What is your biggest lifestyle indulgence?

Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

Fabric. I speaks a silly amount every month, but, I make all our clothes so saves on that.

harknesswitch · 16/03/2021 11:51

I use Estée Lauder face care routine which is probably my biggest indulgence.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 16/03/2021 11:52

My dog. Spend a fortune on walkers and flea treatments. Sky is also a total non essential. Other than that I’m really frugal.

Sahm101 · 16/03/2021 11:56

Good quality food.

2bazookas · 16/03/2021 11:58

Reading this thread has made me appreciate that I deserve my little guiltfree indulgences because I'm saving a fortune by never ever buying

nails

horses
boats
make up
gyms
trainers
hair dye
botox/fillers

vauxhalldiva · 16/03/2021 12:01

Nice things lots of them
Clothes my house nice cars.
Don't spend on holidays beauty treatments jewellery or gyms
But we have the income so it's not an issue
Also save a lot too.

TheAirbender · 16/03/2021 12:01

We turned a room in our house into a gym, I have a giant TV that I use for spin classes and I LOVE it.

Xenia · 16/03/2021 12:03
  1. Big house (although council tax just went up to almost £4k so it does come with downsides!)
  2. Giving a lot of money away to ex husband and to our 5 adult children for housing and paying their school fees and now university costs so they have no student loans.
  3. More personally and now I suppose just buying whatever food I like without checking the price and I am takingg 10 of us at my expense for a week's holiday in July which is not cheap. Of course might be cancelled due to CV19.

Weekly delivery of fresh flowers- makes me feel happy

Beauty treatments- lash extensions

Tal45 · 16/03/2021 12:03

Travel - oh how I miss it and going to the theatre and eating out.

BillMasen · 16/03/2021 12:05

Cars for me (male cliche). A couple of slightly impractical, quick and “flash” cars. Always been a thing of mine and I know it looks “mid life crisis” but I don’t care Smile

AintPageantMaterial · 16/03/2021 12:05

One-to-one yoga lessons and reformer Pilates. Lockdown has saved me a fortune. I will be straight back to it as soon as it’s allowed though

crochetmonkey74 · 16/03/2021 12:08

weekly therapy

Mosaic123 · 16/03/2021 12:09

A cleaner every week. Have just started again having had a year without one.

Colouringaddict · 16/03/2021 12:11

Full sugar cream soda, can’t abide the stuff with sweeteners.
Coloured pencils, have a couple of sets that are worth more than £300.
A dozen grandchildren, although they are a necessity to me more than a luxury

Thomasina79 · 16/03/2021 12:17

Wine! I’m quite sensible otherwise.

lalafafa · 16/03/2021 12:18

cleaner 3 times a week
personal trainer
luxury holidays
Restaurants
tutors for kids

HermioneMakepeace · 16/03/2021 12:19

Private school for my DC. I don’t own my own house or have a pension, but school is a priority for me.

I am all fur coat and no drawers Grin !

HazelWong · 16/03/2021 12:25

Home maintenance - we are rubbish at DIY and so outsource basically everything. When we moved house, I got someone from TaskRabbit to put together our flatpack even. We have good salaries and young children and we just cannot be arsed to do that stuff.

Alcohol - I like craft gin, DH likes whiskey, we both like nice wine.

Childcare - we spend a lot on nursery but also (pre covid) on evening babysitters.

I get the sense that the home maintenance and babysitting is considered extravagant by many people we know but I kind of think some of the things we don't have balance this out: no pets and no car.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 16/03/2021 12:25

My pool. I'm in Oz, so that's not as flash as it sounds, but my god I love it so much. I even have a pool guy, sadly he is about 60 and doesn't look like Jesse in Desperate Housewives at all. Grin. It was amazing in lockdown, and it brings me joy every time I look at it. Other things I love a lot are regular pedis (although kind of a necessity here), regular trips to the good cheese shop and my wine subscription,.

Mary46 · 16/03/2021 12:25

Great thread. Loved our holidays nights out etc. My spending now would be few coffees, mags and takeaway at wend. Not buying as much clothes as temping is quiet at moment. Want spend bit on garden this year.

DeadGood · 16/03/2021 12:27

Botox and living in the centre of town.

Confusedandshaken · 16/03/2021 12:29

So many but probably the biggest luxury (although not the most expensive) is having a cleaner and gardener even though I don't work. It's relatively inexpensive (compared with what I spent on theatre tickets pre-lockdown) and it makes my life so much happier. I can relax and enjoy my home and garden without the nagging thoughts of I ought to be washing that floor or cutting that hedge.

spiderlight · 16/03/2021 12:30

Fencing lessons for DS and travel to fencing competitions all over the country. We've missed it more than he has over lockdown! It's a great excuse for lots of little mini-breaks, usually involving a nice meal and a natter with other fencing parents, who seem to be universally lovely.

GreenShadow · 16/03/2021 12:32

This all makes me feel so cheap!
We're lucky enough to be able to afford some luxuries but I'm useless at spending money.
I don't get my hair cut/coloured (it doesn't grow/isn't grey).
I don't get nails/face etc done
I don't have a cleaner
I prefer cheap wine
We do have a cat, but at the moment no vets bills
I don't have expensive hobbies
I drive a 7 year old small car but not very much especially at the moment but even pre-lockdown (3 lots of petrol in the last year!)
No gym membership
Hate coffee. Only like tea in a proper cup/mug so no take-aways.
Don't like Waitrose - prefer Tesco
Take-Away about once a month at the most.
I buy books from charity shops or use library (sorry to all the authors out there)
We do go to occasional concerts but prefer small scale local ones than big expensive stadium type
I do like musicals but would only go about once a year.
We have one holiday a year usually though maybe the odd weekend too. I suppose we have upgraded from Self-Catering and really cheap hotels.

I really should show this thread to DH - don't think he has any idea what good value I am!!
