To be thinking about JKR's mental health right now?

I'm not going to patronize her enough to say I'm worried, but honestly! This is too muchm

Her initial tweet showed her how these issues were already concerning her (and she expanded on these fears in her essay). Then the response was disgusting and I'm sure can't have felt great (no matter how much she expected it). No one likes to read threats of abuse, especially when you have actually gone through what she has.

Then Dan Radcliffe throws her under a bus, a few more supposed follow suit. She spends time writing this extremely thought out (and incredibly reasonable, whatever your view) essay. She has to think about and bring up a very painful past. Then she STILL gets abuse for this, including rape comments. More Harry Potter stars including supposed feminist Watson denounce her. AND DON'T EVEN MENTION THE ESSAY!

Then The Sun shares the story from her abusive ex and throws his comments all over the front page?! Disgusting!

I know she's a strong woman and I hope as hell she's got people supporting her right now. Even for someone who didn't have a history of depression, this would be horrific.

Whatever happened to 'Be Kind?'

I dont think this is going anywhere for a good while :(

I thjnk she is incredibly brave. It would have been so much easier for her to keep her thoughts to herself or follow the masses and retain popularity like the hp stars but she is genuinely thinking about women who don't have a voice and speaking for them. I hadn't really thought of this issue before and certainly wouldn't have thought I would agree with this point of view but her blog was so kind and articulate and not transphobic. I bet loads of people criticising her have not even read it.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/06/2020 21:04

I would love a Harry potter star to come out and say "Whatever your views on the matter, violence against women is never ok. Please remember that."

We'll see.

I hope she is okay and aware of all the people supporting her. Wine Cheers Sláinte JKR.

BeNiceToYourSister · 12/06/2020 21:04

YANBU. I have a lot of respect for her and her bravery. Watson, Radcliffe et al are a joke IMO.

CaveMum · 12/06/2020 21:07

BabyLlama I believe the actress who played Luna (her name escapes me) did just that - stated she disagreed with JKR’s views but that threats were unacceptable - of course this was a huge transgression (pardon the pun) in the eyes I’d the TRAs and she was hounded to the extent that she has deleted/hidden her Twitter account.

The others - DR, ER, EW and now RG are spineless little ingrates.

Walkerbean16 · 12/06/2020 21:17

I've been thinking about her all day. I do hope she is okay.

Boudicabooandbulldogs · 12/06/2020 21:21

I cannot believe the amount of disgusting threats she has received. I agree with her. I know lots of abuse survivors feel the same. for well known stars to publicly trash her like that is so wrong and they should take a step back and reflect why they felt the need to do so.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/06/2020 21:23

@CaveMum I saw that and I do like Evanna, although I didn't think she needed to go on as much as she did about JK not doing it on twitter. It sounds like it didn't matter though if the comments still got that bad!

Poor thing. That's awful. She's had mental health problems herself and has personally spoken with JK so probably knew how much deeper it would've gone with her.

SquirtleSquad · 12/06/2020 21:25

She's on mumsnet and is well aware of the support, but there is no one out there who don't (even if they say it don't) take such levels of abuse.

SideEyeing · 12/06/2020 21:27

She's an absolute inspiration and one hell of role model. I stand with her completely. I hope she's okay - she's far too good for the horrendous venom she's been on the receiving end of.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/06/2020 21:28

@SquirtleSquad how do you know that?
Ok well hopefully she's seeing us. Especially any newbie supporters!

Iv been thinking exactly the same op.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 12/06/2020 21:29

I hope JKR is on Mumsnet and might see me say thank-you, you amazing lady!

FangleBangle · 12/06/2020 21:31

Thank you JKR.

Anotheruser02 · 12/06/2020 21:34

I was thinking exactly the same thing even before the fucking disgusting headlines today.

Anotheruser02 · 12/06/2020 21:35

Oh I'm glad she may see this. Thank you JKR.

agentnully · 12/06/2020 21:36

I'm an abuse survivor. I've also been subjected to abuse that came in the form of a man dressed as a woman flashing in the Ladies. Twice.

People who haven't had to put up with shit like this have no idea how devastating it is.

I haven't read the Tweets as I'm not on Twitter. Nor have I read the Sun or her essay but I've picked up here how brave she's been in support of women so she has my thanks and good wishes.

As others have said, it needed someone like her to bring the Traniban (picked up here and LOVE!) and domestic abuse into the light.

I hope she weathers the storm and comes out smiling the other end - the same as I hope for women who are being shit on everywhere. I also hope the clueless women (like me until recently) sit up and take note.

Doggybiccys · 12/06/2020 21:36

Another one offering supporting and saying well done JK. StarFlowers

macaroniandpizza · 12/06/2020 21:37

Jkr is a shining light in a very bleak time right now

MumUndone · 12/06/2020 21:41

What a strange, strange world we live in. Women who were born as men are actually, really women;, and the women who say they're not, get told they'll be raped by those same women who used to be men but are actually, really women. Hmm.

nothingcomestonothing · 12/06/2020 21:46

#IstandwithJKR, even the bloody bbc news at ten referred to her 'controversial views' yesterday. What insanity are we living where saying that something literally true, is true, is controversial and fucking rape and death threats are publicly glossed over by the terminally woke little scrotes whose fortunes she made? Angry

PatchworkElmer · 12/06/2020 21:46

I’m so grateful for what she’s done, but I am also worried about the strain this must be putting on her.

If you are reading, Jo, you have made me braver- just tentative liking of GC posts on Facebook for now, but it’s better than nothing.

Fatted · 12/06/2020 21:47

I have to admit, I can't stand Harry Potter. But I have a lot of time for JK Rowling. Especially more so now that she has been brave enough to come out and say all of this.

She shouldn't have had to write that essay. She shouldn't have had to lay bare her own life story and traumatic events to be taken seriously. I have been fortunate enough to not have experienced what she has, but even I understand the need for female only spaces and why women are angry at the loss of their rights at the hands of men pretending to be women.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 12/06/2020 21:52

I too hope she is well and well supported. I suspect she will have thought this through and planned for all Hell to break loose. I'm assuming she also has very good security in place. I hope so, she is amazing and to some people that will make her a target. Tall poppy syndrome and all that.

The really amazing thing is that nobody seems to be reading what she actually said, which doesn't seem very controversial to me. It's like she has just tripped a switch and thousands of bots have been activated. Like in that episode of Dr Who when all the plastic things started killing people.

Ikeasucks · 12/06/2020 21:52

So much respect to you JK Rowling - hope you have good people around you.
