I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 11/06/2020 11:15

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

Plus, you were starving cos the frey bentos pie was divided between six as well, with Dad getting the biggest bit.

namechangenumber204 · 11/06/2020 18:06

Caramac. I used to be able to eat it by the bucketload, had one the other day and it was so revolting I didn't finish it. Which is a first, me not finishing a bar of chocolate! It was sooooooooo sweet and disgustingly sickly. Confused

Spanglebangle · 11/06/2020 18:07

The recipes have changed and all the delicious e numbers removed. Angry

sleepyhead · 11/06/2020 18:08

My brother and I were talking about how we used to sneak squares of Scotbloc cooking "chocolate" when we were kids.

I think it's safe to say that it's our tastes that have changed and Scotbloc was always objectively disgusting.

Livedandlearned · 11/06/2020 18:09

@22Giraffes did you always put 20p worth in the bag or sneak in an extra one or two?

Guttersnipe · 11/06/2020 18:10

@Emmapeeler1

Try it with Branston pickle instead. Lovely. Well, it was in 1992 Wink
Nope. I came on here specifically to tell of the time I bought Branston pickle as I hadn't had it in probably at least 10 years. It was horrid! No big chunks and a ton more spice than it used to have. It is either at the back of my fridge several years later, or I chucked it, I forget which. Utterly inedible.
loubieloo4 · 11/06/2020 18:11

I am currently working my way through a jar of 200 icy cups from amazon, they taste just the same as I remember 😋

Cam2020 · 11/06/2020 18:14

Point Horror books were my tween obsession in the early 90s - they have not aged well or read well as an adult Blush

22Giraffes · 11/06/2020 18:17

@Livedandlearned the shop had clear trays so the shopkeeper could count before putting them in a bag for you 😒

@loubieloo4 so jealous!!

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2020 18:20

Children have twice the number of taste buds compared to adults and all the recipes have changed. We don't stand a chance.

It's like Burton's Fish and Chips. All wrong. I am torn between them wanting them to bring back Potato Puffs and accepting that they just wouldn't taste the same.

Don't try raspberry ripple frozen mousses BTW. They're not the same either.

moreofthegreenstuff · 11/06/2020 18:24

raspberry ripple frozen mousses OMG do they still make them? I haven't had one for about 40 years...

BertieBotts · 11/06/2020 18:25

I used to love Starbucks caramel macciato. I would get it once a week as a treat on my way to my first job. I had to do something nasty and medical a couple of years ago so I bought myself one (hideously expensive!) as a treat afterwards for being brave. It was disgusting! I couldn't even finish it. So sweet and no coffee taste Confused

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/06/2020 18:28

Yes- anyone remember sandwich spread? I used to love that as a kid. Found some the other day and it looked and tasted like literal vomit - I guess my taste buds must have been different back then!

Witchofzog · 11/06/2020 18:30

Trio. Triiiiiiiooòooo. They used to be so chocolatey and a bit gooey. They are just a bit meh now. Nice but not amazing.

Ulysses the cartoon. My god I loved it. I even fancied Ulysses Blush It was nowhere near as good as I remember sadly

BobbieDraper · 11/06/2020 18:30

@Guttersnipe

Did you maybe buy the smooth version? Branston pickle have a smooth version and the original version.

biddybird · 11/06/2020 18:30

Yes, with just about everything I remember as being "great".

Tastes change, as do the products! Not a good combination for happy trips down memory lane.

sayanythingelse · 11/06/2020 18:32

@Raella50

I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch bit it’s actually terrible Grin
Noo, how dare you! Sabrina is amazing, especially Salem Grin

I know what you mean though OP. I used to love those frozen packets of fish in butter sauce with potatoes when I was a kid. I tried them again years later as an adult and they're bloody vile! Shame on my parents for letting me eat such crap.

biddybird · 11/06/2020 18:33

On that subject, I once (approx 22 yrs ago) had a chocolate and cherry ice cream that I remember as being the most divine thing I had ever tasted. It was a major UK supermarket brand, possibly Somerfield or Asda (somewhere I don't usually shop). Does anyone remember this? If so pleeeeease tell me what it is/was so I may seek it out again!

Chig · 11/06/2020 18:34

Sugar puffs. I had a craving for them whilst pregnant with DS. Tasted like bits of cardboard. Avoid at all costs.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/06/2020 18:35

Wurzel Gummidge.

I loved it as a kid but didnt make it through the first episode as an adult before it freaked me the fuck out! How the hell I wasnt bloody terrified as a 6 year old (ish) I dont know!

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/06/2020 18:37

Macaroons. I gave in the other day and bought a pack. The chocolate tasted greasy, they practically melted in my mouth and there was none of that lovely 'finding bits of coconut stuck in the back of your teeth some hours later'. It was like the coconut was all mashed up, not dessicated.

I was disappointed.

Echobelly · 11/06/2020 18:38

I tried Findus Crispy Pancakes years later after loving them as a child.... vile!

WoollyMollyMonkey · 11/06/2020 18:43

They’ve probably changed the recipe. My heart sinks whenever I see “New improved recipe” printed on a product I love as I just know they’ve bloody gone and ruined it!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/06/2020 18:45

@sayanythingelse those frozen fish in butter sauce packs are quite useful kept in for making an emergency fish pie when you're skint!

Emmapeeler1 · 11/06/2020 18:48

@PyongyangKipperbang it was properly freaky wasn't it? Try the new version on CBBC. It's hilarious and lovely.
