I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

Pot Noodles, the chicken and mushroom one. I wasn’t allowed to eat them when I was wee and they were my most favourite - they’re awful now, bland and cardboard-y.

And yes to the PP who said Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I absolutely loved that show so was happy to see it was being re-run. It’s a total load of shite 😂

Fifteen years ago, or thereabouts, my sister and I took a trip back in time with our DHs to visit our maternal grandparents house, last seen when I was 10.
All the way there she and I were reminiscing about the house, how big it was etc.
We got there and it was a very ordinary 60s end of terrace and so small! I felt quite embarrassed about our boasting TBH!

On the food front - I have been mentally tasting Arctic Roll for weeks but, having read this thread, I might give it a miss.

WanderingMilly · 11/06/2020 19:35

To be honest, modern day foods have changed as well, it may not be your memory.

Wagon wheels aren't the same recipe as they used to be. I also remember how wonderful malt loaf was, todays version (same brand) is now a disgusting brown mess, not the same as the dark slices with air bubbles and whole fruit pieces it used to be.

Hugsgalore · 11/06/2020 19:37

Lilt

MikeUniformMike · 11/06/2020 19:40

I never 'got' salted caramel. I like salt, I like caramel, but not at the same time.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 11/06/2020 19:41

I used to play a platform game on my Amiga 500 (showing my age here!) called Kid Gloves. My husband very kindly downloaded it for my birthday recently so that we could play it.

I can honestly say it is the shittest most annoying game with the worst graphics. Yet I loved it as a child!

Silvercatowner · 11/06/2020 19:41

@TravellingInTheTardis

Where are you watching Sapphire and Steel??

Guttersnipe · 11/06/2020 19:47
@Guttersnipe

Did you maybe buy the smooth version? Branston pickle have a smooth version and the original version.
No. Embarrassingly, it is still in my fridge (expiry date Nov 2017!) And it is the one with lumps, called Branston Original, but the lumps arent as crispy crunchy as I remember them and the flavour has definitely changed. It has way more spice in it than it used to.

Chicken Lokshen. For ages I thought it was because I couldn't lay my hands on a kosher chicken; then I realised it was the giblets.

I have a v fond recollection of tinned spag bol. A treat at grannies. Double ended tin - sloppy spag at one end; synthetic bol at the other but how I loved it. Imagine it's vile.

Frozen raspberry mousse turned out of a pretty plastic mould.

M&S tinned chicken in white wine - served in frozen vol au ven't cases.

Pate in big China bowls from the deli.

Tinned lobster bisque with a glass of sherry and swirl of double cream

Chinese leaves in winter salad.

Blancmange from moulds called "shape"

Artic roll and tinned peaches or fruit salad - the soft grape in tinned fruit salad.

Whipped carnations milk

Aspic covering poached or mousse things.

1960s/70s childhood :)

@PyongyangKipperbang the head thing was utter disturbing and agree about the drugs Grin

katseyes7 · 11/06/2020 19:54

@PyongYangKipperBang
@iklboo
They were awful! So soft and claggy and just dreadful.

Goldengroveunleaving · 11/06/2020 19:55

Not quite the same sort of thing, but Wuthering Heights, of all things. I was 14 when I first read it and was (like lots of others) in love with Heathcliff. I re-read it as an adult and realised that he actually is a proper psychopath, really horrific. Such a letdown.

Ravenesque · 11/06/2020 20:05

Playgrounds now have much "safer" equipment than they did in the 1980s: no tall slides and climbing frames.

I knew that the tiny slides you get these days were a lot smaller than the ones we had back in the day but I had started to convince myself that my memory of the slide in Victoria Park (Hackney/Bethnal Green) was mistaken because I was small and maybe it wasn't that tall. Then I saw some photos and I'm surprised that we all didn't die on it. I bloody loved it. I've also seen some recent photos of the playground there and I have to say it looks pretty good. Some great slides that have all the length of slide without the danger of instant death.

I had Vienetta this week. I remember when we thought it was a posh treat. It's very meh.

Teaistheanswer · 11/06/2020 20:05

I loved Pipkins when I was little so was really excited to get the dvd as a present...omg I certainly don't remember Hartley Hare looking like that! Shock he is really creepy. Happy childhood memory shattered.
Bagpuss is still lovely though Grin

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/06/2020 20:06

Spaghetti hoops, I was way too excited to crack a tin open in lockdown. Somehow felt that it was perfect lockdown comfort fodder. It really wasn’t.

mumwon · 11/06/2020 20:07

If you look on ingredients with a lot of these things
vinegar which is watered down & not nice strong spicy vinegar
sweeteners
& mustard - what else have they put in it & what have they taken out
only thing is to make your own Grin

Ginkypig · 11/06/2020 20:08

If you can believe it there are actually three versions of branston pickle now

Original (big chunk)
Small chunk
Smooth

feellikeanalien · 11/06/2020 20:17

So many of my favourites here, butterscotch angel delight and dream topping. Lilt, potato puffs.

Lilt makes me think of summer holidays on the beach in Millport. I tried some the other day and it was vile.

Same with Caramac and Fudge.

We also used to have a local bakery which sold cream buns. I don't think you can even get cream buns now. I've certainly not seen any. Mind you I'm not sure if that was just a Scottish thing.

Marlena1 · 11/06/2020 20:17

@biddybird I remember tesco having a gorgeous cherry icecream and I usually hate anything cherry flavour. May have been that?

ramarama · 11/06/2020 20:20

@PyongyangKipperbang I WILL NOT have a bad word spoken about the Breakfast Club. I rewatched it recently and think it (almost) stands up today.
So just you hush your mouth Grin

SarahAndQuack · 11/06/2020 20:32

This thread is the real reason for bringing your children up with a joyless emphasis on fresh produce and no junk (my parents in the 80s). I have discovered all my junk food as an adult and I bloody love it. Branston pickle is wonderful. Batcherlor's super noodles. Excellent. And, how yummy are hash browns? My DP is on a mission to introduce our DD to all the cherished food of her childhood, so we have Birds' custard and angel delight and old-fashioned sweets. I'm not loving all of them, but angel delight is weirdly compelling.

What I do miss is cornettos. I remember them being amazing, really creamy and delicious and with super-crisp chocolate in the bottom. Tried them again and they were meh, and oddly salty.

Haffiana · 11/06/2020 20:33

Heinz potato salad in a tin. The other tinned mixed salad (potato with peas and carrots I think) also made by Heinz whose name I can't remember.

They don't make them any more, but I had a proper traditional Russian Salad made for me by a Russian friend recently, and it was identical to that Heinz stuff. And actually really good.

petrocellihouse · 11/06/2020 20:37

Babycham! I had fond memories of trying to look sophisticated as an 18 year old, drinking it out of the special Babycham coupe glasses which featured a leaping deer. Managed to find some a few years ago and it tastes revolting. Ah well...

cushioncovers · 11/06/2020 20:49

Artic roll

TroysMammy · 11/06/2020 20:50

Goblin tinned hamburgers in gravy. In the 70's we ate them with mashed potato and peas. They were delicious. As an adult absolutely disgusting.

However I love Pek tinned pork in sandwiches or with chips, that hasn't changed one bit from my childhood.
