Things are changing. Strange times. Midst Pandemic. Horrific events in the USA. people are 'waking' up to oppression and inappropriateness within comedy.
If it is no longer seen as acceptable to wear any kind of black costume, seen in LB, LOG, Ant & Dec, surely it is time that a sensible debate could be had on Drag. Is it acceptable? Is it not a mockery of female features for comedy in the same way original blackface was?
If not, why not?

**Head not held

MarshaBradyo · 12/06/2020 11:50

It’s not about not liking parts of it, it is a large part of what makes them similar.

motorcyclenumptiness · 12/06/2020 11:50

Ask Eddie Redmayne and Daniel Radcliffe, they're answering on behalf of women these days

MarshaBradyo · 12/06/2020 11:50

Actually comparable, not similar.

CorianderLord · 12/06/2020 11:51

Black face should never have been ok Tbf it's gross

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 12/06/2020 11:52

YES. I am hoping we will look back on this in years to come and realise how absolutely revolting and offensive it is

TimelyManor · 12/06/2020 11:52

@BankofNook

Oftern overtly sexual, offensive regarding menstruation/vaginas.

I went to see a drag act with a group of friends as part of a hen night and it was like this. Lots of "jokes" about the stench of minge in the room, "jokes" about domestic violence where he singled out a women and made fun of her appearance before saying that with a body like that the only thump her husband must ever give her is across the face with his fist, "jokes" about weight where he commented about some women squeezing size 20 arses into size 8 Primark leggings, and so on. It was cruel and nasty rather than funny and none of these comments were directed towards any of the men in the room.

How was that received by the audience?
EsmeShelby · 12/06/2020 11:52

I find it offensive. And I do think it is comparable to black face.

PintOfGin · 12/06/2020 11:53

Of course we aren't allowed to be offended! Unless we do it silently like good little women solely in the privacy of our own home and never voice it to another human being. No one gives a shit about sexism and misogyny (even most women apparently) so unless your willing to be branded as homophobic ect ect, then most of us just shut up. Which is sad but I don't see it changing any time soon.

eggandonion · 12/06/2020 11:54

Does this mean panto is dead?

PuttingtheFUNinDysfunctional · 12/06/2020 11:54

Does Dame Edna count?
I really love Dame Edna! Blush

14yearsandcounting · 12/06/2020 11:54

Whilst I do find it offensive I don’t find it as offensive as ‘black face’ Black people are dying in horrific numbers due to the colour of their skin, whilst women are still experiencing oppression it cannot be compared to what’s happening to black people, especially in America at the moment. Right now the battle against racism seems more urgent to me.

theonlywayisapple · 12/06/2020 11:54

@PaulineScrambledPhones

Women don’t count as people. Surely you know that by now?
Jesus Christ. Imagine going around thinking this. I feel sorry for you
Neednewwellies · 12/06/2020 11:55

I think it’s important to say here that the BLM campaign is long overdue. Calling out sexism and misogyny is in no way seeking to demote or diminish the importance of the BLM campaign.

Lynda07 · 12/06/2020 11:56

I've been wondering if characters in The Mikado and Madama Butterfly can still be made up to look Japanese? In the absence of any suitable Japanese opera/operetta singers of course.

Then there's Ali Baba and Sinbad, popular in panto, people made up to look middle Eastern - in the absence of a real middle eastern actor of course. Trudeau did that when he was a student and it was dragged up in the press a couple of years back but nobody thinks Trudeau is a racist even if they think he's a prat so it died a death.

Interestingly, the Chinese-American actor, BD Wong (Dr George Huang in Law & Order and a scientist in one of the Jurassic films), played Madama Butterfly on Broadway some years ago - in the absence of a Japanese female opera singer of course. He won an award for his performance!

MashedPotatoBrainz · 12/06/2020 11:56

Drag is under scrutiny for it's offensiveness but not to women, to transwomen. I read that it has been banned from some pride events because it was triggering.

LittlePearl · 12/06/2020 11:56

I hate it and yes, I find it offensive.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 12/06/2020 11:58

Widow Twanky is skating on very thin ice.

Lots of groups have deeply misogynistic acts and beliefs as part of the their "culture" TheLastSaola, and I don't see why we should tolerate it from gay men any more than we would from anybody else. Having your own history of oppression does not give you the right to shit all over another group. I don't believe in moral relativism. If something is harmful and offensive that doesnt change just because you say "but it's part of my culture".

Howzaboutye · 12/06/2020 11:59

I find woman-face very offensive.
And it's shocking that it is still acceptable. Hopefully that will be toppled soon too.
Oh but hang on who does it affect? Men? No. Well it's fine then eh. NOT

Campervan69 · 12/06/2020 11:59

Its vile and offensive to women. But who cares about them?

Fairenuff · 12/06/2020 11:59

Why is it accepted that transwomen are offended by David Walliams insulting them with "I'm a laaaydeee" but not accepted that women are offended by drag insulting them with "She's so fishy"?

It's almost as if women don't matter.

Neednewwellies · 12/06/2020 12:00

@14yearsandcounting, the BLM campaign is urgent. But worldwide, women and girls are also dying in horrific numbers too including but not limited to DV and FGM.

The current momentum in the fight against systemic racism must march on; absolutely. That does not mean that systemic misogyny must be forgotten whilst we stand up to hideous racism.

PheasantPlucker1 · 12/06/2020 12:01

14Years do you know how many females are killed by males each year?

There were over 200 women killed by male partners or ex partners in the UK just last year.

That isnt a little bit of discrimination, its 200+ dead women.

We dont need to do opression olympics between womens rights and BLM, but we do need to acknowledge the reality of women lives in our society

HoppingPavlova · 12/06/2020 12:01

It definitely is a mockery of females BUT it’s politically incorrect to say so. So best we just be quite as accept itConfused.
