To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

Throwing billions of disposable nappies away every year.

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/06/2020 14:49

Eating meat, and the arguments we use to justify why its okay to kill animals when we don't need to.

Controlled crying.
Putting the elderly into 'care' homes.

Failing to act on the need for climate change
Cheap, throw away culture

Enderthedragon · 11/06/2020 14:53

Chemotherapy

Telling children that they can change sex and experimenting on them with untested drugs.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 11/06/2020 14:54

In my opinion, our grandchildren will think we were morally bankrupt for choosing to eat meat and dairy.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 11/06/2020 14:56

Eating meat

Pepperwort · 11/06/2020 14:57

I've got a twin prediction. Either we will be appalled by the concept of private landlording, or we will be appalled by the acceptance of financially poor people being permitted to walk on the same street as richer. We'll want tunnels built to keep the poor out of sight of the beautiful people.

Boredbumhead · 11/06/2020 14:59

Keeping immigrant kids in cages separately from their family in America. How we let refugees drown or starve in camps. Wars in Syria and the middle east. Factory farming and the horrible treatment of animals as part of a food chain. The unregulated wrecking of the environment. The social polarisation of the rich and poor. The glass cliff many women get pushed of still. The greediness of mindless consumerism and capitalism.

........
I agree with that.

Privacy will be seen as obscene. It will be considered shocking that at some point we allowed rape and murder to take place because we were scared of being filmed or recorded. Objecting to having your DNA on record? Why would you do that unless you wanted to commit horrible crimes?

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 11/06/2020 15:01

Penalising entire groups of people when one does something wrong.

As in expecting every Muslim to explain, terrorist attacks and labelling all Muslims as potential child groomers.

We wouldn't force every middle aged, fat white bloke to apologise for the crimes of a few so why do we do it to minorities ? 🧐

Boredbumhead · 11/06/2020 15:01

@Enderthedragon

Chemotherapy and much of modern medicine I bet

This thread sounds like the future is going to be some sort of utopia.
I'm not convinced tbh.

Absolutely agree with this. Much as I’d like to think that society will see the light with regard to things like misogyny, easy availability of extreme porn, the narcissism and authoritarianism of social media, etc, realistically this things are all becoming demonstrably worse. And - crucially - they are often touted as progressive by those who practice them.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 11/06/2020 15:03

And definitely the trans issues.......... They'll be asking what the fuck we were playing at allowing such young children to play Frankenstein with their still developing bodies. 🤨😳

Exactly.

I don’t see cruelty being on the decrease.

Single use plastics. Going on public transport without facemasks. Commuting 5 days a week to an office to do a job that can be done from home.

Voting Tory I would have thought, unless they seriously change their game in the future.

Xenia · 11/06/2020 15:15

Or voting Labour and the idea socialism was actually something people thought might work!

LaurieMarlow · 11/06/2020 15:17

Treatment of animals across the board
The sex industry
Surrogacy
Treatment of carers in society
