To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

surrogacy will become the norm for those who just don’t want to go through pregnancy

Yes, that could happen. But one by one, countries are banning or restricting surrogacy, especially in Western Europe and parts of Asia. The UK and Ireland are outliers in heading the other way.

We’ve seen how women’s rights have benefitted society as a whole. Increased economic growth for one thing. And the truth of the old adage that when you educate a woman, you educate a family. So, yes if women’s rights are rolled back, I can see the future being a dystopia in many ways.

@theonlywayisapple

People voting Labour. Mind blowing.
I think people voting Tory will be judged more given how much the government are fucking us all up.
Rainycloudyday · 11/06/2020 16:12

Giving hormone/puberty altering drugs to children under 18.

TabbyMumz · 11/06/2020 16:12

Knocking down statues. Dont think theyd like that. Womens mode of dress. People living together unmarried. People of different religious beliefs marrying.

Grasspigeons · 11/06/2020 16:13

I think this will be looked back pm as a hedonistic era with the most ewual society ever got. It will get a huger divide between rich and poor with the environment being the driver. The tuch will be more conservative with a small c . No need for women in the workplace with more automation and massive iversupply of displaced labour so they will be pushed out

Nighttimefreedom · 11/06/2020 16:13

Agree with the treatment of the environment stuff, consumption of resources etc.
I also think in the not too distant future you will have more control over how and when you die.

bringbackfonzi · 11/06/2020 16:15

Eating animals and other forms of animal abuse.

LightenUpSummer · 11/06/2020 16:15

Agree with the PP who said makeup. I'm surprised to see that suggested here (or anywhere). As a bright eyed feminist in the mid-90s I thought makeup would be obsolete by now.

"How closely a society's standard of female beauty resembles how our faces look naturally, reflects how liberated it is", I'd have said. Still might. It's obviously not the only measure but probably an accurate one.

Also I'd add making parents (relevant to women especially of course) have to act at work like they're not parents. I think covid will change that, as it's becoming so obvious which colleagues have caring responsibilities and which don't. I hope employment laws are strong enough to withstand any discrimination based on this, that might be exacerbated in the near future.

Supersimkin2 · 11/06/2020 16:19

Porn.
Envt.
Refusing to believe the proof that animals have feelings as we do.
Refusing dementia patients and care home inhabitants a dignified death.

LightenUpSummer · 11/06/2020 16:23

I also hope that in the future something will change so that less child abuse can happen behind closed doors. Maybe awareness campaigns of the signs a child is being abused (though often they'll do all they can to hide it)

Also the non-payment of child maintenance. I'll stop now as I can feel a rant brewing Grin

thecatneuterer · 11/06/2020 16:26

Meat eating (unless it's the sort that's grown in factories that doesn't involve actual animals).

I've just watched Travelers on Netflix (it's a bit shit, but watchable) about people from the future coming to the present day. They are mostly vegan and are horrified to find bits of dead animals in people's fridges. It rang true (well, apart from the time travel bit obviously)

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 16:26

What is to stop us having an Earth where there are no governements. And every country makes sure that every person has shelter food and basic income

Can anyone tell me a reason - why we are not doing that!

PixelatedLunchbox · 11/06/2020 16:36

Zoos. Birds in cages. Animal testing. Factory farming. Eating sentient animals. Narcissistic selfie society.

TimeTravellersHat · 11/06/2020 16:39

Virtue signalling.

Selfishness.

vulvachips · 11/06/2020 16:41

Human nature, some will always want more.

BlackForestCake · 11/06/2020 16:46

That sexism was so ingrained that vulnerable young women thought they needed to have their breasts removed, and adults agreed with them.

AuntPodder · 11/06/2020 16:46

Namechanged for this since it's a bit outing... An ancestory in the late 18th century was - if not a slave trader - definitely profitted from trading in products produced by enslaved labour. In the 1920s, members of my family would clamber up pyramids when sightseeing in Egypt. I'm not happy about either but I try not to judge, partly because I think the next generation will query/be a bit horrified by some of the choices I've made...

Sabine123 · 11/06/2020 16:46

Giving out Knighthood's like smarties. I hate the fact that people who don't pay UK tax get knighted !!

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 16:48

@vulvachips that is why we need to get to a higher level of conciousness.

When we get to a level where we see that everyone has the right to shelter and food

When seeing a homeless person on the street will upset us as much as ourselves being homeless.

God I can't wait until we evolve out of this materialistic, selfish stage of the world.

What is coming next is a more heart centred , compassionate Earth - where we all care about each other a lot more

vulvachips · 11/06/2020 16:48

people having plastic surgery & injectable to look like androgynous sex dolls.

theonlywayisapple · 11/06/2020 16:54

Labour had fucked many people up. I’m far better under Tory and I’m far from rich and have a disabled son. I won’t ever vote Labour. They’ll destroy this country if they ever get back in

vulvachips · 11/06/2020 16:56

@Annamaria14 I think society has become more materialistic & selfish. Even if everyone is housed some will want the biggest house.

Someone pointed out on another thread how we are currently judging how the UK became a "super power" & it's problematic history. However we are still asserting that dominance today. People want cheap clothes, food & products & turn an eye to those that have to produce them. People want to fly & have goods flown even though climate change has a bigger impact on poorer countries.

Someone upthread slavery still exists & they are right.

Is it possible for us to have everything we want as a country & on a personal level without affecting someone else negatively?

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 16:59

@theonlywayisapple how do you make a prisoner believe that they are free?

Let them vote for their choice of person that controls them.

There is no need for governments at all. I am astounded at people who think there is no possible alternative than having a government ruling over a country. When there are countless examples of governments being corrupt

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 11/06/2020 17:00

Gosh I feel awful now. I've never bothered buying clothes for my peanuts. I didn't even know that people did that. I just left them in their shells until I was going to eat them Grin

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 17:01

@vulvachips we could have a system where everyone is given the same size small house for free. That everyone is entitled to basic shelter. Then if people want a bigger house, they can still work and earn money and get a bigger house.

But that everyone is entitled to a basic house
