@PatricksRum

Would you say that all deaths of black people at the hands of white people were racially motivated, and vise versa? Nope. And nope.
Are many black people murdered by white people in racially motivated attacks in this country?

I have Googled but can only find general statistics to March 2019.

Hi, not sure if someone has posted about Travellers/ Gypsies. I have long debated this in my mind growing up, however I came across an article which I quite enjoyed that described the experiences and coping mechanisms of Travelling children within schools/education. It was called ‘Fight, Flight or Playing White’ Now as a Travelling little girl in primary school I survived by ‘playing white’ I would put on the English accent at school, would not refer to myself as a Traveller. When I moved into secondary school I must say I survived mostly by fighting (physically and verbally) against others pupils and teachers who had something to say about my ethnicity group- far too many incidents to even talk about, it was a daily/weekly occurrence. Many of my family/ cousins simply left school (flight) I can most definitely assure you other Travellers experience severe discrimination on a daily basis and I would go as far as saying it is much more socially acceptable to have these discriminatory views on Travellers than any other ethnicity group/religion.

Similarly to those of black ethnic groups, Travellers also have some of the worst educational outcomes, lower life expectancies, high infant mortality rate and disproportionately represented in the prison system. My uncle was killed whilst in police custody (he had not committed any crime apart from singing too loud on the way home from the pub)
However we do sometimes have the option to play white and deny our identity, not speak our language and forget our history. This is of course in England where we are not so Identifiable (in Ireland they can sniff out a Traveller from a mile away)

What are your thoughts on this?

Yes. 1 person is many.

@4xmum1 I'd be appreciative if you could read the last few pages. It's a debate shout travellers and I'm really glad to hear your opinion that you can "play white", "plsy down your ethnicity" etc in order to not be identified.
You shouldn't have to do this obviously but the point I have made is the fact you can do this means you hsve a white privilege in certain circumstances.
I agree that travellers and black people have a lot of similar suffering.
Thanks for posting.

A black person is stood in a line-up with white people.
I can pin point the black person by their face alone.

No you can’t OP, because you’ve already said you think “dark brown skin” is a feature exclusive to black people when it is not. In a line up, you’d mis-classify light skinned black people like Dreep as white and most probably, dark skinned Whites and Asians as black.
And there are light skinned black people and dark skinned White proper and Asians who are not mixed race.

Asian people can't hide their race, do they experience racism or racial prejudice?

Of course no one should have to
They experience racism as they can't hide their skin colour

Really OP. It seems you do not know that Asians have all the skin colours. From palest white to darkest black, and all the brown inbetween. Racism is not based on skin colour but race. You appear to be confusing racism with colourism.

Yes I can. I have never said it's exclusive to black people. Quite the opposite.
There are many features to identify a black person, their skin tone, their facial features, hair eyes nose, hair. Many things.
The same way you can pin point a person with albinism.

I've stated that already. I've already stated you can get Asians with the same skin tone as a black person. Read things properly. Thread three shows this.

My take on this is as follows:

-white people can experience incidental racism

-some white minorities (eg Irish, Roma, Jewish, Irish travellers, east europeans etc) experience a lot of incidental racism.

-racism agaisnt Black people tend to be very systemic and pervasive. socio-economically black people disproportionatley experience greater levels of poverty and unemployment

-black men (and women) in US risk being killed by police, black men in UK risk being stopped and searched disproportionatley by police

  • saying that whites can experience some racism does not take away from BLM and vice versa
  • both racism and racial prejudice are wrong. Both need calling out. Whoever they are directed at.
  • I support BLM. I also am on board with supporting stamping out racial injusutice agaisnt ANY group
  • I accept that racism agaisnt the black community is particuarly severe and life threatening.
  • racism and racial prejudice (still unsure as to how they are different?) are everybody's repsonsibility to challenge when they see it. I am a bit of a coward but I am working to be more bold in challenging when I see it happening.
  • If the thread title or content had been "You're white- you suffer less systemic racism than black people" I'd be on board with that. I was going to say maybe I'd be on board with "You're white- you haven't experienced systemic racism" but then am not sure about that. I would say the racism experienced by the Irish travellers in my local area is pretty systematic.
  • I can see that generally speaking, black people experience racism in a much worse way and I can understand why the OP is so frustrated and angry (as much as someoen like me (am white) can understand it. (hope that doesn't sound patronising- I don't mean it to come across that way)
  • am glad black voices are being heard. I hope things will change for them.

Apologies if the above seems inarticualte and clumsy. I am struggling with a fuzzy head due to being on a lot of mediation and insufficient sleep at the moment

PatricksRum · 08/06/2020 15:48

@imstillbreathingbarely That's fair. I can agree with the majority of your points.
Although some travellers are white in skin colour I believe they are an ethnicity in their own right.

Patrick He just sums it up doesn’t he? Sad I wanted to post those examples to counteract the “rich/powerful black person won’t be as affected by racism” narrative.

In their office in their suit, maybe. In the street when no one knows your job title? That “privilege” is gone.

PatricksRum · 08/06/2020 16:04

@AvranaKernsBestSpider
I remember when Stormzy was dressed in a suit and his neighbours called the police alleging he was breaking and entering his own home!

OP posts:
AvranaKernsBestSpider · 08/06/2020 16:13

That’s crazy! I saw in the (US) news a couple of weeks ago a black UPS worker was being accused of breaking into houses, while he was in his uniform pushing a UPS cart towards a UPS truck. That linked to another story where a woman had called the police because “a black man is wandering around the neighbourhood in a police uniform, he’s obviously trying to break in.” The police had to inform her that he was, in fact, a policeman.

It just feels relentless.

OP, your thread title is plainly wrong, white people have and do experience racism. I have read most of the threads and I think no one has mentioned that genocide of the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in the 1990s. Education is important for all of us. See

RiceBubbless · 08/06/2020 16:24

This article is also interesting about anti Italian racism in Australia. They were not white enough. I am not saying this to belittle the racism experienced by black communities, but in response to the thread title www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/11/the-secret-history-of-whiteness/

RiceBubbless · 08/06/2020 16:29

And finally, these children were walking to school in the UK in 2001. Are they white? Yes. Is it racism? 'like Alabama in the '60s' or

PatricksRum · 08/06/2020 16:32

@RiceBubbless
you've come to a thread, a fourth one. And stayed a point that was made in thread one.
I, and others, have tirelessly explained systemic racism and countered your argument. I'm not going to repeat myself again
