To be thinking about JKR's mental health right now?

I'm not going to patronize her enough to say I'm worried, but honestly! This is too muchm

Her initial tweet showed her how these issues were already concerning her (and she expanded on these fears in her essay). Then the response was disgusting and I'm sure can't have felt great (no matter how much she expected it). No one likes to read threats of abuse, especially when you have actually gone through what she has.

Then Dan Radcliffe throws her under a bus, a few more supposed follow suit. She spends time writing this extremely thought out (and incredibly reasonable, whatever your view) essay. She has to think about and bring up a very painful past. Then she STILL gets abuse for this, including rape comments. More Harry Potter stars including supposed feminist Watson denounce her. AND DON'T EVEN MENTION THE ESSAY!

Then The Sun shares the story from her abusive ex and throws his comments all over the front page?! Disgusting!

I know she's a strong woman and I hope as hell she's got people supporting her right now. Even for someone who didn't have a history of depression, this would be horrific.

Whatever happened to 'Be Kind?'

I dont think this is going anywhere for a good while :(

I agree, the abuse she is receiving is awful. I have sent her an email of support to thank her for standing up for women, I doubt she will see it but I wanted her to know many people support her.

Rojelio · 12/06/2020 21:55

I hope she's ok, she's got the conversation started but I hope that she takes a step back for herself now, no one person should have all this thrown at her.
I've been speaking to my husband on the issue and he has floated it on a male forum ... movies, DIY is the usual but he said there's been quite a reasonable debate about it but the majority believe she has done nothing wrong and the world has gone crazy.
I also shared her post on Facebook and I had about 6 ppl like, so not many but no other reaction, spoke to one of my teacher friends who liked it and her husband, both quite liberal ppl and they agreed with JK so I see these as small positive steps that outside of Twitter and the media it's not quite so demoralising, I bloody hope so anyway.

Regretful123 · 12/06/2020 21:55

I wish I knew what she did that was so wrong

Lalalamps · 12/06/2020 21:56

I completely agree with her. Thank you JKR.
You have my support.

MindTheMinotaur · 12/06/2020 21:57

She's great and I hope she's ok.

Velvian · 12/06/2020 21:59

I also have been thinking about her.

There is a very vocal movement that seek to obliterate the experiences of women and stories of their oppression and abuse. I have also been relegated to a 3rd sex more than once in discussions on feminism by being corrected and told that I am a cis woman when I have identified as a woman.

Self ID has enabled men convicted of sexual offences to identify as women to gain access to spaces reserved for some of the most vulnerable women in society (such as prisons).

Then there is the most worrying movement of causing permanent and irreversible changes to children's bodies when they (very sensibly) object to the gender role they are expected to fill.

All of this reinforces rigid gender stereotypes that we have been trying for so long to dismantle. I really admire JKR for speaking out, she is incredibly brave to raise her head above the parapet. I would never dare to express the above publicly.

Scruffyoak · 12/06/2020 22:01

I stand by her
X

Lalalamps · 12/06/2020 22:02

And I’m disgusted by her ex. No one deserves to be slapped. NO ONE.
The fact he does not consider that proves he is very abusive. He sounds like the typical abuser who justifies their behaviour with any reason and doesn’t even realise how toxic and controlling their behaviour is.

Tyranttoddler · 12/06/2020 22:23

If you read this J K, or someone close to you does- there are countless women with you. Thank you.

Keeva2017 · 12/06/2020 22:29

There are millions of woman stood beside you JKR. The most vulnerable of whom don’t have a voice on social media but you speak for them. I stand with you.

TheGoogleMum · 12/06/2020 22:31

Whilst I don't agree with everything she said the abuse she got is absolutely awful and everyone should be speaking out about that. The real issue is violence against women, without this women's only spaces wouldn't even be needed. People threatening violence against JK are just adding more violence against women. People on Twitter are so toxic and awful you have to agree with them completely or they think you're getting at something and want to call you transphobic. What we need is a sensible discussion and not people insulting each other (bear in mind calling trans people by their biological sex is considered offensive, this is something I never do becuase I do not wish to offend)

TheoneandObi · 12/06/2020 22:36

JKR rocks. Always did and always will. I am a rare beast who has never read Harry Potter but that doesn't stop me liking the woman and the way she's put her money where her mouth is in so many ways. And used the power of her pen to defend and support so many women
I had a 'debate' with my son and daughter in law today in which I tried to explain where I thought she was coming from. They were having nothing of it. Is it a generation thing? We older wimmin see things differently?

