimesAreOccurring · 14/06/2020 16:12

where does it end

It doesn't. There is no end. It is a continuous situation that will encompass more and more like a giant snowball

OuzoWoozo · 14/06/2020 16:13

Not in the same way. I don't think there was any ill intent, I think it was impressionism but really looking back, it was pretty thoughtless and I can understand offence being taken, and agree that they acknowledge this and have apologised.
