I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

Ulysses and Knightmare, loved them as a kid, now they just seem dated and silly. We all loved the cartoon version of Dungeons and dragons.

They took away the delicious E numbers, yeah some kid possibly went blind but why do we all have to suffer. The minute you see ‘improved’ you know that’s a lie...cheaper and crapper. They are ducking about with beetroot and putting the crinkle cut stuff in ‘sweet’ malt vinegar, it tastes like someone’s stirred in a spoon of caster sugar 🤢

Remember Toast Toppers that came in a wee tin....they were great but I bet they’d taste shite now.

HazelBite · 11/06/2020 20:56

@biddybird I believe it was from Iceland, it was delicious!

When I was pregnant I craved Feast lollies and had everyone on high alert for them. A few weeks later a friend dropped off eight of them. I was made up. Until I tried one! It was tiny and tasted really synthetic. The friend asked a few times if I was enjoying them and I had to lie!

Club biscuits used to have a thick layer of real chocolate, it even said in the advert ‘if you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our club’...
They’d be done under the trade descriptions act for that now 🤨

Still like a ham and mushroom toast topper
rosegoldwatcher · 11/06/2020 21:07

@cushioncovers - yes I feared so. Did you actually try it recently?

RideaCockHorseOfCourse · 11/06/2020 21:18

I was so excited to see a run of "Happy Days" with The Fonz on a digital channel a while back. As young teenagers we used to watch it on a Saturday tea time, go out afterwards, and swan about saying "Hey" in true Fonzarelli style. I settled down to watch it, but couldn't stand to watch more than 5 mins. Such a load of shite ! Adult tastes change somewhat!!!

TheGoodDinosaur · 11/06/2020 21:27

My mum used to do baked potatoes, scoop out the potato insides, mix with corned beef and onion, back in the skin, top with cheese and put under the grill. Heaven.
I made them a few weeks ago, first time in around 30 years I've had them and they were utterly vile. An abomination. All pink and soft. Envy

tobee · 11/06/2020 21:29

Golden Nuggets. So happy when they relaunched them. Bought a packet ☹️

I love Ivor the Engine still. But Pipkins always absolutely scared me witless. But I watched it religiously! Confused

480Widdio · 11/06/2020 21:32

Heinz Sandwich Spread, when I was a Staff Nurse many years ago we always had it on toast at coffee time.

Bought some recently,I was so excited, yuck it tasted vile, really vinegary, just awful.

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 11/06/2020 21:33

@thebear1 Arctic roll. I had really gone overboard to the dc about how amazing it was, especially with chocolate sauce. It was a disappointment.
As a child as primary school they served the infants and then the juniors. The Arctic roll was always gone before us juniors lined up. Devastated!

With baked potatoes my sister and I would scoop out the middle, mash it up with the brains faggots (and some of the gravy) my mother made us eat and then put it under the grill with cheese.

We both still love these! Sloppy and messy and delish!

My parents cat ended up looking like Salem. He was 22 at the time Grin

I watched an episode of Pidgeon Street on youtube once.Ruined my 80s kid memories.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/06/2020 21:37

@tobee

I think we watched whatever was on because there was bog all else! We had what...? About half an hour of kids TV at lunch time and an hour and a half at tea time. I was still watching Rainbow at lunchtime when I was at secondary school :o

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/06/2020 21:39

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/06/2020 21:45

80s horror.Nightmare on elm street is not scary and neither is friday the 13th or Halloween

The80sweregreat · 11/06/2020 21:46

Lots of foods have been messed about with or less sugar or smaller than I remember so I have given up with the nostalgia 😀
Most things are disappointing as you age.

strugglingwithdeciding · 11/06/2020 21:51

I was also positive that wagon wheels always had jam in them and you didn't have to buy the jam ones ( maybe my mum just did ) plus they were huge , I know my hands were smaller but still

Cam2020 · 11/06/2020 21:52

@PrincessHoneysuckle @IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone I got a couple from Amazon in a moment of nostalgia. Kind of funny (accidentally), cringey, but definitely not the thrilling read I once thought they were. I'm 39! Grin
