Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

I don't budget with food, just buy what I fancy in supermarket. Pre lockdown we always ate out once a week.

That's it. Kids have hobbies and lots of toys and books.

I'd like to do exercise classes, but DH works long hours and I never have the childcare. Maybe when youngest is school age, I could do a class in the daytime.

HairyToity · 16/03/2021 10:38

I missed one. My car. It's not on HP or anything, but by far and away the poshest car we've ever had. We got carried away. For our income it's not excessive, but previously always stuck to a smaller budget when car shopping.

MrsExpo · 16/03/2021 10:41

Another horse owner here, but going to go further and say ..keeping said beastie on full livery and paying someone else to to the hard work!!

(To all those pp who said beauty treatments, fitness classes, nice clothes and eating out ... what are these things of which you speak? ... Grin ...)

FinallyHere · 16/03/2021 10:42

Cleaner and shirt/sheet ironing service

Weekly 121 yoga class

Knowing I have 'enough' money.

Knowing how lucky I am that these are the benefits of my older age.

MrsFeatherDuster · 16/03/2021 10:44

Pretty undies.

LilMidge01 · 16/03/2021 10:44

Flowers for the house

Buying cute things and treats for my hamster (cant have a bigger pet currently but if I could I would have a whole menagerie and spend my money on looking after them- pets bring me so much joy!)

Sports bras- can't look after your girls enough when running in my opinion. they need good quality support :)

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 16/03/2021 10:53

Pets, mostly buying nice food, usually quite a bit of travelling (not luxurious but it adds up over the year) and lots of books for my bookworm of a child :)

Wagsandclaws · 16/03/2021 10:55

Was never in this position until about 3 years ago. Now we are bloody lucky and know it.

We keep 3 horses at home and they are just ploddy girls for me my daughter 28 and DS's 12 & 8 ( when they can be bothered ) so they are pretty cheap to keep as live outdoors all year round and just hack here and there.

3 dogs and 4 cats. Not cheap as have fine tastes with regards to their food.

I've developed a handbag habit in the last couple of years and id say my cleaner who comes in for 3 hrs each weekday.

I have been really broke and struggled as a single Mum 15 or so years ago and before that so all of these 'luxuries' are truly appreciated every single day.

SpeckledyHen · 16/03/2021 10:57

Eating out before Covid and now Waitrose food.

Wagsandclaws · 16/03/2021 10:57

Op meant to add sorry about your horse. I lost my first girl 2 years ago and miss her still.

peaceanddove · 16/03/2021 10:58

Probably too much.

REN skincare
Shellac nails twice a month
Goose down quilts and Frette bedding.
Endless hardback books and special editions.
Shoe. Shoes. Shoes. Shoes.
Chanel foundation.
5* hotel accommodation.
M&S/Waitrose grocery shopping.
Cleaner.

CuriousSeal · 16/03/2021 11:00

Various sport memberships and sport event fees (half marathons and regattas mainly) pre lockdown/baby.

I go through periods where I treat myself to clothes and books. I just spent over £200 at Black Milk 😂. I have a particular weakness for dresses and workout clothes...

MaryIsA · 16/03/2021 11:00

Cleaner

Lots of holidays - not flash holidays - but lots of them.

My garden - I've got a real plant problem...what that old tree? had it years. I hide plant deliveries as they come in.

MaryIsA · 16/03/2021 11:00

And shopping in M&S for the weekly shop.

MrsWP · 16/03/2021 11:01

It was holidays.

The luxury in which we vacation does not match our lifestyle the rest of the year.

But that's how I like to spend my money. A few luxury trips a year to me is worth more than a flash car (we have nice cars but they're Kias) or expensive clothes or a perfectly landscaped garden. Or a bigger home etc.

I earn to cover the bills, get the basics and have REALLY nice holidays.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 16/03/2021 11:02

Eating out at different nice restaurants every week. Cannot wait to get back into a restaurant again!

LindaEllen · 16/03/2021 11:02

Mine is nice snacks.
I lost a lot of weight a decade ago, but was always adamant I wasn't going to be the kind of person who refused to look at biscuits or crisps just to stay thin.
So, when I have snacks, I really treat myself, with luxury biscuits/crisps/dips/whatever.
It makes me enjoy them and savour them more, and I don't have them every night like I used to if I just bought cheap crisps and biscuits.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 16/03/2021 11:04

@peaceanddove really sad to hear you think goose feather quilts are a luxury. They're horribly cruel.

EstuaryBird · 16/03/2021 11:04

Car mainly. I really don’t need a powerful car but I love driving it.

Spend way too much on gigs and festivals (normally) and travelling abroad to see bands.

Onedropbeat · 16/03/2021 11:05

It was childfree city breaks and dinners out

Now it’s splashing out on quality food for home and having a fully stocked wine fridge

We’ve spent a lot more on our house in the last year. Plants, log cabin, new blinds etc

StellaDendrite · 16/03/2021 11:08

Car and cleaner.

OnceUponAThread · 16/03/2021 11:09

For me it's probably hardback books. It's not necessarily my biggest spend, but as the words are identical to paperback it is completely unnecessary and therefore 100% indulgence. I love them though.

peaceanddove · 16/03/2021 11:09

Certainly don't have goose feather. We have goose down Wink

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/03/2021 11:09

Shoes, clothes, beauty treatments. When lockdowns over I am getting myself another cleaner too - can’t come soon enough!

orchidsun · 16/03/2021 11:12

I think my indulgences are relatively small compared to others! However when I see something I really want I have no hesitation in buying it. For example, books around my special interest, or a new piece of furniture or something. However I am very careful with money - clothes are second hand and I shop in Lidl, I don't have a TV license (don't watch BBC or live TV) and have the cheapest phone. This gives me as a single parent the extra cash I need when I do need a new washing machine or a day out or whatever.
