I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

I remember fruit yoghurt tasting much better than the sweet shit you get now I used to love ski

HavelockVetinari · 13/06/2020 11:44

Blackpool. Insisted to DH that we go there, as I remembered it fondly from childhood - it was a run-down, shabby mess, and poor DH was racially abused in a pub. The reality certainly didn't match the memory, we'll take DS to Alton Towers instead!

IShineAShoe · 13/06/2020 12:04

I bought some potato waffles recently. I have the fondest memories of mum making them with beans and nuggets for a midweek meal. What happened to them? The taste is utterly vile and strangely chemical.

NeutralJanet · 13/06/2020 14:26

I still love Blackpool, we had a week there last summer and it was great. Racial abuse isn't good though, sorry your DH had to hear that.

Queenofcrime · 13/06/2020 14:44

@Housemum

Do you think Proust ever ate a Madeleine and thought, “nah, not how I remembered it at all”?!
😂
MuseumOfYou · 13/06/2020 15:03

The reason Angel Delight and instant whip used to taste so good in the late 70s and early 80s were because they were usually divided between 6 people minimum so you got about 150 mls each. Of course it seemed lovely!

This definitely, I think it was probably about a dessertspoons worth. There were 6 of us!

My first teenage boyfriend's mum gave us a packet between two of us; I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

biddybird · 13/06/2020 17:30

@Cotswoldmama This one was almost the exact opposite of Cherry Garcia—the ice cream was chocolate and it had a swirl/ripple of some kind of cherry "sauce" in it.
There seems to be a lot of the other type around (e.g., cherry ice cream with chocolate chips).

biddybird · 13/06/2020 17:32

@fishbiscuits The description matches! I'm going to have to try this one! Thank you!
Even if it's not the exact same brand, it sounds very close.
There's a Morrisons in my town too. (:-)

biddybird · 13/06/2020 17:34

@Fbearsmum Yeah, I agree—I'm not a big fan of Ben & Jerry's.

biddybird · 13/06/2020 17:44

Rats! Morrisons doesn't stock it anymore. Sad

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 13/06/2020 17:54

As kids we loved these but I think it was more about the pots than the flavours!
Fiendish feet.

Another Wagon Wheel mourner here...... tried one when my DS was small and was outraged - not sure they are made with any real ingredients now tbh......

Still enjoy Fray Bentos though - we tried one a few months ago and the pastry is the bit that does it for us...

Armchair Thriller used to freak me out too - one particular episode was about a little girl about my age at the time = 8 or 9 - going to stay with her Dad after not seeing him for a while. But someone had murdered him and was pretending to be him. The main thing for me was that my parents were recently divorced and the Dad had thick black rimmed glasses and a roll neck and hairstyle similar to my Dad...... was very jittery for a while about that....

And what happened to Ski fruit mousses in the waxed pot? Those were gorgeous...... think I'll keep that memory sacred if they bring out a new version.......

Two of my student staples were Poor Mans Carbonara - super noodles, wafer thin ham and cream and black pepper essentially, and a dish that comprised bacon, mushrooms, onions, sweetcorn, butterbeans and tinned (had to be tinned) bolied potatoes fried up together with a dash of cream...... both have surprisingly stood the test of 30 years...... but are very occasional indulgences because if I ate them regularly now I may as just apply them direct to my middle aged tum and hips......

I also remember my Aunt preventing me from having a chocolate mousse dessert at an expensive Edinburgh restaurant when I was a young teen because it contained alcohol. I have always wondered if it would have been the stuff of my dreams.......

I watched Supertramp sing Give A Little Bit recently, the first time I’d listened to the song in years. That sense of joy and excitement I used to feel when hearing it had gone.
And what about perfect restaurant experiences? My DH used to say let’s not revisit in case it doesn’t live up to the first time.. Well, the lockdown’s taken care of that dilemma.

InTheCludgie · 13/06/2020 21:34

@cam2020 I have recently been rereading Point Horror, reliving my early teens. Will agree the likes of The Babysitter is utter shit but Trick or Treat is still quite readable Smile

Cam2020 · 13/06/2020 21:48

@InTheCludgie Trick or Treat was the first one I ever read! Should probably have revisited with something that came out before RL Stine's domination.

Fiendish Feet! I loved those!!

Maxstress3 · 14/06/2020 15:03

Arctic roll
Choc ice
Oyster (from the ice cream van) got it not so long ago and was just soggy and horrible
Cheese puffs - was addicted to these as a child don't taste the same

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 14/06/2020 22:59

I love choc ices but I'm always disappointed when I actually have one!

I think we were all a lot less well fed with narrower culinary experience back in the 70s and 80s so stuff was much much more of a treat.

My DS will knock up an Angel Delight as a passing snack, for me in 1975 Angel Delight at my Granny’s was like champagne

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/06/2020 23:40

Corned beef and salad cream was my 80’s sandwich, I’m a bit more discerning now and have mayonnaise instead, and the corned beef isn’t tinned. Mind you my ultimate favourite was marmite and cucumber, the 80’s was an odd time.

Doodar · 15/06/2020 00:10

Those boxes of dried marrow fat peas, wonder if they’re still available?

Doodar · 15/06/2020 00:11

Potted meat

Doodar · 15/06/2020 00:13

Lemon curd sandwiches
Ketchup sandwiches
Salad cream and crushed crisp sandwich
Salmon paste

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 15/06/2020 09:10

@Doodar Those boxes of dried marrow fat peas, wonder if they’re still available?
They are.