Midsommar · 12/06/2020 23:17

I feel so, so bad for her. She's enriched the lives of millions of people with her novels and creations, she is a fantastic writer. I hope she is OK - I certainly wouldn't be in that situation. The price you pay for (shock horror) speaking your mind!

KilljoysDutch · 12/06/2020 23:24

I Find the virtue signalling on mumsnet about JKR quite interesting as I'm sure it was only last year that every time she was brought up on mumsnet it was to be moaned about accusing her of being fake-woke and attention seeking.

Fancify · 12/06/2020 23:28

I’ve loved JKR since I was 12 and I don’t think it’s virtue signalling to show some support for someone who is being bullied, harassed and threatened for saying something a lot of people here while heartedly agree with.

Pepperwort · 12/06/2020 23:29

I think she must have been planning this for a while. I do hope she is ok, she has done an amazing thing with this. I still don't understand anyone who could think that this kind of abuse is in any way something to support, and I don't know what the hell Twitter is playing at allowing it either. Nor the legal establishments in the land - if they are silent, they're complicit with it.

BarbedBloom · 12/06/2020 23:38

I don't agree with her at all, agree with Daniel and don't like her much but the abuse she has received is too much, but I think this is twitter in general. My DH tweeted that he liked the new ps5 design yesterday and the abuse he has received over it was insane. A relatively unimportant subject got people fired up so of course something considered controversial is going to bring out all of the keyboard warriors, especially those who hate women generally

mammmamia · 12/06/2020 23:59

Daniel Radcliffe and all sounded ridiculous in comparison to the eloquence of JKR’s writing, even on Twitter. I was quite outraged to read this comments. What gives them the right to start trying to pacify HP fans over it? They’d be nothing without her. Most of them aren’t even very good actors. And Emma’s tweet sounded like it was written by a five year old Hmm

AMCoffeePMWine · 13/06/2020 00:03

Thank you doesn’t even come close to expressing how grateful I am to JK Rowling. I hope someone, somewhere, is helping and supporting her, and possibly shielding her from the worst of it. Because it’s really disgusting.

So much for the #metoo movement supporting women. Every sleb and their mother hashtagging that trend, and JK gets this misogynistic pile on.

And if you do happen to be reading, JK, thanks for the Ickabog, which is helping keep my kids (and me) busy and sane.

lenaperkins · 13/06/2020 00:08

JK, if you're reading, thank you thank you. Thank you so much.

The women who support the misogyny you have endured and feign bafflement that anyone would dare to suggest that natal men can't be lesbians should take a long hard look at themselves. The ones that believe that rapists should be in prison with women. Or that men who have had a male puberty should compete agains women in sport.

If anyone is in any doubt of what a warrior woman you truly are, they should take a moment to remind themselves at what you have endured. medium.com/@rebeccarc/j-k-rowling-and-the-trans-activists-a-story-in-screenshots-78e01dca68d

Miljea · 13/06/2020 00:12

Another, 100% support JKR for shining the torch of truth in some pretty murky places.

sleepyhead · 13/06/2020 00:14

I've never before felt the need to contact someone I don't know, and who doesn't know me from Adam, to express my support but I emailed her office yesterday because the vitriol has been so, so awful - the worst I think I've ever seen about anyone. The basest misogyny.

Truly disgusting. From people who say that they believe that telling someone they can't change sex will drive them to suicide. If they actually believe in the power of words like that, what does it make them?

TightPants · 13/06/2020 01:21

I had to come here, as my mind has been blown today after reading so much shit and abuse aimed at her.
I’ve been in a state of high alert all day, can’t explain it, but that we as women are being told what to bloody think. To deny fucking biology.

It’s depressing.
JK Rowling, I bloody love you. You are a wonderful, brave woman and you have our support.

mungrymutt · 13/06/2020 01:40

I used to be against cancel culture but as this become more "open" & the tide shifts & the blatant misogyny is exposed I hope those celebs who were quick to criticise & distance are cancelled.
