Appears not to be trending on Twitter, despite the huge number of tweets in response to J K Rowling's tweet.

AIBU to think that Twitter is a bunch of fiddling, dishonest cheats?

TheGreatWave · 10/06/2020 21:26

Just to clarify - you do all know that sex and gender are two different concepts entirely.. right?

I do - do you?

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 10/06/2020 21:30

@TheGreatWave so can you explain why you are so against trans rights?

buildingbridge · 10/06/2020 21:31

Ah, look at all the men, having made money out of a woman

Yesssss 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. This is what I was thinking! Idiots.

digbee · 10/06/2020 21:35

No-one here is against trans rights. We are pro women's rights to single sex spaces for reasons of privacy, dignity, safety, and fairness.

feelingverylazytoday · 10/06/2020 21:36

@amijustparanoidorjuststoned

So what you're saying is that most of you are transphobic?

Not all vaginas belong to women, and not all women have vaginas.

Yeah sure hun 😂
amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 10/06/2020 21:37

@digbee who on earth said women weren't entitled to these spaces to feel safe?

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 10/06/2020 21:38

@feelingverylazytoday too lazy to educate yourself, I see Grin

Eminybob · 10/06/2020 21:38

Biologically, some people are born in the wrong bodies

No, they’re not. Some people are born and have a personality which is different to the stereotype of their sex, and therefore believe they should have been the other sex.

You can’t be “born in the wrong body” and I absolutely despair that otherwise intelligent people believe this.

RoosterPie · 10/06/2020 21:38
@TheGreatWave EXACTLY. I was just giving one example.

So your daughter, who identifies as a male, may not ever have surgery.

So in her eyes, she is a man. But she/he has a vagina.

Obviously the correct pronouns would be "him/he" at this point, but I hope you all get the picture!
I understand that and would have no issue using those pronouns and doing my best to be respectful of this person’s identity.

But it is irrelevant to JK Rowling’s point. Her point is that identity is all very well and she respects that people should live as they choose, but not at the expense of it being wrong for women to talk about the consequences of their sex which they cannot identify out of.

Does that make sense?

Bottleup · 10/06/2020 21:39

JK Rowling is a phenomenal woman. We and our daughters owe her a debt of gratitude for being so brave in these frightening times.

RoosterPie · 10/06/2020 21:40

Also I believe saying a trans person was “born in the wrong body” is considered transphobic these days. Careful who you align yourself with amijustparanoid because they will come for you too.

digbee · 10/06/2020 21:43

amij sex and gender are different, as I'm sure you know.

As soon as transwomen are allowed in women's spaces, they become mixed sex, not single sex. It is often argued that this is legally required (it isn't) and that it should include a wide spectrum of transgender individuals.

nothingcomestonothing · 10/06/2020 21:45

#IstandwithJKR

I don't understand how anyone can look at what she actually said, then look at the avalanche of replies threatening sexual violence, and conclude that JKR is the wrong headed one.

I am so, so sick of MRAs trying to shut down any discussion about the intersection of women's rights and trans rights. Anyone who doesn't believe what you've decided we should, because y'know, feelz, is a bigot and deserves to be raped, and JKR is the one in the wrong. I genuinely despair sometimes Angry

titchy · 10/06/2020 21:47

who on earth said women weren't entitled to these spaces to feel safe?

Err pretty much every trans activist says that. That's exactly what their purpose is. Hmm

NotTerfNorCis · 10/06/2020 21:47

Twitter is totally biased in favour of the TRAs. They are acting like utter shits. I know people say JK doesn't have anything to lose, but no one should be facing that kind of hatestorm for expressing simple truths.

feelingverylazytoday · 10/06/2020 21:48
@feelingverylazytoday too lazy to educate yourself, I see Grin
Well, at least I'm educated enough to know that vaginas are female reproductive organs, and therefore only female people, ie girls/women can have them.
Did you skive off on biology days or something?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 10/06/2020 21:48

I read through her essay and what she posted on Twitter - none of it seems incredibly 'wrong' or damning of trans rights - essentially I interpreted it as JKR saying women's rights can't and shouldn't be erased in order to make way for trans rights. If that's how she intended it, I'm ok with that. I believe trans rights should be honoured. Just not at the expense of any other rights.

She must have the hide of a rhino to stay chipper throughout the abuse she's now receiving.

Langsdestiny · 10/06/2020 21:49

I stand with her. We need to email and support her.

snowpony · 10/06/2020 21:51

People can live as they want, be called what they want. But the point is that women have suffered discrimination and abuse because of their biological sex since the beginning of time. Legal protections and measures are in place to redress this, and not yet have created an equal world for us. This is JKR’s point. She’s just asking for the other side of the argument to be evaluated. Why is that wrong?

Andthenthenewone · 10/06/2020 21:51

I 💖 JK Rowling.

queenjaneappro · 10/06/2020 21:52

I think that the body shop thought they might be applauded for having a tweet that went viral like the 'solidaritea' one.
Hopefully by the response they are getting this has spectacularly backfired.

Istandwithjkr is trending at number 1 now on twitter but if you read the comments she is still
getting a lot of hate and people are retweeting it disagreeing.

I thought her essay was brilliant and helped me understand the complex issues.

Andthenthenewone · 10/06/2020 21:53

amijustparanoidorjuststoned
I think you are both paranoid and stoned.

Bluewater1 · 10/06/2020 21:55

I don't stand with her

dooble · 10/06/2020 21:55

I'd like to know too?

Twistedinknots · 10/06/2020 21:55

Glad to see such support of JKR here.

Sometimes it seems like MN is the only place to see common sense in this area (worrying, no!?)

Its a shame so many women have been forced to hide behind her due to fear of repercussions.
