I’d change the kitchen cupboards and potentially install different doors out to garden... I really like it, DH thinks garden too small (family of 4).

But having lived in town and moved further out, I wouldn’t go quite so far personally.

Or if a long commute into town isn’t a problem I’d go the other way and head for Bedford.

I think it looks big enough. Yes the kitchen is awful, what were they thinking?

scheffsm · 06/06/2020 18:38

I don't like the kitchen at all but it could be sorted by having the doors replaced.
I don't like the layout at all - it's like an IKEA show room except without the "Scandi Chic". Open plan can work but this one is just weird. Maybe if I had a look at it in the flesh I might be able to see a way to make it work. If you decorated it differently and chose furniture which blended better with the kitchen, it might be ok.
But I think the downstairs layout isn't that great in general. Why is the study through the utility room for example?
The upstairs looks ok on the floor plan but there's only one bathroom and there's a shower stuck in the bedroom by the looks of it. I'd be wanting to convert that into an ensuite.

The garden is big enough for 2 adults and 2 children but you'd need to do a lot of work on it and spend quite a lot of money on it to make it look nice and to be usable for the children playing.

All in all, if it was me I'd not be interested in paying that amount of money bearing in mind I'd need to spend a whole lot more to make it work for me.

Love MN craziness over houses, that garden is in no way small, it's just concrete so doesn't look like much. Our garden was all gravel when we moved in last year. We've put in fake grass and a nice patio and it's made a huge difference. My husband did it all after watching some videos online so only cost about £2k as well. I'd change out the kitchen fronts too as the red is a bit much, but otherwise it's a lovely house.

Similar to PP I'm from South Wales though, and that price round here would get you a 5 bed house with a few acres Grin

CountFosco · 06/06/2020 18:41

I live up north and that may colour my view but I think with a family of four the downstairs would be a nightmare. That big kitchen/dining/living space will constantly be messy, I'd split it into two spaces and have a kitchen diner and a playroom/second sitting room. The garden just needs someone to come in and remove all the gravel and some of the paving. Offer low but the garden is not the biggest issue.

notangelinajolie · 06/06/2020 18:41

It's a seems a very masculine and cold house, which you could change. I agree that the cupboard doors need changing - but only if it's a new kitchen and has been fitted well. If the kitchen has been there are few years I'd be reluctant to go to the expense of new cupboard doors if the actual cupboards themselves are a bit tatty.
Is the back garden north facing? I only ask this because a tiny garden in itself wouldn't put me off but the double whammy of tiny and north facing would be a deal breaker. You be destined to dark doomy winters and lots of slippy green moss if you keep the patio as it is.

It also looks over overlooked.

WanderingMilly · 06/06/2020 18:44

To my eyes, the outside of the house isn't so inviting but inside, there's loads of space, I love the openness of the downstairs and the kitchen area. Not keen on all the red cupboards but that can be changed.
Doors to the outside are lovely too, but strange to have such a grand opening onto such a small space outside. The lack of garden wouldn't be for me, but if you're not a "gardening" person, it wouldn't matter. I can see from the map there's a park nearby.

However, my biggest worry with it is Gatwick airport. It says in the details 2.1 miles away. It would be a huge no, no for me. I spent years living underneath Heathrow airport and I'd certainly not recommend it for family life. My idea of hell. Every 90 seconds and the planes fly from 4am until midnight (legal hours)… when not in lockdown, of course. It nearly sent me crazy, I never got used it even after several years.

CountFosco · 06/06/2020 18:44

Also the tellys are too high on the walls, that'll give you eye and neck strain!

I very much doubt the current owners will leave their TVs.

MMN123 · 06/06/2020 18:46

@notangelinajolie
Quite right - north facing gardens are a pain!
I’d lose a bit of space any day for a south facing garden!!!

sminkipinki · 06/06/2020 18:47

I think it's ok actually. We are looking in the same sort of area and I would consider it. But there are only 3 of us, no young kids, and we want a very low-maintenance garden so our needs are slightly different to yours.

I'd fill that garden with tons of planters and pots, with a lovely big table and chairs, it would work beautifully for us but maybe not so great for young kids.

I would need to do something about those kitchen cupboards though. I can't stand shiny kitchens. The whole place is a bit overworked for my taste, but I think it could be fixed pretty easily.

Crawley is likely to see a significant drop in house prices though, for the reasons already stated. So I'd hang on if you can.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 06/06/2020 18:47

I like the house - really nice, garden is easily turfed if you like.
But it's in Crawley.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 06/06/2020 18:49

I think it's nice - you could make the garden lovely, I think the patio is far too big. Kitchen is a bit OTT but some nice oak wooden flooring and it could look lovely. Not keen on the massive mirror.
As for the garage converted into a utility/office, I don't think they ever really work, but you could add a door from the utility to side path and turn it into a boot room/bike store?

tattychicken · 06/06/2020 18:50

You wouldn't get a house that size in Horsham. Crawley often gets negative comments but there are loads of positives- lovely parks (check out Tilgate and Worth Park which is v near this house), great leisure centre and theatre, really positive community development. It's a town that it is quite open about the issues it faces and works hard to address them.
That said, it has been and will continue to be massively impacted by the near closure of Gatwick. It's been likened to a mining town when the pit closes, which is prob not far off.

speakout · 06/06/2020 18:50

I hate the kitchen can't stand the red., and the huge number of downlighter fittings.
The TV above the fire is hideous.

Redtartanshoes · 06/06/2020 18:54

I still marvel at the prices down south compared to Scotland. Kitchen is horrific. Garden can be fixed. It’s fine

rescuecat · 06/06/2020 18:54

Those saying it's too small for 2 adults and 2 children are being ridiculous imo.
Garden needs turfing, figure out which direction it faces (north facing would be a deal breaker for me unless the house was amazing - not happened yet).
I actually don't find the internal decor too bad but what they've done is extended it on the cheap. Install an rsj to have the back of the house as a proper open plan kitchen/dinner/chill out.
Upstairs looks room to fit a neat ensuite.
Have you been and had a look around the area to see what you think in person? Looks to be close to a park which is a positive and I assume you've checked the rating of the schools, most are good or outstanding which helps the house even if you don't plan on using them.

Badmemorieshouse · 06/06/2020 18:54

I think it’s gorgeous! I love the kitchen and garden!

oohnicevase · 06/06/2020 18:54

Horsham is more expensive, Southwater less so but it's not 40 mins on the train as you need to get to Horsham

Nonnymum · 06/06/2020 18:55

The house is lovely but I wouldn't move to Crawley from London. Unless you have to. It has all the disadvantages of small town mentality with none of the charm

Bluntness100 · 06/06/2020 18:56

The TV above the fire is hideous

You do know people tend to take their furniture inc their tv when they sell right?

oohnicevase · 06/06/2020 18:57

Needs work but look at Billingshurst, it has a mainline station .

Alsohuman · 06/06/2020 18:57

It would be very easy to turf the garden and replace the kitchen and wardrobe doors which, unless the bathroom is hideous, are the only things that need to be done. There’s nothing that would cost a fortune.

sminkipinki · 06/06/2020 18:58

Tbf redtartan I'm not sure I'd want to live in Uddingston either Grin

You could get a lovely big flat in the West End for that price though... Wink

Broadbridge Heath is a village outside of Horsham . Mainline stations nearby . Horsham , and CHrists hospital .

Bluntness100 · 06/06/2020 19:00

Actually uddingston /both well is fine, but that house on the glasgow rd is in a bad location.
