To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

something that is completely taken for granted like eating meat or not allowing children to vote

There are already groups who are campaigning for the 'rights' of 'consenting' children to be allowed to be sexually abused by adults (they don't phrase it that way). Horrifying.

Kazzyhoward · 11/06/2020 14:13

Excessive use of plastic and not disposing of properly.

Allowing the obesity epidemic by stupid "big is beautiful" acceptance.

DisobedientHamster · 11/06/2020 14:13

Hopefully, male violence towards females.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 11/06/2020 14:14

Puberty blockers
Life changing cross sex hormones being given to young people - ditto binders and (ugh) packers
Men getting prizes and positions meant for women
The rise in misogyny
Women's rights being rolled back

Jaxhog · 11/06/2020 14:14

Our lack of care for older and disabled people.
Our obsession with 'me'
Our lack of technical skills (or appreciation for them)
Antibiotic overuse
Excessive cheap holidays overseas, without appreciating the culture of the country we visit
Lack of language skills
How females are treated in some societies
Ocean pollution

StarintheMorning · 11/06/2020 14:14

Drag (or what will be known as Woman Face, seen as bad as the Black and White minstrels)
Rolling back women’s rights
Pushing car use rather than public transport
Nuclear everything
Giving young children off label drugs to stop puberty.
Cutting off girls breast (as happens in USA from age 12) will be considered same as FGM

Giving up hard-won freedoms to the State.

One day people will wake up and think: How the fuck did they let this happen? As every aspect of their lives is overseen by the State.
It's already happening now: CCTV, automatic face recognition, automatic number plate recognition, tracking credit card payments, listening in to phone calls, everything we ever post on the Internet (including this post) being recorded and traceable.

Excellent thread! Very thought provoking answers too.

Agree with environment and packaging.

Agree with sweatshops.

Don't agree with shutting down economy or schools shutting. I think another pandemic in 100 years they would at 2020 the same way we've looked at 1918. They'll see the mistakes then as we do now. But I would hope in future people will look at this pandemic and the resulting issues and be empathetic to what we had to do.

DemolitionBarbie · 11/06/2020 14:16

Cars.

Making kids stay in because of the threat from paedophiles.

Brexit.

Factory farming.

All the trans stuff will seem like quaint moral outrage, like old fashioned homophobia.

Crystaltree · 11/06/2020 14:17

Male circumcision seen as another form of GM based on medieval notions.
Body positivity overwhelming debates on health.
Smoking skunk

Crystaltree · 11/06/2020 14:18

Constant need for validation and for people to know what you are doing at all times, coupled with whingeing about state surveillance.

I worry that there won't be any "people's" history, only official records. How much of what we know about our past comes from the discovery of letters and diaries which are all done electronically now and will be lost as the technology they're stored on becomes obsolete?

I think you may well be on to something there. Not just 'lost' to obsolete technology, but altered to suit the current agenda e.g. "I can assure you and indeed 'prove' that we have ALWAYS been at war with Oceania". Something written on paper can be preserved/copied forever by absolutely anybody but something online can be removed or altered at the touch of a button. Even if others have kept cached copies of the original, if 'the official' website says differently, then anything differing from that 'must have been maliciously counterfeited'.

Even with things like music and films/TV nowadays, there's a whole generation who can't possibly see why anybody would want to buy a copy in perpetuity when you can rent or subscribe to it from a central 'bank' whenever you want - for as long as the owners allow it. I'm not saying that the current Little Britain decision is a bad thing, but in principle, it means that anybody who had it on a DVD can still watch it and copy it whereas anybody relying on streaming it cannot potentially ever again. That could just as easily apply to anything embarrassing or politically inexpedient.

Plastic
Pollution
Throwaway society
Selfies/Instagram/Social Media generally

That's if future generations are here to judge. With the way the planet's going it's unlikely to be honest.

Obvious things, transphobia, homophobia, racism.
The way that mental health is treated both by individuals and the health system.
The design of the Fiat Multipla.

Environmental issues, not taking radical enough steps to save our planet
Not banning smoking
Transphobia
Mental illness not being on a par with physical illness in terms of funding and resources

AnneBullen · 11/06/2020 14:29

I don’t think it’ll be anything obvious to us now.

My best guess is that our descendants will be disgusted and horrified that we lived in skin bags filled with fluids and poo that needed regular maintenance rather than just uploading our consciousness to a database.

I don’t think there will ever be a real desire to eliminate wealth inequality.

maddening · 11/06/2020 14:29
