I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

Did you get the right picalilli? I loved it as a child, bought some and was horrified, then realised that I had got a sweet version and was missing the mustardy goodness, so my memory was right, but the picalilli was wrong!

TravellingInTheTardis · 11/06/2020 11:24

Yep, I watched Sapphire & Steel last night. I used to like it when I was little, but it was incomprehensible garbage! Same thing happened with Blake's Seven. Childhood memories trashed forever!

99 cones. Always begged my parents for one at the icecream van, but now the taste and texture make me feel ill and I hate buying them for my DC!

BendingSpoons · 11/06/2020 11:35

As teenagers we thought the Harvester was amazing, massive bowls of 'salad' plus your meal. Took DCs there about 6 months ago and was disappointed. What was worse was DH had been sceptical beforehand!

Yeah it's the right one. I wish it wasn't Grin

Sorry that was meant to be a post about old 80's films too

@maybemaybeII I still love them but not with the whippy ice cream.

There's a few things I've tried as a child because of remembering I loved it as a child. They just never taste the same. I don't know wether it's because your tastes change as you get older, or the products have changed.

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 11/06/2020 16:33

@BendingSpoons Smilewe've avoided ours for years after a terrible meal right up until last year when we took the kids and it was actually pretty good!

I still love Sapphire and Steel! (And it still scares the shit out of me at times - remember the one where Sapphire got trapped in a photograph?)

Wagon Wheels....I'll leave it there..

Sad [angry Hmm

YY to 1980s TV. You Tube isn't my friend, it shatters my childhood.

lifestooshort123 · 11/06/2020 16:42

Butterscotch Angel Delight - it was such a treat in the 60s (with Dream Topping, yum) but we had it last year and it was bleh... 😔

NeutralJanet · 11/06/2020 16:43

I bought a bag full of Icy Cups from the pound shop, you know those little chocolate sweets in a foil cup that you get in a 10p mix. Used to love them in a mix up, the ones I bought were not good.

Emmapeeler1 · 11/06/2020 16:45

Try it with Branston pickle instead. Lovely. Well, it was in 1992 Wink

BarkandCheese · 11/06/2020 16:52

Rebbeca’s World. It’s a short children’s novel by one of the Dr Who writers from the 70s. It was my favourite book when I was around 9 and I remembered it as being this amazing, transportive fantasy. It’s out of print so when DD was of an age to enjoy it I paid about £15 for a second hand copy and read it to her. It wasn’t that good, it was okay but the whole thing was kind of strange and disjointed and honestly a bit disturbing, especially the illustrations which are very much of their time.

Crystaltree · 11/06/2020 17:09

A lot of things have had the vast amount of sugar and salt they used to contain reduced. I had lunch in a hospital canteen not long ago and I was beyond excited to see they had Spotted Dick and Custard. I took a bite and it was like a bath sponge with yellow flour and water poured over. Some things are better phased out than ruined.

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 11/06/2020 17:11

Maybe it the lessening of sugar and salt in our diets?
I loved a good cheese hamwich back in the day.....

I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch bit it’s actually terrible Grin

Livedandlearned · 11/06/2020 17:13

I can imagine what a disappointment the icy cups were, I used to love them too but I bet now the chocolate has changed.

bearlyactive · 11/06/2020 17:17

OMG Ice Cups, I miss them! Well, I did until I read this thread and realised that I'd probably be disappointed now Grin

BendingSpoons · 11/06/2020 17:44

Ijust maybe we will have to give the Harvester another go, although I don't think DH will be keen!

22Giraffes · 11/06/2020 17:58

I loved Icy Cups!! They were 3p in my corner shop as a kid Grin back when penny sweets existed. Running to the shop with my 20p was a real treat of my childhood!

iklboo · 11/06/2020 17:59

We went to a Harvester last year. It was awful. Dried out burned chicken, solid jacket potato. We had to send it back. Who sends a Harvester back?!

WinnieWonder · 11/06/2020 18:02

The reason Angel Delight and instant whip used to taste so good in the late 70s and early 80s were because they were usually divided between 6 people minimum so you got about 150 mls each. Of course it seemed lovely!
